Review Madeline's Halloween Spooktacular / Lions Gate:Madeline and her friends get into some spooky situations when they go to New York to celebrate Halloween in these two haunting episodes. Fans of Madeline in New York (1998) should rejoice at the opportunity to join Madeline for further adventures in the Big Apple. The fun begins when their New York pen pals invite the French schoolgirls to spend Halloween with them. The collection consists of two episodes: "Madeline's Halloween" and "Madeline and the Spider Lady. " In the first, Miss Clavel takes all 24 girls out for trick-or-treating in the big city. When they return home, Madeline finds a pair of spider-shaped earrings at the bottom of her bag. The girls go off on a search for the owner of the sparkly danglers. In the second episode, the grateful owner, Miss Clavel's cousin Fifi (looking a little like Morticia from the The Addams Family), lets the girls visit the radio station while she tapes an episode of her serial, "The Spider Lady. " While waiting outside the studio, the girls cook up their own spooky story, which (accidentally) ends up airing instead. New York goes into a panic for fear that polka-dotted ants are about to take over the city, and citizens start fleeing in droves. [+]It's a more humorous, less frightening take on the very real panic that greeted the original radio broadcast of H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds (in which Martians invade Earth). Madeline and pals find a fun way to assure one and all that there's nothing to fear. The moral is apt for children and adults alike: You can't believe everything you see or hear. -Kathleen C. Review Dumbo:A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. Only the decent Timothy Q. Mouse looks out for the little guy. Concerns about the un-PC "Jim Crow" crows, who mock Dumbo with the wonderful "When I See an Elephant Fly," should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast. [+]If you don't mist up during the "Baby Mine" scene, you may be legally pronounced dead. -Keith Simanton.

Review Belle's Magical World:This straight-to-video animated story is set in the Beast's castle which, as viewers know from the original Beauty and the Beast film, is under a spell until the Beast can learn to love. Starting with this familiar premise, Belle's Magical World plummets into three disjointed episodes surrounding Belle's life as a captive in the castle. In "The Perfect World," a misunderstanding of words erupts between Belle and Beast, made worse by a feigned apology. Fifi and Lumiere take the spotlight in "Fifi's Folly," when a romantic evening together becomes a chilling adventure inside a runaway sleigh. In "The Broken Wing," Belle entreats the Beast to act kindly toward a tiny songbird. Each tale offers a diluted moral message, yet the entire effort feels contrived and confusing, a ploy by the folks at Disney to add cash to their coffers by exploiting the popularity of the original motion picture classic. Review The Flight of Dragons / Warner Home Video:A good wizard finds his magical powers diminishing as this Rankin/Bass production based on the Peter Dickinson novel opens. His nemesis, the evil Ommadon (voiced by James Earl Jones at his deepest and scariest), swiftly takes advantage of the situation. Who will save the world? Why, none other than a young scientist-novelist-game inventor, named Peter Dickenson (mildly voiced by John Ritter), who is zapped from the future back into the time of dragons. Populating this Japanese-animation fantasy film are the titular fire-breathing dragons, the wizards, a knight, a maiden, some elves, and-in a feminist departure from tradition-a heroic bowwoman. The battles are fairly mild and most of the virtuous characters recover, making this a good choice for family viewing, as well as a staple for the fantasy fanatic's video library. -Kimberly Heinrichs.
