Review Varibale Geo (Dub) / Adv Films:Waitresses compete in the VG Martial Arts Tournament to see who's the strongest: they slide a card into a sort of parking meter and an arena appears wherever they happen to be. The winner gets $10 million and some prime real estate; the loser loses her clothes-in front of the audience. Yuka is favored to win, but her best friend Satomi needs the money to pay for her little brother's operation. Opposing them is the current champion Madame Reimi, who is attached to the vast Jahana corporation, where a sinister staff is involved in illegal biomedical experiments. With its ridiculous plot, physically overdeveloped but psychologically underdeveloped characters, and gratuitous female nudity, Variable Geo is, simply, fan service trash. Review Reboot 2 (Dub) / Adv Films:Future techies in search of screen-popping adventures souped up with the latest cyber lingo need look no farther than ReBoot: Season III, Vol. 2, (a series that airs on the Cartoon Network), which finds the formatless Matrix and AndrAIa along with their virtual pup, Frisket, fighting their way through a gamut of games, all of which have been infected by evil. The goal of the hard-bodied and green-tinged yet still good-looking pair, known among the folds of funny-looking creatures who inhabit the games as guardians, or good guys, whose job it is to "mend and defend," goes beyond superheroics. Mostly, they're interested in hopping a ride onto the Internet, where they can navigate their way back to their long lost home, Mainframe. In this endeavor, they're consistently stymied, but not much else stumps them, at least not for long. In episode 1 of this four-part tape, Icons, something suspicious is sucking the life out of a nearly defenseless system; Matrix assembles an army of R2-D2-like recruits and heads off to Chron the Destroyer where, after a successful reboot, he's able to help make repairs. From there, in Where No Sprite Has Gone Before, Number 7, and The Episode with No Name, the pair defies deletion through crash-threatening tears, identity altering reboots, superviruses, and hostage situations. Whether they'll ever make it back to Mainframe is anybody's guess, but boys and girls 8 and up whose hard drives occupy a special place in their hearts will have an "alphanumeric" time waiting to find out. -Tammy La Gorce.

In part 2, "Birth of a Star" Kyosuke must convince Hayakawa not to spill the beans, and make sure that Madoka gets to the stage on time. It's a good thing he has a knack for teleportation.

Review Reboot 4: Battle Comes Home / Adv Films:The third season of this computer-animated series stumbles to a conclusion in these last four episodes. Despite the numerous writing credits, each episode juxtaposes long stretches of filler, where nothing really happens, with periods of frenzied but difficult-to-follow action. In "Showdown" archvillain Megabyte, who sounds like George Sanders as Shere Kahn in Disney's The Jungle Book, prepares to escape in a reddish sphere after a duel with Enzo. Mouse does something on a keyboard that causes tentacles to sprout from the sphere and destroy Megabyte. What she does and how she does it is never explained, and her preemptive strike prevents Enzo from destroying the villain, as a hero should. Simulations of Megabyte pop up in the next episode, while Bob struggles to save the cybercity, only to vanish inexplicably. The first all-computer-animated television series, Reboot inadvertently showcases the limits of the technology. The motion-capture technique gives the characters an unsettling weightless look, which robs their fights and gymnastics flips of any power. The elaborate surface patterns, brightly colored special effects, and three-dimensional camera moves can't disguise the fact that motion capture is still inferior to limited drawn animation. Rated "suitable for all ages," but violence (including suggestions of torture), grotesque imagery, and ethnic stereotypes are inappropriate for children under 10. Review Terry Pratchett's Discworld - Wyrd Sisters / Acorn Media:Author Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels offer an alternate reality that has proven irresistible to an avid, international audience-a universe where the world really is flat, after all, supported by four elephants floating through the cosmos on the back of a giant turtle. It's a world where fantasy conventions have been filtered through an antic, satirical lens that slyly warps the actions and motives of the wizards, witches, monarchs, and knaves that populate them, suggesting a sword & sorcery counterpart to Douglas Adams's venerable A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Developed for British television as an animated, six-episode miniseries, Wyrd Sisters marks the first attempt at transferring the franchise to video. As presented here on three tapes, with a running time of approximately 147 minutes, Pratchett's cracked re-imagining of familiar mythological themes retains its verbal wit and realizes colorfully stylized visual terrain, although modest animation techniques relegate its impact to the realm of older TV cartoons. Sci-fi aficionados spoiled by lavish computer graphics and the current big-screen state of the art will wonder what all the fuss is about. Pratchett's fans, however, won't mind. An intricate plot, set in motion by the murder of King Verence by the utterly dimwitted Duke Felmet, encompasses a smuggled baby, an itinerant theatrical troupe, a kiss lasting 18 years, time travel, and other pokerfaced twists of fate, cohering around the three title heroines, a coven of rather dotty witches. A droll, sociable Death (voiced by Christopher Lee) epitomizes the breezy comic spirit that fuels Pratchett's stories. -Sam Sutherland.

Review Macross Plus:A recut version of the four-part OAV (1994), the Macross Plus movie plays like a mixture of Top Gun, Gundam Wing, and Key the Metal Idol. It's 2040 on the planet Eden: former high school rivals Isamu Dyson and half-human/half-Zentraedi Guld Goa Bowman have become rival mecha test pilots. They're also still competing for the affection of Myung Lone, the producer for cybernetic singing sensation Sharon Apple. When an illegal "bio-neural" chip is implanted into the computer that generates Sharon, she becomes sentient, attacking Myung and attempting to lure Isamu to his death. Wild and crazy Isamu and serious Guld defeat the plot with their hotshot piloting. The film boasts elaborate computer-animated special effects and exceptionally well choreographed aerial battles, but director Shoji Kawamori correctly summed up Macross Plus as "a serious story with a silly plot.
