Review The Tuskegee Airmen:

This true story of the black flyers who broke the color barrier in the U. S. Air Force during World War II is a well-intentioned film highlighted by an excellent cast. Proud, solemn, Iowa-born Laurence Fishburne and city-kid hipster Cuba Gooding Jr. are among the hopefuls who meet en route to Tuskegee Air Force Base, where they are among the recruits for an "experimental" program to "prove" the abilities of the black man in the U. S. armed services. Fighting prejudice from racist officers and government officials and held to a consistently higher level of performance than their white counterparts, these men prove themselves in training and in combat, many of them dying for their country in the process. Andre Braugher costars as a West Point graduate who takes charge of the unit in Africa and in Italy (where it's christened the 332nd). The film is rousing, if slow starting and episodic, but it's periodically grounded by a host of war movie clichés, notably the calculated demise of practically every trainee introduced in the opening scenes (ironic given the 332nd's real-life combat record-high casualties for the enemy, low casualties among themselves, and no losses among the bombers they escorted). [+]
Ultimately the Emmy-nominated performances by moral backbone Fishburne and the dedicated Braugher and the energy and cocky confidence of Gooding give their battles both on and off the battlefield the sweet taste of victory. -Sean Axmaker.

Review Take the Money and Run:

Woody Allen's feature-film debut, Take the Money and Run, a mockumentary that combines sight gags, sketchlike scenes, and standup jokes at rat-a-tat speed, looks positively primitive compared to his mature work. Primitive, but awfully funny. Allen plays Virgil Starkwell, a music-loving nebbish who turns to a life of crime at an early age and, undaunted by his utter and complete failure to pull off a single successful robbery, continues his unbroken spree of bungled heists and prison breaks even after he marries and raises a family. Narrator Jackson Beck, whose stentorian voice of authority makes a perfect foil for Starkwell's absurd exploits, lobs one droll quip after another with deadpan seriousness. Though spotty, Allen tosses so many jokes into the mix that it hardly matters and when they hit they are often hilarious: the chain gang posing as cousins to their old-woman hostage ("We're very close," Virgil explains to a dim cop), arguing with a dotty movie director who is supposed to be their cover for a bank robbery, Virgil's escape attempt with a bar of soap. Allen spoofs decades of crime films, everything from I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang to Bonnie and Clyde, but you don't have to know the movies to enjoy this goofy, sometimes clumsy, but quite clever comedy. -Sean Axmaker.

Review Robinson Crusoe:

Pierce Brosnan stars in a new movie version of the classic adventure tale Robinson Crusoe. After killing a friend in a duel, Crusoe flees his native Scotland and takes to the high seas. A storm casts him ashore on an island in the Indian Ocean, where he builds himself a home out of bamboo and goes a little crazy from solitude-until he finds a footprint in the sand that isn't his. The relationship between Crusoe and Friday, a native from a neighboring island, gets a more contemporary (less colonial) interpretation than in the original story; the result is quite enjoyable. Brosnan is particularly good at depicting Crusoe's borderline madness from isolation, and William Takaku gives Friday both dignity and intelligence. The cinematography of the island is gorgeous. -Bret Fetzer.
