The deluxe "Collector's Edition Library Case" packaging is designed to be displayed with the spines creating the unforgettable face of this curvaceous cartoon queen. The collection also includes the exclusive Betty Boop "Boopliography," a booklet containing intriguing inside information on this popular cartoon and a special tribute from Richard Fleischer, son of modern animation pioneer and Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer. Volume 1: The Birth of Betty (54 min. ) Beginning with her 1930 debut in Dizzy Dishes as a canine cabaret singer, the wide-eyed wonder winks and wiggles her way to stardom in one hilarious adventure after another. These early films show her evolution into the vivacious vamp she would become, and also feature a special introduction from Max Fleischer's son, Richard. Volume 2: Pre-Code (108 min. ) Betty turns up her megawatt star power in a racy round of pre-Hays Code adventures, from her oh-so-hot hula with the Royal Samoans to her daring bareback escapades under the big top. The curvaceous cutie then brings down the house in a jazzy collage of cartoon classics featuring a cavalcade of performances by Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Rudy Vallee, and Ethel Merman. [+]
Volume 3: Surrealism (110 min. ) Take a surrealistic journey into the wonderfully weird world of the Fleischer Studios, where everyday objects take on a loopy life of their own. Then the antics continue when the saucy siren of the silver screen embarks on adventures ranging from a Booped-up birthday party to a supernaturally silly visit with a psyched-out psychic. Volume 4: Musical Madness (106 min. ) The madcap musical merriment continues with a treasure trove of toe-tapping tunes starring America's spit-curled sweetheart. Then join cartoondom's resident vamp for a rollicking romp through a cornucopia of classic fairy tales, from a close encounter with Mother Goose to a nasty scrape with a very big, very bad wolf. Volume 5: Curtain Call (110 min. ) It's showtime once again as America's sassiest scene stealer shines in merry musical tributes to Fanny Brice, Jimmy Durante, Maurice Chevalier, and more. She then teams up with the lovable, lighthearted professor known as "Grampy" for some most mechanical misadventures, from one goofy gaggle of gadgets to the next. Volume 6: Betty's Boys (108 min. ) You can be sure that wherever the boys are, Betty's sure to follow. Prepare to meet a new bushel of Betty's best buddies, including Little Jimmy, Henry, the funniest living American, and the Big Boss himself. From perilous predicament to flat-out flirtation, Betty always gets her man. Volume 7: Betty's Travels (100 min. ) Pack your bags and fasten your seat belts as Betty sets out on a whirlwind series of jaunts by plane, train, and automobile. Also prepare to meet Betty Boop's precious pet pooch, Pudgy. Cuddly, enthusiastic and loyal to the core, Pudgy became Betty's constant companion and was at her side for more than three years. Volume 8: Betty & Pudgy (94 min. ) The canine comedy continues in this chronicle of the adventures of Betty Boop and her cuddly companion, Pudgy the pup. Whether experiencing the first blush of true love or cutting loose with a classroom of funky barnyard pals for some swingin' scat in music school, Pudgy's always ready for an adventure. Also features closing comments from Max Fleischer's son, Richard.

Review The Incredible Hulk - Origin of the Hulk & The Power of Doctor Banner / Walt Disney Video:Discover the origin of the Incredible Hulk(TM) in this high-impact animated adventure. In a desperate race against time, Hulk's alter-ego, Bruce Banner, is trying to reverse his curse and return back to his normal self, but his arch-enemies have him on the run. Witness the fantastic transformation of the most powerful being that ever existed as the Incredible Hulk(TM) wages an all-out battle against his attackers and smashes his way to fight another day. There was some amazing, classic animation done for superhero cartoons done as far back as Max & Dave Fleisher's Superman series of the early 1940s (echoes of which can be found in Batman: The Animated Series). Those were done for the big screen; by the mid-1960s, superhero cartoons were being brought to television, and some of Marvel Comics' biggest heroes-Captain America, Spider-Man, Thor, and the Incredible Hulk-were the stars. Unfortunately, television didn't have much in terms of cachet-or production values-at the time, and all four heroes suffer for it. The Hulk gets short shrift here; the interesting thing about the character has always been twofold: the misunderstood misfit trying to make a quiet life for himself, and the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde duality of the Hulk and his alter ego, Dr. Bruce Banner. [+]
On the two episodes here-"The Power of Dr. Banner" and "The Origin of the Hulk"-the animation is minimal and barely serves to capture a single facet of either character's personality. It looks as if only a couple dozen pictures of the main characters were drawn; for the most part, this is a series of stationary illustrations with voiceovers and plenty of narration. -Randy Silver.

