Review Tuskegee:Living Black and White:

How did the Civil Rights era affect Tuskegee, Ala. , where Tuskegee Institute had given black citizens more prominence than they had in other Alabama towns? People who grew up in Macon County, including producer Michael Letcher, remember the turbulent times that divided the community.

Review Intimate Portrait: Maya Angelou / Unapix / a-Pix Ent.:

Maya Angelou, one of the most prominent literary figures of the 20th century, grew up during-and became a vital part of-one of the most volatile periods of American history. The inspiring, tragic, outrageous life of Maya Angelou could be the subject of an entire college course, but this video serves as a terrific first primer. This Intimate Portrait provides an overview of her life and accomplishments; interviews and video clips show Anglou's rise from a difficult childhood to her development into a world-renowned poet, author, and teacher. The paramount value of this production lies in the interviews with her brother and son, and, of course, with Angelou herself. Actress and talk-show host Oprah Winfrey provides reverent narration. -Brendan J. LaSalle.

Review Viva Mandela:

1990. 120 minutes stereo. Canon Collins Educational Trust for South Africa. Produced by Robert Lemkin, Paul Snell, Shaun Fenton and Jane Stylianou SYNOPSIS The history of apartheid from 1918 to February 11, 1990, when Mandela was released. Narration is by President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia. The video uses documentary footage backgrounded by music and appearances by over thirty musical artists. In contrast to other films/videos featuring mostly international musicians, this one features the following South African groups: Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Hugh Masekela, Johnny Clegg and Savuka, Malapoets, the SWAPO Cultural group, amongst others. Bob Marley, Latin Quarter and Black Uhuru are some of the non-South African groups featured. The video contains scenes of important events: volunteers during the Defiance Campaign of 1952, and the indelible image of a youth and a girl running with the lifeless body of a young child shot by police bullets. This image recurs with the equally tragic news photograph of Hector Peterson on June 16, 1976.

Review Intimate Portrait: Queen Latifah / Unapix / a-Pix Ent.:

All hail the queen! Not long after graduating from high school, Queen Latifah shot to stardom with a new attitude toward rap and the strength, presence, and charisma to assure her starring roles in film and on TV. How did she make it? This Intimate Portrait chronicles the young Dana Owens (the name on her birth certificate) growing up in New Jersey in an incredibly loving and supportive family, rapping in a friend's basement, and her meteoric rise to success after Tommy Boy's discovery of her. Interviews with family and friends, old photos, and concert footage give the viewer a royal picture of this beacon of positivity. Whether you're a fan or not, Queen Latifah is a symbol of hope, fortitude, and courage, and her Intimate Portrait gives insight into a remarkable woman. -Rob Lightner.

Review Roots 6 Video Box Set / Warner Home Video:

From the moment the young Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton) is stolen from his life and ancestral home in 18th-century Africa and brought under inhumane conditions to be auctioned as a slave in America, a line is begun that leads from this most shameful chapter in U. S. history to the 20th-century author Alex Haley, a Kinte descendant. The late Haley's acclaimed book Roots was adapted into this six-volume television miniseries, which was a widely watched phenomenon in 1977. The programs cover several generations in the antebellum South and end with the story of "Chicken" George, a freed slave played by Ben Vereen whose family feels the agony of entrenched racism and learns to fight it. Between the lives of Kunta and George, we meet a number of memorable characters, black and white, and learn much about the emotional and physical torments of slavery, from beatings and rapes to the forced separation of spouses and families. Nothing like this had ever confronted so many mainstream Americans when the series was originally broadcast, and the extent to which the country was nudged a degree or two toward enlightenment was instantly obvious. Roots still has that ability to open one's eyes, and engage an audience in a sweeping, memorable drama at the same time. -Tom Keogh.

Review The Jackie Robinson Story / Alpha Video Distributors, Inc:

This is a chronological history of Jackie Robinson, "The Pride of Brooklyn". From his boyhood love of baseball to his distinguished career as a college track and football star to his time in the Negro Leagues and on to his signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first black man to break baseball's "color bar" in his first major league baseball season. Robinson hit a solid 297 and led the league with 29 stolen bases. This is a fascinating forthright look at all the obstacles facing black Americans during the pre-civil rights era.

Review Dolemite Collection / Xenon/Umvd Visual Entertainmen:

Who's the baddest motherf****r to blow onto blaxploitation screens? Forget Shaft and just ask X-rated comic and "godfather of rap" Rudy Ray Moore. He'll give you the gospel of Dolemite. Street hustler, pimp, and all-around ghetto superhero Dolemite began life as a character in Moore's nightclub act and was a natural character for his self-financed film debut, a revenge tale set on the corrupt streets of L. A. Dolemite is sprung from prison by an impossibly understanding warden so he can find the drug-dealing, gun-smuggling crooks who framed him. With the help of his all-girl army of kung fu killers and the most flamboyant wardrobe this side of Cher, he lays waste to dozens of bad guys while spouting his funky raps. Thick, slow and sleepy, Moore is neither a natural actor not a convincing martial arts action hero, but his lazy line deliveries are great, lyrical cascades of four-letter words and "ghetto expressions," and he performs two of his most famous stand-up raps, "Shine and the Great Titanic" and "The Signifying Monkey. "Dolemite is not a particularly competent movie-the direction (by costar D'Urville Martin) is clumsy, the performances flat, and microphones peek in from time to time (get that video letterboxed, Xenon!)-but the outrageous mix of nightclub rap, kung-fu action, and Moore's four-letter dialogue turned it into an instant urban hit and has kept it alive as a cult classic. Dolemite returns in The Human Tornado. The DVD also features clips from the documentary The Legend of Dolemite and the complete lyrics to his raps. [+]
