Review Vol. 1-6 Box Set / Pioneer Video:

More spirits live in Saito High School than in Harry Potter's Hogwarts, including the Giant Who Dances in the Gym, anatomical model Haruo and his skeleton Bones, the dashing Scarlet Mantle, sexy Miss Hanako, the Girl in the Mirror, an animated statue-and the head of the school. The members of the "Holy Student Council" are charged with keeping them in line and fending off hostile entities. Council President Haruto Hokujo says he wants to lead a normal life but finds himself in the thick of every crisis. When he's not being possessed by some wandering spirit, Kazumi Ryudo lusts after Miss Hanako. Asahina Mutsumi handles exorcisms while suffering from "Shouta Complex"-the female equivalent of the "Lolita Complex" that afflicts so many males in anime and manga: she lusts after pubescent boys. This running gag doesn't play well in America, where suggestions of child molestation aren't considered funny. The situations in this 12-part, no-holds-barred comedy invariably degenerate into slapstick disasters. When the ghost of a lovely girl tries to take possession of Kazumi so she can spend the night with her musician-lover, he imagines a homosexual encounter; she wants to hear the song he wrote for her. A disgruntled former student steals 1,000 statues, hoping to absorb their mental powers-but is sidetracked by Kazumi's girlie magazine. Although Haruto ends each episode sighing, "Oh my God!" the characters actually enjoy their unconventional lives. [+]
Rated 13 and up for profanity, nudity, sexual humor, toilet humor, and violence. Only available in original Japanese language with English subtitles. -Charles Solomon This school has spirit! Three students of Saito High, the members of the "Holy Student Council," must use their special abilities to take control of the spirits that inhabit the school grounds. Then, they must work with their newfound otherworldly allies to put a stop to local supernatural disturbances - often with disastrously funny results. Featuring character designs by Ranma 1/2's Atsuko Nakajima. All twelve episodes available in a subtitled Collector's Box Set.

Review Everybody Rides the Carousel / Pyramid Home Video:

The third volume of "The Hubley Collection" contains three of the innovative studio's most unusual and interesting works. Based on the writings of psychoanalyst Erik Erikson, "Everybody Rides the Carousel" (1976) examines the stages of human personality development. "A Doonesbury Special" (1977) was the last film on which John and Faith Hubley collaborated, and it was their last Oscar nominee. Created with Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Garry Trudeau, this neglected television special brings to life the situations that appeared in the strip during the '70s: the football huddle, dinner at Walden Commune, the day-care center, etc. The familiar characters-Mike, Mark, Joannie, and Zonker-examine their present lives and how the legacy of the political activism of the '60s has affected each of them. In "My Universe Inside Out" (1996) Faith Hubley reflects on her own life and work, including her distinctly odd childhood, her life with John, their children, and the personal films she's made since his death. The Hubleys use the medium of animation to explore often challenging ideas and find humor in quirky, personal ways. Their films are completely unlike the slapstick cartoons of the Hollywood studios but remain extremely satisfying in their own way. -Charles Solomon.

Review The Lord of the Rings:

Although it was ultimately overshadowed by Peter Jackson's live-action Lord of the Rings trilogy, Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy classic is not without charms of its own. A target of derision from intolerant fans, this ambitious production is nevertheless a respectably loyal attempt to animate the first half of Tolkien's trilogy, beginning with the hobbit Frodo's inheritance of "the One Ring" of power from Bilbo Baggins, and ending with the wizard Gandalf's triumph over the evil army of orcs. While the dialogue is literate and superbly voiced by a prestigious cast (including John Hurt as Aragorn), Leonard Rosenman's accomplished score effectively matches the ominous atmosphere that Bakshi's animation creates and sustains. Bakshi's lamentable decision to combine traditional cel animation with "rotoscoped" (i. e. , meticulously traced) live-action footage is jarringly distracting and aesthetically disastrous, but when judged by its narrative content, this Lord of the Rings deserves more credit than it typically receives. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Sigmund & The Sea Monsters Complete Episodes Gift Box / Rhino / Wea:

