Review A Married Man / Lance Entertainment:Anthony Hopkins gives a subtle but searing performance as a lawyer who aspires to a political career but takes dangerous steps. Eager to escape the boredom of his marriage, John Strickland (Hopkins) first just flirts with the daughter of some friends. But when a social worker named Paula Gerard (Lise Hilboldt) approaches him for help with a case, she turns out to be not only young, pretty, and attracted to John, but is also the heiress to a large fortune. As the affair progresses, John discovers that both his wife and his mistress have secret sides-which come forth after a gruesome murder. A Married Man is slow but meticulous, and the breadth of psychological detail possible in a four-hour miniseries creates a vivid picture of marriage and adultery. Hopkins excels at the kind of stark inner conflict that burns with a cold but brilliant flame. -Bret Fetzer.

Review The Ultimate National Geographic Collection - Adventure / Nat'l Geographic Vid:The boxed set The Ultimate National Geographic Collection: Adventure includes the following three videos: National Geographic's Beyond 2000: New Explorers Some may assume that the world has been adequately explored, but this beautiful video from National Geographic comes as a bold announcement that some fantastic exploring has yet to be done. The new generation of explorers featured in this video, which includes Dr. Robert Ballard, celebrated finder of the Titanic; deep-sea researcher Sylvia Earle; noted Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass; and some younger mountaineers, mappers, and dinosaur hunters embody the bold spirit that National Geographic has always championed. Ballard's dive to the bottom of the Mediterranean is awe inspiring and a trip into a Tibetan jungle, in search of a mythical waterfall that turns out to be entirely real, is so realistically photographed that viewers will be shifting nervously in their seats as they peek over the edges of cliffs and into the rushing waters of the Tsangpo Gorge. A star of the new generation of mountaineers, Heidi Howkins (who set out to conquer the world's tallest peaks, Everest and K2, in one year), speaks eloquently about what makes an explorer, and her insights about seeking challenges both physical and mental resonate deeply. This video is a treat to watch, but the spectacular camera work aside, it is a thoughtful look at human nature and the compulsion some have to go beyond the edge of the map. -Robert J. McNamara National Geographic's Himalayan River Run Uninspired photography makes for a less-than-dynamic ride down Nepal's Dudh Kosi River. One hundred fifty porters, paid less than $3 a day, carry supplies for the party and clear airstrips for the ultralight-plane pilots who will help the kayakers navigate. The river, whose name translates into English as Milk River, features 80 miles of continuous white water and drops 11,000 feet in altitude. [+]
The story lacks tension and the conclusion is anticlimatic. Avid kayakers might be tempted to take a peek, as the paddlers are considered the top in their field, but with cameras working from the banks of the river, it's hard to get a good feel for this wild trip. -Cristina Del Sesto National Geographic's Surviving Everest: The Collector's Edition Surviving Everest, produced by National Geographic, bills itself as a "collector's edition" and is really three videos in one. The first segment, half an hour long, is titled "Surviving Everest" and features informative interviews with men who have made it to the summit and back. Their insights into the horrendous conditions faced by mountaineers on the world's highest peak are moving, and their explanations of particular obstacles (such as the treacherous Khumbu icefall) on the way up the mountain add much to one's understanding of the feat. The second part of the video, which lasts nearly an hour, is titled "Return to Everest" and profiles Sir Edmund Hillary, who in 1953, along with the Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay, first conquered Everest. Hillary has often returned to Nepal, and his involvement helping the Sherpa people is lovingly chronicled. The final segment of the video is a brief interview with Hillary that surprisingly-considering the high production standards of National Geographic videos-suffers from an odd audio problem in which Hillary's thoughtful answers are very clear but the questions put to him can barely be heard. All in all, this is a highly informative tape for those with a general interest in Everest, and the photography, as befits a Geographic production, is never less than spectacular. -Robert J. McNamara.

Review War and Remembrance, Vol. 2 (Boxed Set) / Mpi Home Video:A grand story of love and death, faith and betrayal, "War and Rememberance- The Final Chapter" completes the saga that began with "The Winds of War". World War II continues to rage and the Henry family is swept up in the battles of Europe and the Pacific. Natalie, Louis and Aaron experience the horror of the Holocaust firsthand at Auschwitz and the world changes forever with the American decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan. Filmed on location in ten countries, this extraordinary $150 million production is the largest and most expensive undertaking in television and motion picture history, featuring spectacular reenactments of the Allied invasions at Normandy and the Philippines. Herman Wouk's classic concludes in the final installment of a mini-series that is nothing shore of unforgettable. The second half of this massive miniseries covers events from the last two years of World War II with members of our fictitious family-the Henrys-scattered throughout the world. Pariah "Pug" Henry (Robert Mitchum) visits Russia and England as an advisor-and proposes to his much-younger lover, Pamela (Victoria Tennant)-before retuning to the Pacific theater to join his son Byron (Hart Bochner), a submariner, in battling the Japanese. Meanwhile, Byron's wife, Natalie (Jane Seymour), and her uncle (John Gielgud) continue their harrowing plight, starting in the "Paradise Ghetto" and leading to the Auschwitz concentration camp. This half-11. 5 hours-aired on ABC in May 1989, six months after the first half. [+]
Unfortunately there is no kinetic battle sequence like the first half's Midway clash to absorb the viewer. Director Dan Curtis relies more on newsreel footage (and the sometimes heavy-handedness of narrator William Woodson) to cover large events. To compensate, the filmmakers give inordinate screen time to the conspiracy to kill Hitler (Steven Berkoff) by his inner circle. Like in Herman Wouk's novel, Hitler's decision to eliminate the Jews is the backbone of the entire series and the film's steely reenactments of these events-an amazing achievement for network television-is quite harrowing. Authenticity (filming at Auschwitz) plus ace performances (Seymour has been rarely better, Gielgud is outstanding) combine for a powerful statement, although the whole production is sometimes weighed down by the soap-opera elements of the Henrys' lives. The original Winds of War miniseries had a higher caliber cast, which is missed here. However, a few actors shine in their atypical performances, including Barry Bostwick (who tied with Gielgud for the Golden Globe) as a flamboyant submariner and David Dukes as a desk side attaché who reaches new depths in the war. Although admired and very watchable, the series did not impact the industry as much as its predecessor or sweep the award circuit as other miniseries (Roots, Holocaust, etc. ) did, although it did take home the Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries. The 7-DVD set contains an informative booklet, a CD soundtrack, and a disc of extras. Dan Curtis makes comments over 70 select minutes of the series (shown out of context), hitting the highlights of filming, a nice way of letting the filmmaker talk without searching for the commentary throughout the various discs. There's a new 30-minute feature combining new and old footage on the making of this massive production, and a 15-minute featurette on composer Bob Cobert. -Doug Thomas.
