Review Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns / Pbs Home Video:

Accompanied by a menagerie of products, Ken Burns's expansive 10-episode paean, Jazz, completes his trilogy on American culture, following The Civil War and Baseball. Spanning more than 19 hours, Jazz is, of course, about a lot more than what many have called America's classical music-especially in episodes 1 through 7. It's here that Burns unearths precious visual images of jazz musicians and hangs historical narratives around the music with convincing authority. Time can stand still as images float past to the sound of grainy vintage jazz, and the drama of a phonograph needle being placed on Louis Armstrong's celestial "West End Blues" is nearly sublime. The film is also potent in arguing that the history of race in the 20th-century U. S. is at jazz's heart. But a few problems arise. First is Burns's reliance on Wynton Marsalis as his chief musical commentator. Marsalis might be charming and musically expert, but he's no historian. [+]
For the film to devote three of its episodes to the 1930s, one expects a bit more historical substance. Also, Jazz condenses the period of 1961 to the present into one episode, glossing over some of the music's giant steps. Burns has said repeatedly that he didn't know much about jazz when he began this project. So perhaps Jazz, for all its glory, would better be called Jazz: What I've Learned Since I Started Listening (And I Haven't Gotten Much Past 1961). For those who are already passionate about jazz, the film will stoke debate (and some derision, together with some reluctant praise). But for everyone else, it will amaze and entertain and kindle a flame for some of the greatest music ever dreamed. -Andrew Bartlett The story, sound, and soul of a nation come together in the most American of art forms: Jazz. Ken Burns, who riveted the nation with The Civil War and Baseball, celebrates the music's soaring achievements, from its origins in blues and ragtime through swing, bebop, and fusion. Six years in the making, this "soundbreaking" series blends 75 interviews, more than 500 pieces of music, 2,400 still photographs, and over 2,000 rare and archival film clips. The 10-part musical journey spotlights many of America's most original, creative-and tragic-figures, including Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis.

Review Warner Home Video / The Clint Eastwood Collection (In the Line of Fire/Unforgiven/Bronco Billy/Dirty Harry/The Outlaw Josey Wales/The Beguiled) Release date: 2000-08-01
List Price: $59.98

Review The Clint Eastwood Collection (In the Line of Fire/Unforgiven/Bronco Billy/Dirty Harry/The Outlaw Josey Wales/The Beguiled) / Warner Home Video:

As both an actor and a director, Clint Eastwood has had a string of unparalleled critical and commercial successes, from his trademark Westerns to the Dirty Harry action films. This set of six Eastwood films captures the actor as both cowboy and cop, from the 1970s to the '90s. Eastwood ventured into new territory with 1971's The Beguiled, a creepy and seductive thriller about an injured Civil War soldier who causes strife at an all-girls school. While there, he tempts an innocent girl (Elizabeth Hartman), and engages in an unnerving battle of the minds with the school headmistress (Geraldine Page, at her tortured best). The same year, Eastwood burst onto screens with Dirty Harry. This action blockbuster introduced the world to Harry Callahan while making waves with its aggressive violence and nonstop thrills. Eastwood himself helmed the vigilante Western The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) as well as the comedy Bronco Billy (1980), which films show Eastwood at different ends of the cowboy spectrum: a vengeful family man seeking revenge and an amiable traveling showman who runs a Wild West extravaganza, respectively. With his Oscar-winning film Unforgiven, Eastwood showed himself as the master of the revisionist Western, crafting a morally complex tale of Western justice that turns the notion of good guys and bad guys on its head. And he proved he still had star status with the thriller In the Line of Fire, playing an aging FBI agent who takes on a cunning psycho (John Malkovich) determined to assassinate the president. While this selection doesn't feature any Sergio Leone Westerns or Eastwood's later acclaimed dramas, it remains a great snapshot of a long and illustrious career. [+]

Review The Forsyte Saga, Series 2 / Acorn Media:

