Review Al Capone / 20th Century Fox:Rod Steiger. That's why you need to see this well-crafted but otherwise undistinguished biopic of America's most iconic gangster. Produced for Allied Artists (the upscale version of Monogram, the studio that made Dillinger in the mid-'40s), the film gets underway with the Brooklyn hoodlum's arrival in Chicago on the eve of Prohibition. His old pal Johnny Torrio (Nehemiah Persoff) takes him on as right-hand man, and before you can say "spaghetti alla marinara," the ambitious Alphonse has persuaded "Johnny Papa" that they should eliminate their opera-loving boss, Big Jim Colosimo (Joe De Santis), and divide up the Chicago territory with "Bugs" Moran (Murvyn Vye), Dion O'Banion (Robert Gist), and "Hymie" Weiss (Lewis Charles). As scripted by Malvin Wald (The Naked City) and Henry F. Greenberg, and directed by Orson Welles protégé Richard Wilson, the film dutifully hits the high points of "Scarface Al"'s career. Stylistically, though, and despite the presence of cinematographer Lucien Ballard (who would also shoot Budd Boetticher's The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond), it's outclassed by any episode of the TV series The Untouchables, destined to make pop-cultural history three years later. But Steiger, in an early starring role, is aces. He gets all the shadings: the courtier's faux-humility as he ingratiates himself with the bosses, the shrewd sizing-up of each rival's strengths and vulnerability, the need to have his way through charm or brute force-two valences of the same charisma. There are even uncanny moments (and this, of course, is pure accident-or mythic rightness) when you'd swear you could glimpse the once and future Tony Soprano. [+]-Richard T. Jameson.

Review Jaws:In the vastly overrated 1998 book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, author Peter Biskind puts the blame for Hollywood's blockbuster mentality at least partially on Steven Spielberg's box-office success with this adaptation of Peter Benchley's bestselling novel. But you can't blame Spielberg for making a terrific movie, which Jaws definitely is. The story of a Long Island town whose summer tourist business is suddenly threatened by great-white-shark attacks on humans bypasses the potboiler trappings of Benchley's book and goes straight for the jugular with beautifully crafted, crowd-pleasing sequences of action and suspense supported by a trio of terrific performances by Roy Scheider (as the local sheriff), Richard Dreyfuss (as a shark specialist), and particularly Robert Shaw (as the old fisherman who offers to hunt the shark down). The sequences on Shaw's boat-as the three of them realize that in fact the shark is hunting them-are what entertaining moviemaking is all about. -Marshall Fine.

Review The Desert Fox / 20th Century Fox:James Mason delivers a strong performance in this fascinating portrait of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. In the early 1940's, Rommel's juggernaut Afrika Korps dominated North Africa. But as the tide turned and he came to the painful realization that his Fuhrer, to whom he hd sworn allegiance, was destroying Germany, his ingrained sense of duty pushed him into a conspiracy against Hitler. Co-starring Jessica Tandy as Rommel's wife and Cedric Hardwicke as another anti-Hitler conspirator, The Desert Fox is an intimate look at one of the most respected military tacticians of modern times. What a difference a few years can make. The Desert Fox, released six years after the end of World War II, is a solemnly respectful tribute to Erwin Rommel, Germany's most celebrated military genius. James Mason's portrayal of this gallant warrior became a highlight of his career iconography. The film itself is oddly disjointed: a precredit commando raid to liquidate Rommel is followed by a flashback to the field-marshal's lightning successes commanding the Afrika Korps—-a compressed account via documentary footage and copious narration (spoken by Michael Rennie, who also dubs Desmond Young, the Rommel biographer and onetime British POW appearing briefly as himself). The dramatic core is Rommel's growing disenchantment with Hitler (Luther Adler), his involvement in the plot to assassinate der Führer, and his subsequent martyrdom. Mason's Rommel returned two years later for a flamboyant, mostly German-speaking cameo in The Desert Rats, a prequel focusing on the battle for Tobruk. [+]-Richard T. Jameson.

Review Plymouth Adventure (1952) / MGM (Warner):Spencer Tracy and Gene Tierney star in this Hollywood realization of life aboard the Mayflower on her most historic journey. In one of his meanest roles since Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Tracy is at his gruffest and bitterest as the disagreeable, tempestuous Captain Jones, master of the famous vessel that carried the Pilgrims to the New World. Tierney in Technicolor is as beautiful as ever, despite being cast as a somber Pilgrim. Leo Genn's portrayal of Pilgrim leader William Bradford is memorable, while Lloyd Bridges, Van Johnson, and John Dehner round out the excellent cast. The depiction of the hardships faced by the passengers and crew on the voyage are fairly accurate, despite any minor liberties taken with historical facts. The film won a 1953 Oscar for special effects, and the storm sequence alone is still worth the price of admission today. -Mark Savary.
