Review Oz - The Complete First Season / Hbo Home Video:From the Oscar and Emmy winning team of Berry Levinson (Rain Man, Diner) and Tom Fontana, OZ is set deep inside the Oswald Maximum Security Prison, in an experimental unit known as Emerald City. Em City focuses on prisoner rehabilitation over public retribution. There's one set of rules from the outside looking in, and another once you're inside. Every group - Muslims, Latinos, Italians, Aryans - stick close to their mutual friends and terrorizes their mutual enemies. OZ is a wake-up call. HBO's violent men-behind-bars drama is an addictive, testosterone-driven soap opera for guys. The eight episodes of the first season set the style for the show: a massive cast of a vivid characters on both sides of the bars, four or five stories unleashed at a breakneck pace and framed by angry, oddball introductions, and a soaring casualty rate. Created by Homicide producer Tom Fontana, this drama quickly earned its rightful reputation as the most brutal show on TV. It's simple chemistry: combine volatile ingredients in a confined space, shut tight, and shake. The yellow brick road of the Oswald Correctional Facility (affectionately known as "Oz" among the inmates) leads to "Emerald City," an antiseptic cellblock of cement and glass overseen by prison-reform advocate Tim McManus (Terry Kinney). [+]
The first episode introduces its two most compelling inmates: meek lawyer Beecher (Lee Terguson), who transforms from a vulnerable lamb to a fearless, drug-addicted wildcat, and Muslim activist Kareem Said (Eamonn Walker), a fiercely non-violent leader whose campaign for reform explodes in a season-climaxing riot. The stunning first-season cast also features Ernie Hudson (the warden), Rita Moreno (a worldly drug-counseling nun), and Edie Falco (who jumped from her role as a single-mother prison guard to mob wife in The Sopranos). It carries no rating, but the drug use, nudity, and brutal violence make this highly inappropriate for young viewers and unsuited to the squeamish. Oz pulls no punches in its portrayal of prison violence and predatory abuse. -Sean Axmaker.

Review David Halberstam's the Fifties / A&E Home Video:It was America's coming-out party a decade-long celebration of growth and power, fueled by the victory in WWII. Based on Pulitzer Prize winner David Halbertstam's bestselling book, this lively series casts a nostalgic eye back on the years of Ozzie and Harriet and the Hula Hoop, years which nonetheless paved the way for the tumult of the decades to follow. From Sputnik to Elvis, bobby-socks to the Kinsey Report, DAVID HALBERTSTAM'S THE FIFTIES is a breathtaking collage of the people, music, memories, fads and issues that sent the first Baby Boomers on their way. Countless interviews, clips from landmark TV shows and movies like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and specially-produced music videos set to original '50s hits capture the intense tapestry of optimism and fear, repression and discovery that was THE FIFTIES. The 1950s are fast becoming what the 1960s were not all that long ago. Which is to say that the era that set the stage for the obviously upheaval-heavy '60s is getting its own undressing, and the interlocutors are finding all sorts of fascinating stuff. Historian David Halberstam, who logged time in the era as a journalist and civil rights struggle participant, helped nudge the era's current popularity with his book, which gives this exhaustive six-tape series its name. And given art historian Karal Ann Marling's consideration of the era as the dawn of "visual culture" in her own book on the 1950s, it's fitting that this set is so geared towards the visual. From its coverage of the McCarthy era and the baby boom to its study of the growth of affluence as a national ideal, the set roots many of its themes through the ways 1950s culture came together as a visual spectacle. First there is television ad-mogul Rosser Reeves and the leveraging of the television as a sales machine, then there's Richard Nixon's first career salvage job via television, then there are the running visual (and literary) constructions and interrogations of domesticity, and much more. [+]
Also prevalent in the set, though, is the concurrent rise of the "men's magazine" (i. e. , Playboy), the then-alluring first edition of the Kinsey Report, and the spread of a manifest culture of desire-which in writing sounds amply intellectual but in viewing is fast-paced, compelling, and easy to engage for long periods of time. Probably most compelling in the set is the way the era's visuals changed society irrevocably-and swiftly. The civil rights era's catapult was due in large part to general citizenry witnessing fire hoses and police dogs trained on children and the astonishing power of Martin Luther King Jr. 's nonviolent resistance. On another level, the visuals also created both a dizzying array of styles, captured here in regard to automobile manufacturers, and the flattening of one style into a de facto standard, captured here in the spreading communist fear, the rise of McDonald's restaurants, and even Elvis Presley. This series is the best up-close focus on the 1950s, making it essential to students of American culture, general history fans, and anyone curious about the tendrils of culture in the United States. -Andrew Bartlett.

Review The Three Stooges Nyuk's Times 10:Nyuks x 10 includes 10 tapes: All the World's a Stooge with "Grips, Grunts, and Groans" and "3 Dumb Clucks"; A Bird in the Head with "Dizzy Pilots" and "Three Sappy People"; Three Little Pirates with "Uncivil War Birds" and "Back to the Woods"; A Plumbing We Will Go with "Violent Is the Word for Curly" and "Punch Drunks"; So Long Mr. Chumps with "Three Loan Wolves" and "Even as IOU"; Rhythm and Weep with "Back from the Front" and "The Three Troubledoers"; What's the Matador? with "Boobs in Arms" and "Mutts to You"; Healthy, Wealthy, and Dumb with "Disorder in the Court" and "Pardon My Scotch"; Micro-Phonies with "Uncivil Warriors" and "Three Missing Links"; Idiots De Luxe with "I Can Hardly Wait" and "Idle Roomers. " This boxed set of 10 tapes offers 30 Curly shorts from the long-running Columbia series. It can be used as an excellent representative sampling of how Curly, Larry, and Moe made a fortune for their studio (although their share was quite low) or as the perfect first step toward owning the entire series. The years range from 1934 ("Punch Drunks") to 1946 ("Three Little Pirates")-their 2nd and their 96th short respectively-and one might wish they were in chronological order. Curly's illness sadly shows in his last features before Shemp took his place in the 98th short. Still, such a wide time period, out of order or not, allows us to consider how much of their material and basic situations were recycled. Curly is always the one who goes berserk at the scent of a particular perfume, the sound of a certain tune, or the sight of a mouse. In only one episode, "I Can Hardly Wait," is Moe the one inflicted with a malady (nervous collapse), and in a plot reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy's Saps at Sea, everything conspires to make him worse. Often the plots are so weak that in some cases, a goodly percent of the 18 minutes is spent on a single routine, like trying to get Curly out of a tight sweater. [+]
But one does not watch these films for plot, logic, or anything other than the sheer fun of seeing three seasoned professionals making their audiences laugh. The videos are excellent, except for some scratch lines in the last minutes of Three Little Pirates, which does not exist, apparently, in an unblemished print. -Frank Behrens.