Review Rabbit Ears - How the Rhino Got His Skin/How the Camel Got His Hump / Rabbit Ears:Before Jack Nicholson utters word one of his unflappable, ultracool narration to How the Rhino Got His Skin & How the Camel Got His Hump, what's clear is that quality viewing lies ahead. The two fables comprising this 30-minute video storybook are authored by Rudyard Kipling, and leading up to them over the opening credits are the unmistakable chirps and melodic murmurs of Bobby McFerrin, who keeps up his wordless, joyful rants throughout both tales, making the world feel smaller and the stories-not your average fluffy, feel-good kids' fare-seem less dour. In the first, a hapless Parsee man somewhere on the Red Sea suffers the injustice of having his just-baked cake gobbled up by an ill-mannered rhino. To retaliate, he spreads itch-inducing crumbs and currants on the "piggy-eyed" beast's skin while he's bathing (this being Kipling's imagination, animals sometimes shed their skins to cool off), thus causing him to rub savagely against a tree for relief. The relentless rubbing leads to the formerly smooth-skinned rhino's wrinkling, which, the tone of this story suggests, serves him right. In the second tale, a camel gets his just desserts: It's the beginning of time, and everyone in the desert is hard at work getting the world in order. Everyone, that is, except the inexcusably idle camel, who sits lethargically chewing milkweed. His standard answer to those who implore him to move it (an ox, a dog, and a horse) is "HUMPH!"-an unsatisfactory response that spurs the "head man in charge of the desert" to deform him with the protuberances that all of camelkind sports today. Tim Raglin's sharply defined yet sandy-soft drawings capture each creature's temperament with exactitude, all the while portraying exotic, geographically and historically correct details such as the "Oriental splendor" of the Parsee man's hat gorgeously. This film earns a spot among the short shelf of well-rounded kids' titles: It's as stunning to watch as it is enchanting to listen to. [+]

Review Fist of the North Star / Orion / MGM:One of the first anime features, Fist of the North Star was based on a popular manga series set in the not-too-distant future, when Earth has been devastated by a nuclear holocaust. The scattered survivors huddle in ruined cities, awaiting an enlightened warrior-hero worthy of the title of "Fist of the North Star," who will start the planet on the path to recovery. That mythic hero arrives in the person O, who looks like a caricature of Sylvester Stallone drawn for an American Saturday morning cartoon show. The relatively simple story is burdened with many subplots involving evil brothers, betrayals, kidnappings, and murders, all needing endless expository scenes. Director Toyoa Ashida borrows shamelessly from the Rambo and Mad Max films, along with Frank Frazetta's illustrations. Fist of the North probably ranks as the most violent film in animation history, but after the fourth or fifth head explodes in gobbets of red paint, the effect becomes unintentionally comic. -Charles Solomon.

Review The Pebble and the Penguin:As a brief promo by a Sea World Animal Ambassador tells us before the movie begins, male penguins really do present pebbles to the females during a courtship that will result in a lifetime match. This post-Thumbelina Don Bluth/Barry Manilow effort gives us Hubie, a nerdy penguin whose love for the beautiful Marina, remarkably, is returned. Alas, before he can present her with a fine stone, his evil-and strangely buff-rival throws him into the swirling sea. Epic adventures and a comical sidekick result. Leopard seals and killer whales threaten, but kids will be entertained rather than frightened by this harmless, if less-than-brilliant movie. -Kimberly Heinrichs.
