Review Pinocchio:This Disney masterpiece from 1940 will hold up forever precisely because it doesn't restrain or temper the most elemental emotions and themes germane to its story. Based on the Collodi tale about a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy, Pinocchio is among the most magical, mythical, and frightening films to come from the studio in its long history. A number of scenes make permanent impressions on young minds (just ask Steven Spielberg, who quoted the film more than once in Close Encounters of the Third Kind), and the songs ("When You Wish upon a Star") can't be beat. -Tom Keogh.

Review Kôkaku kidôtai / Palm Pictures:The skillful blending of drawn animation and computer-generated imagery excited anime fans when this science fiction mystery was released in 1995: many enthusiasts believe Ghost suggests what the future of anime will be, at least in the short term. The film is set in the not-too-distant future, when an unnamed government uses lifelike cyborgs or "enhanced" humans for undercover work. One of the key cyborgs is The Major, Motoko Kusanagi, who resembles a cross between The Terminator and a Playboy centerfold. She finds herself caught up in a tangled web of espionage and counterespionage as she searches for the mysterious superhacker known as "The Puppet Master. " Mamoru Oshii directs with a staccato rhythm, alternating sequences of rapid-fire action (car chases, gun battles, explosions) with static dialogue scenes that allow the characters to sort out the vaguely mystical and rather convoluted plot. Kusanagi's final quote from I Corinthians suggests that electronic evolution may compliment and eventually supplant organic evolution. The minor nudity, profanity, and considerable violence would earn Ghost in the Shell at least a PG rating. -Charles Solomon.

Review Aladdin:Disney's 1992 animated feature is a triumph of wit and skill. The high-tech artwork and graphics look great, the characters are strong, the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain (Jafar, voiced by Jonathan Freeman), and there's an incredible hook atop the whole thing: Robin Williams's frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdin's genie. Even if one isn't particularly moved by the love story between the title character (Scott Weinger) and his girlfriend Jasmine (Linda Larkin), you can easily get lost in Williams's improvisational energy and the equally entertaining performances of Freeman and Gilbert Gottfried (as Jafar's parrot). -Tom Keogh.

Review Generation O! Proud To Be Loud / Sony:Molly O is both an elementary school student and the lead singer in a rock band, a juxtaposition of roles that recalls the original "Alvin Show. " Generation O is also mildly didactic, with Molly learning a lesson in each episode: in "Boys May Be Boys," she discovers the importance of honesty when her older brother gets blamed for something she did; in "Deviated Tonsils," she has to overcome her fear of having her perennially infected tonsils removed. But the tone of the program often has a nasty edge that's closer to "The Family Guy" than the innocent mischief of "Alvin. " Molly's parents are well meaning but ineffectual lumps with funny accents; her brother Buzz is a money-hungry clod. In "Boys," Molly tries to act like a boy to sneak into a father-son monster truck show: she and her best friend go through a standard set of male-bashing jokes about boys acting "like gorillas"-a dubious lesson for kids. Seeing a cartoon character confront the scary prospect of surgery could reassure children facing similar procedures, but Molly doesn't even suffer any discomfort after her tonsillectomy, which sets the audience up for a disillusioning recovery period. Not rated, suitable for ages 6 and older. -Charles Solomon.

Review Baburugamu kuraishisu:These OAVs were among the first Japanese series released as such in the U. S. and are remembered fondly by fans. An early example of cyberpunk that borrows heavily from Blade Runner and Robocop, Bubblegum Crisis depicts the adventures of the female vigilante group the Knight Sabers. In form-fitting, high-heeled mecha suits, Sylia, Priss, Linna, and Nene fight the rogue cyborgs of the sinister Genom Corporation in MegaTokyo, 2032. Sylia's brother Mackie, and A. D. Cop Leon, Priss's long-suffering suitor, assist them. The first three episodes (1987) form a single continuity; "Revenge Road" (1988) depicts a battle between an embittered man and a motorcycle gang. "Moonlight Rambler" (1988) and "Red Eyes" (1989) pit the Saber Knights against vampire cyborgs prowling MegaTokyo. [+]
"Double Vision" (1990) introduces the mysterious pop star Vision, and "Scoop Chase" (1991), in which a high school journalist tries to unmask the Knight Sabers, ends the series on a silly note. The direction and design in the first trilogy look decidedly old-fashioned, but the later adventures grow increasingly sophisticated. Odd notes include suggestions of lesbianism, officer Daley's homosexual passes at Leon (who gets better-looking in each redesign), and Mackie trying see his sister in her underwear. Included in the set are Hurricane Live! 2032 and 2033, collections of music videos, and concert footage of the Japanese voice actresses singing the pop songs used in the series. Unrated; suitable for ages 16 and up: Violence, grotesque imagery, profanity, brief nudity, tobacco use, and sexual situations, including prostitution. -Charles Solomon.

Review 3x3 Eyes: Descendant / Orion / MGM:Pa-Bo Ayanokoji believes she's a typical high school girl who likes to hang out with her friends. Her world is shattered when the mysterious warrior Yakumo reveals she is not a human girl, but Pai, the last surviving Sanjiyan or holy demon. The rest of the Sanjiyans were exterminated 300 years ago when their king, Kaiyanwang, turned to evil. Now he is about to rise again, and his servants are trying to kill Pai, who can challenge him. Pai's memories of her past life in the blessed realm of Kunlun have been blocked by a spell; Yakumo takes her to Tibet for help breaking it. Along the way, he fights assorted villains led by the sniggering Choukai. Pai and Yakumo cross the barrier to Kunlun with the aid of treasure hunter Jake Macdonald and some Tibetan monks. In Kunlun, they battle Choukai and Kaiyanwang's chief henchman, Benares. The drawn-out climax proves disappointing. Pai and her friends never confront Kaiyanwang, just his servants (which probably means sequels are in the offing). [+]
Yakumo repeatedly gets beaten to a bloody pulp but magically heals himself. Typical of the heroes in "magical girl" series, he remains unshakably devoted to the simple and whiny Pai. Rated 16 and up for considerable violence, minor profanity, and nudity. -Charles Solomon.