Granada Television's powerful adaptation of John Galsworthy's novels about the sprawling, fractious and aristocratic Forsyte family moves into the 1920s with Series Two, based on the author's To Let. The drama shifts to a new generation shouldering the burdensome legacies of an aging Soames (Damian Lewis) and his failed marriage to free-spirited Irene (Gina McKee). The lovely Fleur (Emma Griffiths Malin), Soames's daughter by second wife Annette (Beatriz Batarda), and strapping Jon (Lee Williams), son of Irene and Soames's bohemian cousin, Jolyon (Rupert Graves), develop a romance much to the dismay of their feuding parents. But the long reach of the elder Forsytes' sins-and the tenderness with which they seek redemption through their children-ultimately undercuts the young lovers' happiness. Meanwhile, sundry characters move in and out of the Forsytes' orbit, including a French businessman (Michael Maloney) stirring more troubles for Soames and an art dealer (Oliver Milburn) with designs on Fleur. As with Series One, all this will feel familiar to anyone who has seen the 26-part, 1967 version of The Forsyte Saga (the program that arguably created public television as we know it). Yet this updated effort renews and redefines the Forsytes' overlapping tragedies, with a more interior feel and a first-rate contemporary cast. As with its legendary predecessor, this Forsyte Saga depends heavily on the seemingly soulless Soames's slow evolution to humanity; Damian Lewis carries the load brilliantly. -Tom Keogh.

Review The Abbey, Box Set / Homevision:

The Abbey is a three-episode BBC program that traces a day in the life of Westminster Abbey. Narrated by actor Alan Bennett, the acclaimed author of The Madness of King George, this is the video equivalent of a tourist visit to the Abbey, and then some. The series differs from other similar documentaries in that the building is shown "at work," filled with the bustling activity of the custodial staff, delivery people, preservation crews, religious figures, schoolchildren, and especially tourists. Bennett watches the early morning rituals of the "Abbey family," the people who tune the organ, dust the statues, deliver the milk, attend the first service of the day, and such, and provides a general introduction to the layout and history of one of England's most popular tourist attractions. He visits the final resting places of many monarchs as well as Sir Laurence Olivier, Lord Byron, the Brontë sisters, and Jane Austen. Bennett stays to experience the Abbey's quiet evening rituals-the boys' choir practice, a private tour given by the dean, and compline, the last service of the day. Bennett's narrative is at times painfully slow, wry, and effete, but it includes a wealth of amusing and informative anecdotes, citations, and historical fact. This look at Westminster Abbey will appeal to anyone interested in the architecture, day-to-day life, and religious and lay history of this venerated British building. Think of it as a virtual tour. -Tara Chace Mary Queen of Scots, Chaucer, Sir Laurence Olivier and many more make Westminster Abbey one of the most visited grave sites in the world. [+]
Renowned playwright Alan Bennett explores the living history of the Abbey and meets the family of over 100 people who keep it running 365 days a year. History, religion, human nature, the English, and Englishness are all carefully examined as Bennett wanders through Westminster Abbey. Mingling with the crowds of tourists, watching cleaners and tour guides at work, and eavesdropping on services, dedications, and Abbey management meetings, Bennett presents an intimate portrait of the everyday life found in this historic building.

Review Fatal Fury - Collector's Box Set [Fatal Fury / Fatal Fury 2 / Fatal Fury: Legend od the Hungry Wolf] / Viz Video:

