Review From a Whisper to a Scream - The Living History of Irish Rock / Winstar:The history of rock & roll in Ireland is presented in suitably lively fashion in a series produced by RTÉ, Ireland's national television network. In these first three installments from the series (each an hour long), the story advances from the 1950s to the early 1980s, with archival footage providing a glimpse of what all the excitement was about. The first stirrings of rock music in Ireland took the form of "show bands," hugely popular ensembles that gave many young musicians their start. Fascinating clips of concert film chronicle the development of two artists who helped define rock in Ireland: blues guitarist Rory Gallagher and Phil Lynott, a black Dubliner who formed the hard-rocking band Thin Lizzy. The seldom-interviewed Van Morrison reminisces a bit about his own formative years and influences, Bob Geldof talks about his career in the Boomtown Rats, and Bono, the Edge, and others comment on U2's earliest stirrings. Folk bands like Planxty are seen briefly in clips, as are primal Celtic rockers Horslips and punk pioneers the Virgin Prunes. The bits of concert footage, especially scenes of guitar hero Gallagher blazing away, would alone make these programs worth watching, but interviews with Irish music writers and intelligent observers such as film director Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot) make the programs informative as well as extremely entertaining. - Robert J. McNamara.

Review The Complete Walking with... Collection / BBC Video:Finally all three programs from the Emmy Award-winning Walking with. series-Walking with Dinosaurs, Allosaurus: A Walking with Dinosaurs Special, and Walking with Prehistoric Beasts-are available for the first time as a collector's set. The epic begins with a journey back 65 million years ago to a virtual lost world which has been recreated with spectacular digital effects and animatronics. The series continues as we follow the life and death struggles of "Big Al," the most complete allosaurus skeleton ever found. And finally, we explore our planet after the reign of the dinosaur and the succession of extraordinary creatures that came and went over the following millennia. Review Poltergeist Collection / MGM (Video & DVD):The law of diminishing returns was obeyed assiduously by the three Poltergeist movies, which have been boxed together to show how Hollywood milks an idea for every last ounce of cash it can. The best in this series is the original, directed by Tobe Hooper and produced by Steven Spielberg (who reportedly also lent a hand behind the camera), about a suburban family whose house turns out to have been built on an Native American burial ground. In the film's most clever touch, the disturbed spirits attack the family (and pluck its youngest daughter into the netherworld) through the TV. Oddly, though the family moves away in the sequel, the spirits follow them, then remain committed to harassing the daughter in number three, even though she's gone to stay with relatives. By that last film, the special effects have become the raison d'etre for the whole movie (which later launched an entire cable TV series). Why didn't they just call Ghostbusters? -Marshall Fine.

Review Poirot - Collector's Set 10 / Acorn Media:A suspicious suicide, a well-staged kidnapping, and a fatal fall-none of these are what they appear to be in this three-tape installment of episodes from the Agatha Christie's Poirot series. While true collectors will devour the whole set, newcomers to the series will appreciate "Murder in the Mews. " This plot of murder made to look like suicide has as many twists as an intricate Celtic knot and keeps the viewer guessing both whodunit and why until the final moments-it's tempting to watch this one a second time as soon as it's over. Unfortunately, "The Adventure of Johnnie Waverly" and "Four and Twenty Blackbirds" have motives so obvious, it's almost tedious to wait an hour for these cases to be solved. Of course, David Suchet's performance as the Belgian detective holds up through all three episodes, and Hugh Fraser is marvelously dim as Poirot's affable companion, Captain Hastings. -Larisa Lomacky Moore.

Review Bob & Margaret 4-6 (3pc) / Paramount:Bob and Margaret probably love one another, but it's hard to tell from their animated adventures, created in England (a short, Bob's Birthday, won an Oscar) and broadcast in the United States on Comedy Central. But that's just part of their charm-they're miffed at everything, including each other, just like any other noncartoon couple. This collection includes a couple of minor gems. In "The Burglary," B&M are robbed and attempt an even bigger scam-insurance fraud. "Trick or Treat" finds Bob learning of the death of a college chum he doesn't even remember and being sent into paroxysms of cosmic reflection (he hopes his dead relatives aren't watching him, he says, "because I have a lot of nasty habits"). Fans and completists will find this essential; more casual viewers might want to stick to sampling individual tapes (volumes 4 and 6 are more satisfying than volume 5). -David Kronke.

Review Maigret II (6pc) / Lance Entertainment:Michael Gambon recreates his celebrated role as best-selling author Georges Simenon's famous pipe-smoking Parisian sleuth. Set against the bars, boulevards and back streets of post WW II Paris, the cases Maigret must solve are more varied than ever, ranging from murder in a sleazy nightclub, to an intense political thriller and even a macrabe force. Once again, Chief Inspector Maigret is backed by his hand picked team of detectives, but above all, his own acute observation of people and matchless understanding of human nature are the keys to success.
