Review Dr. Andrew Weil Collection: Eight Weeks To Optimum Health, Spontaneous Healing, Eating Well For Optimum Health / Wellspring Media:

A botanist before he was a doctor, Andrew Weil thinks a lot about plants and the nature of nature when he considers human health. Drawn from his popular book of the same name, this 82-minute lecture (given at the New York Botanical Garden) touches on diet fads, the carbs vs. protein controversy, vitamin supplements, and fast food. Much of his advice is common sense: Eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, don't fall for extreme diets, pay attention to the kind of fats you eat, and increase your activity. But he complements these well-known principles with studies and examples, delivered in an entertaining way. The Australian study on fast-food fat he cites will send you speeding away from the local drive-through window, and the cultural observations he shares about the Japanese and French diets may convince you to finally try soy and eat smaller portions less frequently. Much of his advice is boiled down in concise screen graphics for easy note-taking. The only annoying thing about this tape is the frequent interruption by applause. Weil's delivery is charismatic without the distracting bursts of clapping to tell us so. -Kimberly Heinrichs.

Review America's Favorite Fun Stuff - Franks, Scoops, Tides, and Rides / Pbs Home Video:

In this delightful and delicious expedition, Rick Sebak, expert on roadside attractions, travels across America in search of the ideal ice cream parlor. He visits traditional family-run ice cream establishments to learn their secrets, and speaks with their customers about the mysterious allure of homemade ice cream. He also stops in at some better-known locations such as Ben & Jerry's, Howard Johnson's and the Robin Rose Ice Cream & Traffic School, among many others. America's Favorite Fun Stuff is a collection of four PBS shows about Americana, hosted by Rick Sebak. A Hot Dog Program celebrates hot dogs and the people who love them ("It's the ultimate food," exults one diner). This volume tours the United States in search of establishments that inspire motorists to take hot dog detours, from the Super Duper Wiener truck located off Exit 24 on I-95 in Fairfield, Connecticut, to the Coney Island in Denver-33 tons of concrete shaped like an enormous hot dog. Go behind the scenes at the nation's oldest operating traditional amusement parks with Great Old Amusement Parks. At one time, 2,000 such amusement parks dotted the nation's landscape. They have, sadly, dwindled to 600, and this program's wonderful footage-past and present-is a reminder of what we're missing. Smaller than contemporary theme parks and older than Disneyland, such cherished establishments as Playland in Rye, New York, Cedar Point in Ohio, and Idlewild and Kennywood in Pennsylvania have thrilled and delighted generations. [+]
An Ice Cream Show is a delectable documentary that tours the country to talk to people who make, sell, scoop, and study ice cream. The show visits local institutions such as Bassett's in Philadelphia and Matsumoto's in Haleiwa, Hawaii, presents the history of Howard Johnson's, and studies the science of ice cream at Penn State University. Finally, if you're not fortunate enough to have the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean in your back yard, you can still bask in Shore Things. You'll drive a car down Daytona Beach, people-watch at the Fellini-esque spectacle that is Venice Beach, stroll down the boardwalks of Atlantic City and Ocean City, observe how saltwater taffy is made, visit Kalibash, North Carolina ("the seafood capital of the world"), and romp on a different breed of beach, Dog Beach. -Donald Liebenson.

Review Haunted History / A & E Home Video:

A week of haunted history touring its away across a nation to prepare for Halloween, these four ghostly programs visit the local site of apparition sightings, telling the tales that have been handed down of tormented souls who continue to walk the earth – in America’s backyards. NEW ENGLAND (October 26): The arrival of the pilgrims, the Salem Witch trials, the War of Independence - Some believe this remarkable history set the stage for extraordinary hauntings. A heartbroken girl wanders the grounds of a Connecticut homestead, searching for her one true love… the spirit of a murderer strolls through the bar he owned 150 years ago… witnesses spot the image of a witch reportedly tortured on the grounds of the Joshua Ward House…a family of specters inhabits the legendary House of Seven Gables. NEW ORLEANS (October 27): The "Big Easy" is the definitive party town, setting records for alcohol consumption during Mardi Gras. But there is another form of "spirit" for which New Orleans is known. A voodoo queen lurks the grounds of her Gothic cemetery plot. a highly respected socialite reminds others of her secret, malicious past. [+]
and children of wealthy plantation owners continue to play on the grounds they once loved, before they and their mothers were murdered. CHARLESTON (October 28): The "grand dame" of the Old South harbors 300 years of mysterious apparitions: a love struck poet who wanders the house in which he died. a beautiful murderess still imprisoned in an abandoned jail. a slave boy who teases guests at a popular inn. a Confederate hero who keeps watch over City Hall. the headless torso of a soldier killed in the waning days of the Civil War. SAN FRANCISCO (October 29): In San Francisco and nearby San Jose, spirits roam, undeterred by skyscrapers and Silicon Valley. They include a murdered politician who still prowls the house where he died in 1859. a mournful female host who visits guests at an elegant hotel late at night. the ghostly builder of a sprawling mansion, the Winchester House, who build her house to ward off forces from beyond the grave. and the Lady in Blue, a restless soul said to frequent a beachside cafe, once the site of Prohibition-era revelry.