Sid and Marty Krofft created many wildly creative series for Saturday morning television. One of the most memorable was Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, the story of a sea creature, Sigmund, who runs away from his family's cave by the ocean and is adopted by two human children. This collection from Kid Rhino showcases all 29 episodes that originally ran from 1973 to 1975, and gave us quite interesting characters like Sigmund, Big Mama, and Sheldon the Sea Genie (played by comedian Rip Taylor). The shows are chock full of pop-culture references from the time period, and feature many familiar voices behind the monsters. Although the plot rarely changes (the kids must keep Sigmund hidden from the other humans around them, despite the trouble that he causes), they are all enjoyable to watch. Each episode concludes with a song written by the team of Boyce and Hart (responsible for many of the Monkees' early hits) and sung by star Johnnie Whitaker (Jody on Family Affair). Of course, the theme song, "Friends," is widely remembered and as hummable as it ever was. The foam rubber and goggle-eyed monsters are far from scary, but do provide a glimpse into the past, when high-tech special effects weren't necessary to create fantasy worlds. The show revels in its simplicity, and it appears as if the actors had as much fun making the series as we do watching it. -Zachary Lively Episode Guide Volume 1 The Monster Who Came to Dinner - (Episode 1, original air date September 8, 1973) - Sigmund's family throws him aout because he doesn't want to scare people. Is There a Doctor in the Cave? - (Episode 4, original air date September 29, 1973) - Sigmund gets sick and needs Big Mama's special food to cure him, so Johnny and Scott sneak into the sea monster cave and raid the Oozes' refrigerator. Happy Birthdaze - (Episode 5, original air date December 1, 1973) - Across town in her sea-view cave, Mama's trying to get Blurp and Slurp to clean up for Big Daddy's birthday celebration. Being lazy sea monsters, they decide to get Sigmund to do the dirty work. Volume 2 The Nasty Nephew - (Episode 6, original air date November 3, 1973) - Aunt Zelda's annoying nephew, Leroy, follows Johnny and Scott to Big Daddy's cave and gets more than he bargained for. Monster Rock Festival - (Episode 7, original air date September 22, 1973) - Sigmund talks Johnny into entering a radio-station music contest. When they win, it's all the boys can do to keep their lead singer's identity a secret. Ghoul School Days - (Episode 8, original air date October 6, 1973) /i> - After getting Johnny and Scott in trouble with Zelda, Sigmund runs away. When the boys discover his note they rush out after him. The Curfew Shall Ring Tonight - (Episode 9, original air date November 17, 1973) - After breaking Aunt Zelda's favorite salad bowl, Sigmund defies curfew and heads home to pick up 50 clams he's got hidden to buy her a new one. Sweet Mama Redecorates - (Episode 10, original air date October 13, 1973) - Big Daddy's strapped for cash, but that doesn't stop Sweet Mama from wanting to redecorate their cave. Luckily, Blurp and Slurp come up with a brilliant idea: trade their furniture with that from Johnny and Scott's house. Volume 3 Make Room for Daddy - (Episode 11, original air date December 29, 1973) - When Sweet Mama kicks Big Daddy out of the cave, he moves into the club house with Sigmund. It's Your Move - (Episode 12, original air date November 24, 1973) - Sigmund's family evacuates the cave during a storm, while Sigmund moves home to avoid Johnny and Scott's parents. Trick or Treat - (Episode 13, original air date October 27, 1973) - When Blurp and Slurp find out Sigmund is the grand-prize winner of a contest worth a lot of "clams," they kidnap him while he's out trick-or-treating. Uncle Siggy Swings - (Episode 14, original air date December 22, 1973) - When Uncle Swiggy visits his favorite nephew at Johnny and Scott's clubhouse, he sees Aunt Zelda and falls head-over-tentacles in love with her.
