Review Hullabaloo 9-12 / Mpi Home Video:

Back in the mid-'60s, television's Hullabaloo was a show that gave music-hungry baby boomers a rare chance to see some of their heroes in action. But it was far from perfect, as the six episodes (plus 17 bonus performances) contained on this four-and-a-half-hour disc make abundantly clear. The shows are in black and white; the quality of the images is poor, especially by today's digital standards, and the sound mixing is generally atrocious. The performances mostly consist of live vocals set to prerecorded tracks. And as for the overall tone. well, suffice to say that in 1965-66, when Hullabaloo originally aired, Hollywood and the TV industry were utterly clueless when it came to youth culture and the burgeoning rock & roll scene, resulting in a hokey quality-ridiculous sets and props, go-go dancers galore-that was laughably square then, let alone now. Still, mixed in with the horrible Beatle medleys (the Supremes doing "I Feel Fine"? Oy!) and predictably disposable pop hits of the era (by Nancy Sinatra, Peter & Gordon, Freddie & the Dreamers, Herman's Hermits, etc. ) are the Byrds, the Animals, the Hollies, the Lovin' Spoonful, the Young Rascals, and other significant mid-'60s rockers, as well as the likes of Marvin Gaye, the Everly Brothers, and the Impressions. Review Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film, Complete Set 1-13 / HBO Video:

The award-winning team of David Gill and Kenneth Brownlow present a definitive and unparalleled look at the history of silent film in America: "Hollywood," narrated by James Mason. This 13-part series celebrates the birth of an industry, the town and people who made it all happen. People who, in a few short years, produced an enourmous range of spectacular, inventive and exciting films. From the arrival of the filmmaking pioneers early at the dawn of a new century, through the outbreak of the first World War; from the rise of romance, to the demise of the Old West; from when comedy was king, until the advent of sound. These are the stars, the scandals, the directors, producers, cameramen, stuntmen and, of course, the films themselves that created the legend we know as "Hollywood. ".

Review Remote Viewing - Psychic Spies: Remote Viewing Video Learning Series / UFO TV:

In 1995, the CIA admitted to sponsoring a super-secret government program called "STARGATE". For almost 20 years the government used "psychic spies" to remotely view people, places and events. Remote Viewing (RV) was the perfect intelligence tool, because it left no footprints and could access information independent of time and space. RV is similar to clairvoyance or ESP, and is a natural ability almost everyone possesses. The strict RV protocols were developed to isolate the imagination to allow a faint but pure information signal to flow through a person's mind. Since the RV program is no longer classified, we are able to present in this video series the top experts in the field of RV research and operations. Learn the history and the latest applications of this amazing field of "intuitive science", and discover for yourself how to develop and use your own RV skills. Review Big Bear / Bfs Entertainment:

By now the revisionist Western chronicling the horrors suffered by the American Indian has become a genre as codified as the old Westerns ever were. And, regrettably, the new genre is just as susceptible to oversimplification and facile audience manipulation. This Canadian miniseries, based on a true story, manages to avoid all pitfalls, however, filling out its three-hour running time not with tirades faced toward the choir or half-baked mysticism, but with generous and sympathetic portraits of people caught up in the waves of history-inevitably to their peril. When Canadian officials insist that Cree chief Big Bear (Gordon Tootoosis, in a performance of nobility but also with enough of an old man's confusion about a changing world to avoid cardboard saintliness) sign a treaty and lead his people off the buffalo-rich land where they have lived, he refuses to sacrifice his tribe's independence. But the coming of the soldiers is a fait accompli-in a nice touch the whites' halting attempts at Cree are identical to the ungrammatical "Injun" speech of movies past-and the arrogance and casual cruelty of the reservation agents spur younger members of the tribe to declare war. Big Bear is philosophical about what he sees as an unwise move, while his wife Running Second (the formidable Tantoo Cardinal) spitefully mocks the "brave young men" whose actions have forced them on the run. Only one of many scenes testifying to the expansive humanity director Gil Cardinal brings to this film. -Bruce Reid.

Review Cadillac Desert - Water and the Transformation of Nature: Boxed Set (Includes Chinatown 1974 Feature Film) / Homevision:

How did we turn thousands of square miles of the American Southwest into fertile farmland and thriving cities? How do we intend to sustain the life now dependent on our engineering? These and many other thoughtful questions are raised by the Cadillac Desert series, based on the book by Marc Reisner and on Last Oasis by Sandra Postel. Extensive interviews with the authors, dam builders, environmentalists, and those directly effected (for better and worse) by the water works are enlightening, sometimes funny, and sometimes maddening. The photography is brilliant, contrasting the natural beauty of the wetlands and deserts with the artificial beauty of the dams, waterways, and agricultural lands. Absorbing, engaging, and entertaining, Cadillac Desert is an excellent introduction to the recent history of our "invisible resource. " This set also includes the Jack Nicholson movie Chinatown, which illuminates many of the issues brought to light in this series-Rob Lightner No fiction could match the real-life drama behind the struggle for water in the modern American West. An extraordinary tale of triumph and disaster, of heroes and scoundrels, Cadillac Desert chronicles the growth of civilization in the desert, the resistance to this achievement, and the dangers it has created at home and abroad. From executive producers Jonathan Taplin (The Prize) and Sandra Itkoff (producer of The Twentieth Century Project). After learning the facts behind the fiction of Chinatown, the Cadillac Desert boxed set provides a perfect opportunity to "revisit" this Academy Award®-winning classic. From Paramount Home Video, Chinatown stars Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. 1974, Rated R, Closed Captioned, Color, Paramount, Trademark ® and © 1997 by Paramount Pictures. [+]

Review Sigmund & The Sea Monsters Complete Episodes Gift Box / Rhino / Wea:

Sid and Marty Krofft created many wildly creative series for Saturday morning television. One of the most memorable was Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, the story of a sea creature, Sigmund, who runs away from his family's cave by the ocean and is adopted by two human children. This collection from Kid Rhino showcases all 29 episodes that originally ran from 1973 to 1975, and gave us quite interesting characters like Sigmund, Big Mama, and Sheldon the Sea Genie (played by comedian Rip Taylor). The shows are chock full of pop-culture references from the time period, and feature many familiar voices behind the monsters. Although the plot rarely changes (the kids must keep Sigmund hidden from the other humans around them, despite the trouble that he causes), they are all enjoyable to watch. Each episode concludes with a song written by the team of Boyce and Hart (responsible for many of the Monkees' early hits) and sung by star Johnnie Whitaker (Jody on Family Affair). Of course, the theme song, "Friends," is widely remembered and as hummable as it ever was. The foam rubber and goggle-eyed monsters are far from scary, but do provide a glimpse into the past, when high-tech special effects weren't necessary to create fantasy worlds. The show revels in its simplicity, and it appears as if the actors had as much fun making the series as we do watching it. -Zachary Lively Episode Guide Volume 1 The Monster Who Came to Dinner - (Episode 1, original air date September 8, 1973) - Sigmund's family throws him aout because he doesn't want to scare people. When the boys discover his note they rush out after him. The Curfew Shall Ring Tonight - (Episode 9, original air date November 17, 1973) - After breaking Aunt Zelda's favorite salad bowl, Sigmund defies curfew and heads home to pick up 50 clams he's got hidden to buy her a new one.
