Review Paddington Bear 3-Video Box Set / Time Life Video & Television:

Dear Aunt Lucy, I've just compiled 42 of my favorite stories into a tidy little collection, called The Adventures of Paddington Bear. Do you remember all the post cards I've sent you from around the world? Well, now children (perhaps 3- to 7-year-olds) can learn from these many international adventures of mine. Imagine a little bear such as I nearly becoming a NASA astronaut, a Chinese acrobat, or a sumo wrestler! Whether at home in England or abroad, kind words and marmalade sandwiches often save the day. Each story in my 300-minute collection unfolds like the classic Paddington Bear tales told by author Michael Bond, and contains delightful animation with high attention to detail. One minor curiosity: the little booklet enclosed with the collection proves as chaotic as my trip through the London underground. Best to ignore it, pop in a show, and enjoy a lovely marmalade sandwich! Fondly, -PB (as told to Liane Thomas).

Review The George Carlin Collection / Mpi Home Video:

Once upon a time, George Carlin was a closely cropped, dues-paying, Ed Sullivan-approved comedian popular for his fast-paced satire on any number of (mostly safe) topics. That was during the 1960s; by the start of the '70s, a restless Carlin had removed his tie, broadened the range of his trippy observations, and kicked up a freedom-of-speech challenge to laws governing obscene language. He drew a dedicated, young audience and later the attention of Home Box Office, a fledgling cable channel seeking ways to distinguish its programming from that of more restrictive, commercial networks. A relationship was born that lasted more than two decades and resulted in a dozen uncensored George Carlin comedy specials on HBO. The George Carlin Collection, a five-volume set, skims some of the best material from that hefty television legacy and puts us in touch again with Carlin's classic repertoire. On Location with George Carlin revives his slightly tentative 1977 debut on cable, taped at the University of Southern California and featuring superb bits about playing Monopoly and shopping while stoned. George Carlin Again! offers an in-the-round performance from 1978 and inspired pop philosophy on the nature of time. Carlin on Campus and Carlin at Carnegie are fine touchstones from the '80s, while Personal Favorites constitutes a worthy greatest-hits package culled from a number of Carlin/HBO specials. Carlin freaks will gobble it all up, while more casual observers will cherish such hall-of-fame material as "Baseball vs. Football" and "A Place for My Stuff. [+]

Review The Forsyte Saga - First Generation / BBC Warner:

This first half of the 1967 original, 26-episode British television series (which aired on PBS two years later and inspired the creation of Masterpiece Theatre) is both literary soap opera and sprawling, Dickensian tale of love, money, and destiny fatefully intertwined. Set in the late Victorian era, the early chapters of The Forsyte Saga (based on several works by John Galsworthy) merrily buzz with a large and hopelessly confusing roster of Forsyte kin, most creaking with age and cackling ridiculously over family gossip. As these elders pass on, a core cast including Eric Porter as Soames, an acquisitive "man of property," Nyree Dawn Porter as the ethereal Irene, and Kenneth More as Jolyon-the family's artistic black sheep-becomes our key players, wrestling with their definitions of "value" (i. e. , that which can be measured versus that which can't), procreating, and stumbling in the dark for happiness. -Tom Keogh The miniseries that started in all! In 1969, a internationally-acclaimed BBC show began airing on the fledgling public broadcasting network. The Forsyte Saga, in telling the remarkable story of a nouveau riche English family, introduced America to a new kind of TV. Millions of Americans devoted the next half-year of their lives to following the frank treatment of all sins, foibles and peccadillos of the Forsytes and their circle. The series was so popular that Masterpiece Theatre was created to meet the new demand for great literary adaptations. With a cast of 150, 2000 separate costumes and over 100 sets, this sprawling yet intimate saga continues to move, provoke and entrance viewers today. [+]
In 1879, Jo Forsyte(Kenneth More) initiates the first rift in the Forsyte clan by leaving his wife to live illicitly with Helene (Lana Morris), who was governess to his daughter. Jo's cousin Soames (Eric Porter) sets his mind to marry Irene (Nyree Dawn Porter), who accepts him only after many refusals. These and other decisions made in the Victorian age will shape the family's destiny for decades to come.

