Review Amazon Women on the Moon:Contrary to popular rumor, this 1987 collection of comedy skits is not about a group of female employees from Amazon. com on a mission to the lunar surface. It's a series of unrelated spoofs and sketches designed to resemble an aimless night of TV channel-surfing, and the satirical targets include grade-Z science fiction films of the 1950s, sex films of the 1930s, hospital soap operas, and Playboy video centerfolds. There's a charity drive in which legendary bluesman B. B. King pleas for donations to help "Blacks Without Soul," and Ed Begley Jr. thinks he's the son of the Invisible Man, which would be fine if he weren't as visible as everyone else. The various sketches feature an all-star cast including Rosanna Arquette, Griffin Dunne, Carrie Fisher, Michelle Pfeiffer, the late Phil Hartman in an early role, and many others. It's strictly hit-or-miss, and many of the sketches fall flat, especially since the subjects being spoofed (the title sketch is a send-up of the actual 1954 movie Cat Women on the Moon) are funny enough without being satirized. Even though Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide describes most of the sketches as "astonishingly unfunny," this can be a very amusing movie if you're in the mood for a no-brainer with a lot of familiar Hollywood faces. Review Duel:This is the TV movie that put Steven Spielberg on the map, shortly before he made The Sugarland Express. Working from a script by Richard Matheson, the film stars Dennis Weaver as a mild-mannered traveling salesman who unintentionally angers the driver of a semi truck. Suddenly, the truck is not only riding his tail but trying to run him off the road. No matter what he does (pulling over, stopping at a diner, calling the cops), he can't get rid of it. Spielberg makes the wise decision of never showing the driver, even as he cranks the voltage on the film's suspense elements. As a result, the truck itself takes on an air of satanic menace-even a personality of sorts-as it seems to hunt its human prey. Spielberg made a lot out of a little, suggesting just how skilled a storyteller he would become. -Marshall Fine.

Review All Over Me:This gritty 1997 film marks the merging of several budding talents: sisters Sylvia and Alex Sichel, who serve as writer and director, and actors Alison Folland (To Die For), Tara Subkoff, and Murmurs singer Leisha Hailey. The idea behind the movie was the Sichels' awe at ever having survived being teenage girls in the big city. All Over Me is about Claude (Folland) a shy, overweight teen who works in a pizza parlor after school and is secretly in love with her best friend Ellen (Subkoff). But Ellen is far ahead of Claude in development. She has an older boyfriend, and she harbors a bad case of destructive self-loathing that erupts frequently and with a fury. But All Over Me isn't just a teenage cautionary or coming-out tale. It's as much a story of New York and its unbearably long, hot summers as it is the downtown music scene or teenage dreams and struggles with adult issues. More than that, it's a well-made film that has its own rhythm, working slowly to give us insight into the girls' natures. It succeeds admirably in taking us back to that age when everything seemed possible despite the dangers of the city closing in. Growing up has never felt as close to home or as scarily realistic. [+]

Review The Saragossa Manuscript (Rekopis znaleziony w Saragossie):The legend says that "The Saragossa Manuscript", the most famous work of Count Jan Potocki (scholar, magnate, traveller, soldier and poet; 1761-1815) was written as a series of stories during the long illness of Potocki's wife, whom he tried to amuse. This masterpiece of composition was written in French and published in France in 1813. It ranks as one of the most interesting literary works of the European enlightenment. Also the film based on that famous novel became an international hit, considered by many film critics to be one of the most important films in post-war cinema. This extremely witty story pictures the most fantastic, fascinating and amusing adventures of a young captain of the Walloon guards, under the King of Spain, during his travels through Spain. This 19th century Don Jaun must pass numerous tests to prove his courage, honesty, and honor in order to become a descendent of the powerful Mauretanian family. Review Austeria:On the first day of WWI, a group of Jews flee from the Cossak Army in Polish Galicia and find themselves trapped overnight in a border inn. Relationships develop, love affairs are snatched, the religious pray. Full of warmth and vitality, the film captures the Jewish sense of humor which seems, uniquely, to draw inspiration from disaster. English subtitles. Cast/Obsada: Franciszek Pieczka, Wojciech Pszoniak, Jan Szurmiej. By Jerzy Kawalerowicz. 1982, color. 102 mins.
