Review Masters of Russian Animation: The Complete Works of Yuri Norstein:YURI NORSTEIN is universally considered the most remarkable director to emerge from the current generation of Russian animators. Although his body of completed work is less than 80 minutes in length, its impact has been so profound that he is regularly ranked one of the world's greatest contemporary directors. Most of his films were made by the same small team, his wife the artist Francesca Yarbusova, his cameraman the late Alexander Zhukovsky, and the late composer M. Meyerovich. All of the films included in this edition of the Norstein Collection were digitally re-mastered from new 35mm prints under the supervision of Zhukovsky, to whom it is dedicated. Films included in the video: TALE OF TALES, HEDGEHOG IN THE FOG, HERON AND CRANE, FOX AND RABBIT, BATTLE OF KERJENETS (co-directed with I. Ivanov-Vano) and 25th-First Day.

Review Vol. 1-6 Box Set / Pioneer Video:More spirits live in Saito High School than in Harry Potter's Hogwarts, including the Giant Who Dances in the Gym, anatomical model Haruo and his skeleton Bones, the dashing Scarlet Mantle, sexy Miss Hanako, the Girl in the Mirror, an animated statue-and the head of the school. The members of the "Holy Student Council" are charged with keeping them in line and fending off hostile entities. Council President Haruto Hokujo says he wants to lead a normal life but finds himself in the thick of every crisis. When he's not being possessed by some wandering spirit, Kazumi Ryudo lusts after Miss Hanako. Asahina Mutsumi handles exorcisms while suffering from "Shouta Complex"-the female equivalent of the "Lolita Complex" that afflicts so many males in anime and manga: she lusts after pubescent boys. This running gag doesn't play well in America, where suggestions of child molestation aren't considered funny. The situations in this 12-part, no-holds-barred comedy invariably degenerate into slapstick disasters. When the ghost of a lovely girl tries to take possession of Kazumi so she can spend the night with her musician-lover, he imagines a homosexual encounter; she wants to hear the song he wrote for her. A disgruntled former student steals 1,000 statues, hoping to absorb their mental powers-but is sidetracked by Kazumi's girlie magazine. Although Haruto ends each episode sighing, "Oh my God!" the characters actually enjoy their unconventional lives. [+]

Review The Little Mermaid:From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. -Keith Simanton.

Review Wallace and Gromit in A Close Shave:Hot from the international triumph of The Wrong Trousers, clay animator Nick Park knew that his third Wallace & Gromit film was going to have to be the biggest and best adventure yet for the mild-mannered inventor Wallace and his perceptive pooch Gromit. With the ambitiously zany plot of A Close Shave, Park and his fellow animators rose to the occasion and their film won the 1995 Academy Award (Park's second Oscar) for Best Animated Short. This time out, Wallace & Gromit have teamed up to provide a window-washing service, and that's how Wallace meets the lovely Wendolene Ramsbottom, a wool-shop owner whose malevolent dog Preston turns out to be the mastermind of a sheep-napping scheme! Of course, no Wallace & Gromit adventure can be without a grandiose gadget, so Wallace's latest invention is the Knit-O-Matic, a yarn-making machine capable of shearing a whole flock of sheep just a bit too efficiently! When the villainous Preston gains control of the mechanical knitting marvel, Gromit must race to the rescue, and A Close Shave reaches new heights of clay-animation mastery. Every shot is a testament to Nick Park's patience, his clever ingenuity, and his filmmaking flair. The movie's so technically impressive, in fact, that the whole world wondered where Park could go next. It was clear that Wallace & Gromit would eventually star in an animated feature-length movie, since this marvelous 30-minute film represents its own kind of short-form perfection. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Lady and the Tramp:Disney's first animated feature in CinemaScope is now available in widescreen presentations on video, and it is definitely good to get the whole picture. One of the studio's most original and charming movies, the 1955 film tells the story of a rakish, street-smart dog named Tramp, who helps an aristocratic pooch named Lady out of some trouble and then commences a romance with her. Sweet, funny scenes abound, and the combination of innocence and sophistication would have done well in a live-action picture. Peggy Lee cowrote the songs and provides the voice of the Siamese cats in one of the film's best-known musical sequences. This newly restored version spruces up both sonics and visuals, and a letterbox version is available. -Tom Keogh.

Review Santa vs. the Snowman 3D / Universal Studios:The kid-friendly Santa vs. the Snowman began as a 1997 animated television special, then made a leap to the biggest movie screens-IMAX-in the world (in 3-D, no less), and now has come full circle to DVD with its extra, simulated perspective and deep focus intact. (3-D glasses, which come with the disc, are required. ) An animator's lark, Santa concerns a battle between Mr. Claus and a scheming snowman who tries to overtake Santa's toy-making and Christmas Eve delivery operation. A full-scale war erupts (there are some scary images here, particularly of a snowman writhing to his fiery death), though the violence is mitigated by clever quotes from movie and animation classics, including Toy Story and the stop-motion television perennial Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town. The original 2-D geometric planes are artfully reinvented to achieve an exciting depth. -Tom Keogh.

Review Waking Life / Fox Home Entertainment:Waking Life is a film that never settles down. Or maybe it never wakes up. Regardless, Richard Linklater's animated meditation seems to strike a perfect balance between the plotless meanderings of Slacker and the unquenchable knowledge-seeking of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha. Any way you look at it, this is a weird, original movie. As he attempts to figure out what separates dreams from reality, the protagonist (Dazed and Confused's Wiley Wiggins) hears an earful from everyone he stumbles upon. Ramblings range from the scholarly (Linklater's former college professor Robert C. Solomon gives a monologue) to the banal (of which there are plenty). Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, Steven Soderbergh, and Adam Goldberg all get animated cameos, basically playing themselves. The dream-centered dialogues eventually grow mind-numbing, but that's OK; the animation steals the show. Each frame of the movie, which was first shot with live actors, was painted over, and the process renders a distorted and trippy collage of sights and sounds. [+]
Linklater's film is ultimately quite poignant, but, as with any good journey, you'll need to sit through some fairly tedious moments before reaching the destination. -Jason Verlinde.
