Review Trumpet of the Swan (Spanish) (Slip) / Sony Pictures:Jason Alexander's vocal performance as the hambone father of Louie, a mute trumpet swan, is quite simply the most entertaining element of Trumpet of the Swan, an animated version of E. B. White's children's novel. Given to long-winded speeches and flamboyant displays (Alexander's extended "death scene" after his character is knicked on the wing is a hoot), the former George Costanza's hot-air waterfowl partially salvages this oddly unmoving family feature. The story concerns the silent Louie (his thoughts are spoken by actor Jeffrey Schoeny), who suffers the ridicule of other swans but communicates a depth of feeling by playing a brass horn. The restless script has difficulty developing a coherent emotional rise; director Richard Rich (The Swan Princess) would have done well to cut back on the number of discrete episodes that rush by with dizzying, graceless speed. Joe Mantegna signs on as the voice of a big-city scoundrel who signs Louie to an exploitative music contract, while Mary Steenburgen plays Louie's mother, and Reese Witherspoon speaks for the hero's true love. -Tom Keogh.

Review Sonic the Hedgehog: Movie (Dub) / Adv Films:True to its Sega video-game roots, this futuristic 60-minute movie includes a lot of yelling, crashing, and exploding on the way to saving the world. Sonic and his sidekicks are determined to thwart a plan that would turn their Land of the Sky into the equivalent of The Land of Darkness, which lurks beneath the surface (and is obviously the former planet Earth). So they plow through to the center of the planet and the ancient city of Robotropolis (the former New York City?) to do righteous battle. The big question of the day is whether the usually evil Dr. Robotnik is telling the truth for once or sending the good guys into a trap. The tape's producers suggest viewers be at least 7 years old because of its violence, but the rudimentary nature of the animation will probably make it appealing only to hard-core action fans among the older-kid crowd. -Kimberly Heinrichs.

Review An American Tail:Don Bluth's An American Tail is based on the story of a young Russian mouse who is separated from his family in America and who later heads with his reunited kin out to the American West. It's pleasant, though not spectacular, and has its greatest problems in story development. Steven Spielberg produced with an eye toward creating animation hits outside of Disney, and he and Bluth certainly took a big step in that direction here. Kids like it a lot, and adults will warm to the sound of various familiar voices, such as Dom DeLuise as Tiger and Madeline Kahn as Gussie Mausheimer. It's also the source of the pop single "Somewhere Out There. " -Tom Keogh.

Review Mickey's House of Villains:If you think a gaggle of big-screen goons like Cruella, Jafar, and Captain Hook can muscle Mickey off Disney's House of Mouse stage, guess again. Here, the leader of the pack proves he's made of more than Swiss cheese in a Halloween battle to bounce the bad guys-banded together for the first time-from the belly-laugh-generating hot spot where he pulls host duties. Best of all, the classic-character misadventures keep rolling amid the maelstrom: Donald gets the short end of the broom when a busybody witch blows in, Goofy bungles a once-in-an-afterlife time shot at being a ghost, etc. By the time the mouse houselights go up, the evil cadre's out on its cartoon ear with only a song-the showstopping "It's Our House Now!"-to its credit. The hospitality's not so hot, but the frantic, feature-length dice of shorts and devious doings will find Disney devotees dancing in the aisles. -Tammy La Gorce.
