Review 99 and 44/100% Dead / Fox Video:

Undoubtedly one of the director's strangest projects, this film has garnered something of a cult following over the years. In a dystopian future where the laws of reality have been suspended, Harry Crown (Richard Harris) is a hit man who's been hired by aged Mafia don Uncle Frank (Edmond O'Brien) to eliminate Big Eddie (Bradford Dillman), a rival gangster who has been moving in on his turf. Big Eddie counters with his own enforcer, Marvin "Claw" Zuckerman (Chuck Connors). Perhaps an inspiration for INSPECTOR GADGET, the Claw bears a metal stump in place of one of his arms that can be fitted with a wide variety of weapons such as knives and whips as well as handy kitchen appliances. As the rival killers attempt to destroy each other, they engage in high-speed chases throughout an unnamed city of which they seem to be the only inhabitants. Often hilarious, this wild gangster parody veers from comedy to graphic violence, a combination that Quentin Tarantino and his progeny would harness with even greater effect two decades later.

Review Lord Jim:

Three years after Lawrence of Arabia, the largely impressive Lord Jim (1965) finds Peter O'Toole again essaying a self-doubting but remarkable, white Englishman who leads a foreign people against their oppressor. Based on the Joseph Conrad novel, Lord Jim is the story of a British maritime officer, Jim (O'Toole), who takes a brief post on a tramp steamer and flees in terror during a storm at sea. Dogged by a reputation for cowardice, Jim attempts to reinvent himself in his own eyes, commanding an attack against a feudal warlord (Eli Wallach) in a distant, Southeast Asian village and basking in god-like glory afterward. A sinister plot by a gentleman pirate (James Mason) sets the stage for Jim's confrontation with his true destiny. Simplified and adapted by writer-director Richard Brooks (In Cold Blood), Lord Jim sometimes feels rushed and obvious, but O'Toole's golden performance and legendary cinematographer Freddie Young's 70mm footage are outstanding. -Tom Keogh.

Review / Wo shi shei

Review Wo shi shei:

Shot in English and budgeted higher than any of his previous Asian features, Jackie Chan's last film under his Hong Kong contract is an action-packed globe-trotting adventure shot with the American audience in mind. The spies and secret agent-laden plot is packed with car chases, explosions, gunfire aplenty, and of course Jackie's own brand of gymnastic martial arts. But the flood of his older films between his hits Rumble in the Bronx and Rush Hour had sated American viewers and Who Am I? wound up being sold directly to cable. It's our loss, for this mix of goofy slapstick and jaw-dropping action is his most impressive film since Drunken Master II. Playing a special forces agent (named, naturally, Jackie) struck with amnesia and adopted by an African bush tribe following a failed assassination attempt, he embarks on a quest to discover his true identity while armies of killers pour after him. After an explosive opening, the story gets momentarily bogged down in the kind of mugging humor that leaves most American audiences scratching their heads, but once Jackie kicks into gear the film is a high-speed action flurry that culminates in a furious battle atop a Rotterdam skyscraper. Jackie is at his most charmingly naive (he berates the villains, pleading "Why do you want to destroy when you can make things better?") and athletically impressive: the marvelous stunts-including a flight down the side of the skyscraper-and fight choreography make Rush Hour look like a Sunday drive. -Sean Axmaker.
