Review AFI's 100 Years, 100 Movies: American Film Institute (Complete Edition) / Image Entertainment:

In 1998, the American Film Institute undertook to determine, by vote of 1,500 of America's movie professionals, filmmakers, historians, critics, agents, actors, executives, and the like, bona fide film people all, the 100 Greatest American Films of All Time. That is, by commemorating the last century, which encapsulates the entire history of American narrative film (not really a century, beginning in the teens, and extending through the end of 1997 for voting purposes-you do the math), the AFI attempted to establish a definitive list of the top 100 by a popular vote of the industry. The result was aired on CBS in June 1998, in this 145-minute TV special. Top-loaded as it is with sentimental favorites, the list serves best as a celebration of American film, with short clips of favorite moments from the films, annotated by filmmakers as august as Martin Scorsese and Sidney Lumet, among many, many others. Learn what makes Dustin Hoffman or Burt Reynolds weep, if you must. But as a list of the "greatest" American films of all time, the list is greatly lacking-no Buster Keaton, no Lubitsch, scant silents. these are a few of the objections a knowledgeable filmgoer might make. Better to use this program to whet one's appetite for more films, to re-view past favorites, and explore those of others, to argue with it for its omissions and slights. [+]
That's if one can get past the constant reminders of our hosts, Jodi Foster, Richard Gere, and Sally Field, that what we are seeing are THE GREATEST AMERICAN FILMS OF ALL TIME. -Jim Gay To commemorate the first century of American moviemaking, the American Film Institute has embarked on a celebration of America's greatest movies-"AFI's 100 Years. 100 Movies. " This ten part retrospective explores many aspects of the human condition from the depths of depravity, horror and the dregs of underworld crime to the heights of heroism and passionate romance, covering the many genres, styles and types of films that make up the first 100 years of the glorious American film, as chosen by Hollywood's top directors, writers, stars and executives. Hosted by Jodie Foster, Richard Gere and Sally Field, narrated by James Woods.

Review The Harrison Ford Collection (Witness, Sabrina '95, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger) / Paramount:

When Samuel (Lukas Haas), a young Amish boy traveling with his mother Rachel (Kelly McGillis), witnesses the murder of a police officer in a public restroom, he and his mother become the temporary wards of John Book (Harrison Ford), a detective who's been assigned to solve the crime. After suspect lineups and mug-shot books yield nothing, Samuel, in the most memorable scene of the film, recognizes the murderer as a narcotics agent whose picture he sees in the precinct. Once Book realizes that the police chief is in on it, too, he whisks Samuel and Rachel back home to Amish country, where he himself goes into hiding as a plain Amish man. The juxtaposition between the life of the Amish and the violence of inner-city police corruption work surprisingly well for the story, and Kelly McGillis as the falling in love widow gives an almost perfect performance. Directed by Peter Weir, the film is extremely successful in drawing the viewer into its world and, accordingly, is immensely entertaining. The only thing that mars its polish is the one-dimensional, almost cartoonish handling of the upper-echelon police corruption-a subtler, more realistic treatment of this aspect of the story would have rendered the film near perfect. -James McGrath.

Review Rambo Trilogy (Widescreen Edition) / Live / Artisan:

Six hours of monosyllabic John Rambo high jinks, best savored in surround sound (for the bone-rattling explosions) and with your brain on pause (for everything else). Sylvester Stallone's second signature character, after Rocky, a seething ex-Green Beret killing machine, went from Viet-vet victim in the original picture, First Blood, flipping out over the ingratitude of his beloved homeland, to a muscle-bound terminator in Rambo III, mowing down Commies in the deserts of Afghanistan. You should consider bypassing the boxed set in favor of just the middle chapter, Rambo: First Blood Part 2, written by James Cameron and directed by George Pan Cosmotos. It's the most balanced and satisfying of the three films: Rambo is dropped back into 'Nam to rescue some POWs, and the action builds steadily in scale and ferocity. Each fireball seems to be bigger than the last. Of all the recent headbanger action movies, only the first Die Hard offers more bang for the buck. The underrated character actor Richard Crenna (a standout sleazebag in Body Heat), as Rambo's military mentor and staunch defender, is the series' secret weapon, providing some welcome human ballast. -David Chute.

Review Golden Age of Leather 3 (Coll) / Starz / Anchor Bay:

This pair of Joe Solomon-produced biker dramas are two of the better examples of the '60s subgenre. Jack Nicholson stars in Hell's Angels on Wheels as a moody cycle-riding gas station attendant adopted by Adam Roarke's gang when he jumps into a friendly bar fight. It's a fairly blatant rip-off of Roger Corman's The Wild Angels, but director Richard Rush (who next teamed up with Nicholson for the counterculture classic Psych-Out) offers up a lifestyle that's less nihilistic than simply meaningless and winds the unlikely friendship between restless Nicholson and rootless Roarke into an inevitable clash over basic philosophical differences (namely, Jack wants Adam's girl, and Adam wants Jack to kowtow to his leadership). William Smith is an unusual hero in Run Angel Run: he's a sellout on the run from vengeful biker clubs up and down the coast. Director Jack Starrett, a former actor in biker movies himself (Hell's Angels on Wheels, among others), creates a taut little picture highlighted by impressive stunts (Smith jumps onto the flat car of a moving train). Smith's brooding, taciturn performance mellows when he takes a job on a rural sheep farm and connects with a career farmer who used to be a barnstorming biker in the 1950s. "I gotta be free man, I gotta fly," confesses Angel, but at what price? Both pictures were cheaply made for quick playoff, but there's an interesting attempt to explore the tension between the thrill of the road and the hollow activity passing for freedom. The set comes in a cool-looking 8 by 12 tin storage container, but the tapes do not have separate video sleeves. -Sean Axmaker.

Review Planet of Life (4pc) / Discovery Channel:

Imagine a five-eyed lobsterlike creature hovering above the ocean floor, bringing food to its mouth through a long, wormlike trunk tipped with spines. Is this on Mars? No, planet Earth. It's an Opabinia regalis, an ancient creature whose discovery originally caused paleobiologists to laugh, and just one of dozens of outstanding 3-D computer-animation and life-size models that give the Discovery Channel's Planet of Life boxed set its verve. The series begins in The Birth of Earth, with a Mars-sized asteroid hitting Earth's primordial oceans, and traces the progression of lipidlike molecules to DNA, blue-green algae, and amoebas. Narrator Stacy Keach explains the evolutionary advantages of kidneys, bones, and lungs in early fish, and British Columbia's Burgess Shale reveals bizarre Cambrian fossils and their fascinating reconstructions in Ancient Oceans. Plants lure tetrapods onto land in When Dinosaurs Ruled and rock-eating, herbivorous dinosaurs evolve. The dinosaurs covered, especially berosaurus and triceratops, are treated thoroughly, but viewers expecting more vicious dinosaurs à la Jurassic Park will be disappointed. Creatures of the Skies traces the angiosperm revolution and flight adaptations from pterosaurs to archeopteryx to modern birds and butterflies. The Insect World looks at special adaptations, such as the compound eye, and explains bee language. Apes to Man presents different anthropoids with fabulous comparative footage of different skeletons walking. [+]
Evolution's Next Step answers questions like "Where did all Biosphere Two's oxygen go?" The series' life-size models, computer animation, expert interviews, and on-location film footage will appeal to anyone looking for a good visual overview of evolution. -Tara Chace.