Review The Blue Planet - Seas of Life 2 Pack (Parts 3 & 4) / BBC Video:

See some of the most startling wildlife photography ever to have been shown on television! The Blue Planet: Seas of Life features amazing new discoveries and photographic breakthroughs in four episodes. The Blue Planet: Seas of Life #3 features: "Seasonal Seas" and "Coral Seas. " The Blue Planet: Seas of Life #4 features: "Tidal Seas" and "Coasts. " The BBC's landmark series on marine wildlife continues with this pair of uncommonly beautiful episodes. "Seasonal Seas" focuses on the explosion of life that accompanies every annual blooming of plankton, numbering in the countless billions and captured here with brilliant microphotography. The plankton provide a seasonal feast for a stunning variety of creatures, including the gigantic basking shark, sea otters, immense swarms of jellyfish, bat rays, and dancing Australian squid. In massive kelp forests, we witness such delightful sights as white-sided dolphin playing a game of "pass the seaweed. " In "Coral Seas" miles-long reefs of living coral are explored, from deep within (requiring brief computer animation) to the surrounding environs, where you'll see white-tipped sharks in a feeding frenzy while beautiful harlequin shrimp wrestle with a starfish. "Tidal Seas" explores the myriad life forms that thrive when lunar gravity pulls the oceans offshore. These include surfing snails, diving osprey, breeding stingray, and bottlenose dolphin digging for razorfish in the shallow tidal flats. [+]
In a delightful time-lapse sequence, sand bubbler crabs clean an entire beach for food, leaving millions of filtered sand balls in their paths. "Coasts" is easily the most brutal episode, but no less mesmerizing. Here we witness the battles of elephant seals, the tenacity of Galapagos iguanas, and the mating rituals of the walrus. Surely the most unexpected, and horrifying, sequence is that of the orca, earning its "killer whale" nickname by capturing, killing, and tail-tossing a seal pup-a performance so mysteriously primal that even the most seasoned marine biologist will be utterly amazed. Stunningly photographed, The Blue Planet: Seas of Life represents a filmmaking legacy that will reward viewers for many years to come. -Jeff Shannon.

Review The Century-America's Time (Boxed Set) / ABC News:

Covering the entire 20th century in one video series is an ambitious project, but one that Peter Jennings and ABC News are up to. In The Century: America's Time, a 12-part documentary on six videotapes that is a companion to the book of the same name, Jennings guides us through a century of technology and advancement like no other. As he says in his introduction to episode 1, "Seeds of Change," "Unlike previous centuries where leadership was defined by royalty and other rulers, the 20th century more than any other was shaped by the will and actions of the common man. " The series is a sweeping presentation of the United States of the 1900s and tries to encompass a mind-boggling amount of history. And while at moments the videos may leave you longing for more, Jennings does an excellent job of creating smooth segues between disparate pieces. The first episode, for instance, begins with the influx of immigrants at the turn of the century and touches on Jim Crow laws, moving pictures, planes, Henry Ford, the sinking of the USS Maine, child labor, suffragettes, the Panama Canal, imperialism, and more, right up to the beginning of World War I. The archival footage is stunning and interviews with historians, veterans, journalists, POWs, politicians, authors, celebrities, and common people help bring the past to life again. Mickey Spillane discusses the speakeasies of the 1920s; Dennis Hopper talks about Easy Rider in the '60s; Tom Wolfe reads from The Bonfire of the Vanities for the episode on the '80s. Eudora Welty, E. L. [+]
Doctorow, Martin Scorsese, John Updike, Pat Buchanan, Oliver Stone, Stephen E. Ambrose, among many others, lend their voices to this documentary. Yet, despite the great names, at times the pictures and people are allowed to speak for themselves, without intrusive narration-the stark images of the Challenger explosion or the sad words of a political activist mourning the death of his partner to AIDS are more powerful because of it. This chronological tale (with the exception of the last episode, "Then and Now," which is arranged thematically) is an insightful and poignant reminder of all the marvels-and tragedies-of America in the 20th century. -Jenny Brown.
