Review Reboot 3 (Dub) / Adv Films:Enzo Matrix, who has grown up to be a sullen, muscular hero, continues to search for Bob, his Defender friend and hero. He's accompanied by Andraia, now a curvaceous babe in a revealing costume. They take up with Capitain Capacitator, a. k. a. Crimson Binome, a pirate of the "aargh, matey" school; his motley crew; and "web surfer" Ray Tracer, whom Matrix regards as a potential rival. As they journey through cyber-dimensions, Andraia receives a life-threatening bite from a "web creature," then Capacitator's ship, the Saucy Mare, is attacked by a host of strange-looking "Web Riders," whose leader turns out to be Bob. After reviving Andraia, Bob heads the ship back to continue the war against the evil Megabyte. The animation lacks any sense of weight-a problem with motion-capture computer graphics: despite all the elaborate visual patterns, tracking shots, and reflections, the characters move like marionettes. There are also numerous story problems: e. [+]
g. when the Saucy Mare is attacked by "pixels," the Web Riders and Tracer defeat them with some sort of light beams that are never explained. The first computer-animated network series, Reboot has its fans (thanks in part to the show's exposure on the Cartoon Network), who are the obvious audience for this disc. Contains these episodes: 9. "The Return of the Crimson Binome," 10. "Edge of Beyond," 11. "Web Riders on the Storm/Interface," 12. "Mousetrap. " Rated "suitable for all ages," but violence and grotesque imagery are inappropriate for children under 8. -Charles Solomon.

Review Warriors of the Wind / New World Pictures:Hayao Miyazaki gained widespread attention in Japan for his complex ecological manga series, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1982), which he adapted for the screen two years later. One thousand years after a war devastated much of the Earth, humanity clings to existence at the fringes of a vast, polluted forest inhabited by monstrous insects. Only Nausicaä, the princess of the tiny realm of the Valley of the Wind, grasps the environmental significance of the forest. She sees beyond petty wars and national rivalries to the only viable future for the planet. In Nausicaä, Miyazaki began to explore elements he would develop more fully in his later films: daring, compassionate heroines; exciting flying sequences; colorful side characters; strong interpersonal relationships; and a call for an ecologically sustainable way of life. Nausicaä prefigures Sheeta in Castle in the Sky and Chihiro in Spirited Away, just as the rough and ready Asbel anticipates Pazu in Castle in the Sky and Ashitaka in Princess Mononoke. For years, Nausicaä was available in the United States only as the badly re-edited Warriors of the Wind. The new English dub from Disney presents the film in its entirety, with strong vocal performances by Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart, Alison Lohman, and Edward James Olmos. (Rated PG: violence, frightening imagery) -Charles Solomon.

Review Wallace and Gromit in A Close Shave:Hot from the international triumph of The Wrong Trousers, clay animator Nick Park knew that his third Wallace & Gromit film was going to have to be the biggest and best adventure yet for the mild-mannered inventor Wallace and his perceptive pooch Gromit. With the ambitiously zany plot of A Close Shave, Park and his fellow animators rose to the occasion and their film won the 1995 Academy Award (Park's second Oscar) for Best Animated Short. This time out, Wallace & Gromit have teamed up to provide a window-washing service, and that's how Wallace meets the lovely Wendolene Ramsbottom, a wool-shop owner whose malevolent dog Preston turns out to be the mastermind of a sheep-napping scheme! Of course, no Wallace & Gromit adventure can be without a grandiose gadget, so Wallace's latest invention is the Knit-O-Matic, a yarn-making machine capable of shearing a whole flock of sheep just a bit too efficiently! When the villainous Preston gains control of the mechanical knitting marvel, Gromit must race to the rescue, and A Close Shave reaches new heights of clay-animation mastery. Every shot is a testament to Nick Park's patience, his clever ingenuity, and his filmmaking flair. The movie's so technically impressive, in fact, that the whole world wondered where Park could go next. It was clear that Wallace & Gromit would eventually star in an animated feature-length movie, since this marvelous 30-minute film represents its own kind of short-form perfection. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Robin Hood / Buena Vista Distribution Company:A minor classic from Disney, this 1973 all-animal, all-animated musical version of the familiar story is more charming than one might expect. Perhaps it's the warm, chummy take on key relationships within the legend-the way Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian (Monica Evans) comes up or the way best pal Little John (Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book) admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero, "Aw, Rob, why dontcha just marry the girl?" (Then, of course, there's the canny "casting" of the romantic leads as foxes: Robin the sly one and Marian the, well, foxy one. ) The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic: Peter Ustinov, Andy Devine, Terry-Thomas, George Lindsey. Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale. The film is ably directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, whose decades of work in Disney's animation division helped create the studio's rich legacy. -Tom Keogh.

Review Fritz the Cat:Advertised as "X-rated and Animated," Fritz the Cat earned an impressive $25 million in 1972. Screenwriter-director Ralph Bakshi based the film on three of Robert Crumb's stories about a superficial college student who tried to seduce anything in a skirt. The gritty, often gross film shocked U. S. audiences accustomed to innocent flirtations and slapstick comedy in cartoons. Thirty years later, Fritz looks less shocking than puerile. The violence grafted onto Crumb's innocent stories feels gratuitous, and the racial imagery tasteless. As dated as a Nehru jacket, the film will interest students of animation history and American pop culture. Crumb detested the film: he drew Fritz as a decadent Hollywood star, who was exploited by caricatures of Bakshi and producer Steve Krantz-and murdered by a bitter ex-girlfriend. "Another casualty of the '60s. [+]
