Review The Hand Behind the Mouse - The Ub Iwerks Story / Walt Disney Video:

"The Hand Behind the Mouse" is the story of the man Walt Disney called "the greatest animator in the world. " There's not a person in the world who wouldn't recognize Mickey Mouse. But until now, not many knew the man who originally gave shape, movement and personality to the world's most beloved icon. "The Hand Behind the Mouse: The Ub Iwerks Story" takes you behind the scenes to meet Walt Disney's best friend and chief animator. Called a modern day "Da Vinci," a technical genius who brought the unimaginable to the screen, Ub's triumphs reign among the greatest of success stories. This documentary traces the exciting and challenging path he led in shaping the film and animation industry into what it is today. Narrated by Kelsey Grammer and written, directed and produced Ub Iwerk's granddaughter Leslie Iwerks, "The Hand Behind the Mouse: The Ub Iwerks Story" includes never before seen archival footage, previously censored cartoon clips from the 1920's and '30s and interviews with Roy Disney, director John Lasseter ("Toy Story," "A Bug's Life"), veteran Disney animators, actress Tippi Hedren ("The Birds"), film historian Leonard Maltin and more. Also includes two Ub Iwerks-animated Mickey Mouse cartoons, "Plane Crazy," Mickey's first cartoon and "Steamboat Willie," the first synchronized sound cartoon. This version is the unedited, full-length documentary (90 min. runtime). [+]
An edited, 44-minute version of this documentary aired on Bravo. In this 1999 documentary, Leslie Iwerks offers viewers a look at the work of her grandfather, one of the unsung giants of animation and film technology. Ub Iwerks (1901-1971) was a teenager in Kansas City when he and his friend Walt Disney taught themselves animation. In 1928, Iwerks designed Mickey Mouse's physical appearance and animated the first three Mickey shorts almost single-handedly. He left Disney in 1930 to start his own studio, but his cartoons failed to attract audiences. In 1940, he returned to the Disney Studio, where he won Oscars for his work on optical printing and traveling-matte technology. He also revolutionized the animation process by modifying a Xerox machine to print the animators' drawings directly onto cels. Leslie Iwerks has assembled an impressive array of photographs, film clips, and interviews, including young Walt and Ub clowning for the camera in the '20s. But the viewer feels closest to the artist when his loose, vivid drawings of Mickey, Oswald Rabbit, and other characters are on screen. Hand falters when the filmmaker suggests the Hays Code and a shift in national mood were responsible for the failure of the Iwerks studio. Ub Iwerks was one of the great animators of the silent and early sound eras, but he was not an effective director. If the public failed to respond to his Flip the Frog and Willie Whopper characters, it was because they never developed real personalities, a weakness the reissues of the shorts confirms. Suitable for all ages, this 90-minute documentary is often cut in half when it plays on TV. -Charles Solomon.

Review The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh:

Disney's 1977 The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh may be the last word on (animated) Pooh because it so faithfully honors the first word on Pooh, penned in the 1920s by British storyteller A. A. Milne. Gently paced, subtly humorous, and blessedly understated, this adaptation reflects Walt Disney's original vision to develop the beloved British bear for a wider audience. The film is essentially a collection of the original Pooh shorts, "The Honey Tree," "The Blustery Day," and "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too. " These storybooks are presented in seamless "chapters," narrated by the timeless Sebastian Cabot. The familiar musical score and original voices of Sterling Holloway as Pooh, and Paul Winchell as Tigger, cap this enchanting keepsake. (Ages 2 and up). -Lynn Gibson.

Review The Thirteenth Year / Walt Disney Video:

A fisherman chases a mermaid, she "temporarily" stows her newborn on a boat, the owners find the baby, and thus begins young Cody's life on land. Fast-forward to the kid's 13th birthday when he starts growing scales and sparking electricity. (Of course, that would make it the 14th year, but who's counting?) His swim-team stardom is threatened, his girlfriend is puzzled, and the nerdy brainiac who can't swim turns out to be his best ally. This tale of a popular dude who turns into a mer-boy and finds his undersea self-and biological mother-began life as a Disney Channel movie and stars Dave Coulier (TV's Full House) as the adoptive dad. Don't look for deep lessons during this 88-minute lark; it's strictly for fun. (Ages 5 and older) -Kimberly Heinrichs.

Review Big Red (Widescreen Edition) / Starz / Anchor Bay:

Disney has always done right by the classic "boy and his dog" adventure, and Big Red, adapted from the popular novel by Jim Kjelgarrd, is no exception. Wealthy sportsman Walter Pidgeon buys a beautiful Irish setter to turn into a champion show dog and hires spunky young Gilles Payant, a French-speaking country boy teaching himself English, to care for the dog. But boys will be boys and as Gilles and the setter run through forests, chasing critters and rolling down hills, Red loses all interest in show business discipline as he bonds with the kid. Pidgeon makes a gentle and understanding paternal father figure who grows to love the uneducated but hard-working lad, who grows from impulsive adolescent to courageous young man, but apart from a shattering accident that leaves Red near death, there's little real excitement to the lolling tale. Disney house director Norman Tokar proves more adept in filming the stately wilderness landscape than developing the dramatic possibilities of the script, but there's a charm to the innocent scenes of the boy and his dog at play in the great outdoors. It's a nostalgic world of blue skies, green meadows, rushing rivers of blue and white water, and mountain peaks shooting into the sky. What more could a boy and his dog ask for? -Sean Axmaker.

Review Model Behavior:

Disney's Model Behavior demands a lot of most viewers. First there's the premise-that a typical tortured teenager could pull off trading places with a hot teen supermodel for a week based solely on a passing resemblance. And then there are the characters. Who's going to buy Party of Five's exceptionally pretty Maggie Lawson as class geek Alex Burrows, whose best friend lovingly describes her as a fellow dweebette? Or N Sync's Justin Timberlake as Jason Sharp, a real sweetheart of a guy who's trying to scrape together dough for grad school as the fashion industry's globetrotting pretty boy of the moment? Tweens, of course. While everybody else is putting his wallet away, kids from 8 to 13-Timberlake's gazillion girl groupies, especially-will be transfixed. This is completely wholesome stuff-Alex's parents are picture-perfect, family-values-promoting suburbanites, and even Kathie Lee Gifford, overbearing stage mom to supermodel Janine Adams (Lawson, with looser, swingier hair and no glasses), shows a softer, more considerate side by film's end. So do the scheming life swappers (surprise, surprise), who, after setting in motion a tsunami of confusion and heartbreak, work the grass-is-greener way of thinking out of their systems. The message-be yourself-is one that just might take with the sort of sweet, impressionable youths who can suspend disbelief long enough to lose themselves in this movie. -Tammy La Gorce.