Review Roots - The Next Generations / Warner Home Video:

Roots rocked the cultural landscape in the late '70s, creating a new wave of awareness of black history. That wave opened the door for its sequel, Roots: The Next Generations, even more of a star-studded event than the original, with stars like Olivia de Havilland, Henry Fonda, Marlon Brando, and James Earl Jones eager to partake in the tale. The sequel follows the rest of the saga of the family of author Alex Haley, from where Roots ended at the Civil War, up to the 1970s when Haley was researching and writing his earth-shattering family story. While nothing can rival the power of the original Roots' unflinching look at the slave trade and slave life in the early years of this country, the sequel is still full of rich African American history, from Reconstruction, to Jim Crow, to the civil rights movement and the early rumblings of black power. Fonda and de Havilland are respectable in their period-piece roles, but the real power of this sequel is in the more immediate concerns of Haley and his own experience of prejudice while building a stellar reputation as a writer and journalist in the '60s and '70s. One of the most unsettling scenes takes place then, when Haley interviews the head of the American Nazi Party, played with chilling diffidence by Brando. (Brando won an Emmy for this performance. ) Haley is also challenged by his fractious interview with Malcolm X (a gripping Al Freeman Jr. ). Jones launches his acting career playing Haley with nuance and heart, but with a humanizing set of his own demons. [+]
The four-disc set includes all seven episodes plus a compelling documentary, Roots: The Next Generations-The Legacy Continues, with interviews with Jones, costar and episode director Georg Stanford Brown and a still starry-eyed David L. Wolper, who understands the cultural impact of the two miniseries he helped bring to the screen. -A. T. Hurley Could there be a worthy follow-up to the most-watched miniseries ever? "We felt the other did so well," Alex Haley said, "that we should just let it hang there. " But Haley began carrying around a tape recorder, dictating more of his family's tales as they came to his memory. Those remembrances filled a 1,000-page transcript: raw material for Roots: The Next Generations. Winner of the Emmy for Best Limited Series, this landmark continuation of a landmark event - with 53 stars and 235 speaking parts - "is in many respects a superior achievement," Newsweek said in comparing this to Roots. Twenty-five years later, it has lost none of its dramatic and emotional power to make us confront history and examine ourselves. One man's family remains everyone's!.

Review Paramount / Complete Adventures of Indiana Jones (3pc) Release date: 1999-10-26
Run time: 361 min.
Creator: Harrison Ford
Price: $24.98

Review Complete Adventures of Indiana Jones (3pc) / Paramount:

As with Star Wars, the George Lucas-produced Indiana Jones trilogy was not just a plaything for kids but an act of nostalgic affection toward a lost phenomenon: the cliffhanging movie serials of the past. Episodic in structure and with fate hanging in the balance about every 10 minutes, the Jones features tapped into Lucas's extremely profitable Star Wars formula of modernizing the look and feel of an old, but popular, story model. Steven Spielberg directed all three films, which are set in the late 1930s and early '40s: the comic book-like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the spooky, Gunga Din-inspired Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and the cautious but entertaining Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Fans and critics disagree over the order of preference, some even finding the middle movie nearly repugnant in its violence. (Pro-Temple of Doom people, on the other hand, believe that film to be the most disarmingly creative and emotionally effective of the trio. ) One thing's for sure: Harrison Ford's swaggering, two-fisted, self-effacing performance worked like a charm, and the art of cracking bullwhips was probably never quite the iconic activity it soon became after Raiders. Supporting players and costars were very much a part of the series, too-Karen Allen, Sean Connery (as Indy's dad), Kate Capshaw, Ke Huy Quan, Amrish Puri, Denholm Elliot, River Phoenix, and John Rhys-Davies among them. Years have passed since the last film (another is supposedly in the works), but emerging film buffs can have the same fun their predecessors did picking out numerous references to Hollywood classics and B-movies of the past. -Tom Keogh.