Based on the video game, Fatal Fury is widely regarded as one of the best kung fu anime features. The good guys are Terry "Hungry Wolf" Bogard and his brother, Andy; Thai kickboxer Joe Higashi; and the curvaceous ninja Mai. With their masses of spiky blond hair, narrow blue eyes, and sharp features, the Bogard brothers almost cross over into the "beautiful boy" genre, but they and Joe are muscled like dinosaurs. Mai, who has a crush on Andy, provides both humor and jiggle interest in a succession of minuscule outfits. The heroes are pitted against an assortment of equally buffed-out Bad Guys, led by Laocorn, a descendant of the ancient clan of Gaudeamus, who is seeking to obtain "the armor of Vulcan. " A relic going back to the time of Alexander the Great, the armor transforms anyone who wears all seven pieces of it into a god. But Laocorn's twin sister, Sulia, knows it will also make the wearer hopelessly evil: she enlists the Bogards and their friends to prevent her brother from acquiring the scattered pieces. Director Masami Obari uses all the standard tricks for the bone-crunching martial arts battles-blurs, streaks, slow-motion images of blows landing on skulls, camera spins, flashes of lighting, flames, and, of course, gobs of blood. Fatal Fury feels like a cross between an Indiana Jones film and a WWE tag-team match, and is sure to delight adolescent boys. (Rated 13 Up) -Charles Solomon.

Review Total Yoga - The Flow Series, Complete Set / Warner Home Video:

The three-volume set, Total Yoga: The Flow Series, contains three separate workouts, each targeting a different level of expertise. Total Yoga: Earth is the most basic workout drawing upon the foundations of Hatha Yoga. This 45-minute program introduces the fundamentals through detailed instruction on ujjayi breathing and sun salutation. Teachers Tracey Rich and Ganga White keep the asanas simple and demonstrate alternative postures for participants with compromised backs and necks. The cueing is both informative and clear, with valuable safety information about body alignment and form. This is a strong and thoughtful regimen that will be welcome for the first-time student and intermediate practitioner alike. Total Yoga: Water presents a 45-minute intermediate workout with basic combinations of standing postures and floor poses. Based in the foundations of Hatha vinyasa, Water draws on core energy and ujjayi breathing to increase focus and flexibility. Rich and White illustrate modifications for most postures and limit the amount of advanced asanas. Participants will get a solid workout through a series of sun salutations and familiar poses such as triangle and warrior. [+]
Spinal rotation and inverted postures are kept to a minimum, but some great flexibility-building movements are incorporated that will increase the students' capacity to work into these poses later in their discipline. The most rigorous workout is Total Yoga: Fire, which combines both classical and contemporary postures in one continuous flow. These poses are advanced to begin with, but the difficulty is increased with the length that each asana (pose) is held and the repetition of each vinyasa (series of poses). Rich and White silently lead this 60-minute session with verbal instruction from a narrator, who gives direction in both traditional yoga terminology and simple directional cues. The fundamentals of balance, ujjayi breath, and safety are addressed at the beginning, but the intensity level increases quite vigorously. Rich and White exhibit impeccable form and alignment through standing postures and three series of sun salutations. All of the programs in this excellent series end with meditations. -Olivia Voigts Internationally renowned yoga masters Ganga White and Tracey Rich bring over 60 years of teaching experience to Total Yoga: The Flow Series. This comprehensive and dynamic follow-up to the popular Total Yoga program is divided into three separate videocassettes, each representing a complete daily workout routine that brings the many benefits of yoga to all levels of students. The first in this series, Earth, builds foundations for balanced daily yoga routine for both the beginner and more experienced students, including sun salutations, standing and other classical postures, emphasizing flexibility, attention, flow and breath in a comprehensive, restorative manner. The second in the series, Water, advances the positions and postures for continuing students with the fluidity and grace of Hatha Vinyasa, flowing transitions, with a broader complement of standing, seated and inverted yoga postures. The third and final volume in the series, Fire, forges elements from the first two videos into a higher level of aerobic intensity for intermediate to advanced students.

Produced for Pittsburgh's WQED, this informative documentary tracks his rise as floor manager for various NBC programs, such as Your Hit Parade, to the major awards he received later in life, such as the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Along the way, he's seen launching public TV programs The Children's Corner, which featured a soon-to-be-famous puppet named King Friday, and Canada's MisteRogers.
