Review Battle Athletes - Beginning - On Your Mark / Geneon [Pioneer]:

The adventures of teenage girl athletes have been standard fare in manga since the late '60s, with anime following. Battle Athletes is based on a video game set in the year 4999. Promising girls are sent to a special satellite to train to compete for the coveted title of "Cosmic Beauty," a contest that grew out of the settlement of an interplanetary war 1,000 years earlier. The daughter of a former winner, 16-year-old Akari Kanzaki arrives at the satellite hoping to match her mother's performance. "Chronicle Beginning" sets up Akari and the major supporting characters. Akari is assigned to a team with Kris, a confident, spiritual girl from a back-to-nature commune on the moon, and the terminally shy and whiny Anna. Tanya, an ebullient, food-obsessed African girl, lends comic relief and the icy Mylandah supplies heavy-handed villainy. Training begins in earnest in "Oath Entrant," as the girls compete in zero gravity lacrosse matches: Kris plays skillfully, Mylandah cheats, Tanya hollers, Anna snivels. Akari, who's new to the game, is frustrated by her poor showing but eventually learns the importance of teamwork, patience, and friendship. These lessons mix rah-rah innocence with cutthroat competitiveness and suggestions of lesbianism. [+]
Despite the presence of genial headmaster Grant Oldman, the girls get very little formal training. They compete against each other and the high-tech machinery, but the animation is too limited to convey running and the other athletic feats convincingly. -Charles Solomon.

The romantic comedy Hand Maid May feels like pieces of Oh My Goddess, Tenchi Muyo, El Hazard, and Steel Angel Kurumi cobbled together. The premise is no more improbable, the characters no sillier, the holes in the plot no more egregious than in those comedies, but the elements never quite gel, and the show plays like a rerun, even on the first viewing. Kazuya is a computer nerd, trying to create a squid version of the famous robot-cat Doraemon. When a virus zaps his system, he inadvertently orders a Hyperdoll-a girl one-sixth normal size. May tries to perform a maid's duties despite her diminutive stature, and the inevitable mismatched attraction arises. When Kazuya can't pay the $1. 45 million bill, May is repossessed by the Cyberdyne Corp. But a kindly robot offers to provide him with a replacement-free of charge. A full-sized version of May appears and they pick up where they left off. But Kazuya's kindness attracts other beautiful Hyperdolls. [+]
The predictable contretemps include the jealousy of Nanbara, Kazuya's self-proclaimed best friend and worst enemy. Things take a weird turn when Kazuya's and Nanbara's descendants arrive from the future and begin messing with the story line. The low-key romance is juxtaposed with jiggle shots and risqué jokes. The original series ran 10 episodes-a pointless 11th OAV has been added-and the episodes stretched over three discs. The fourth contains supplemental material. Pa-Bo Ayanokoji believes she's a typical high school girl who likes to hang out with her friends. Her world is shattered when the mysterious warrior Yakumo reveals she is not a human girl, but Pai, the last surviving Sanjiyan or holy demon. The rest of the Sanjiyans were exterminated 300 years ago when their king, Kaiyanwang, turned to evil. Now he is about to rise again, and his servants are trying to kill Pai, who can challenge him. Pai's memories of her past life in the blessed realm of Kunlun have been blocked by a spell; Yakumo takes her to Tibet for help breaking it. Along the way, he fights assorted villains led by the sniggering Choukai. Pai and Yakumo cross the barrier to Kunlun with the aid of treasure hunter Jake Macdonald and some Tibetan monks. In Kunlun, they battle Choukai and Kaiyanwang's chief henchman, Benares. The drawn-out climax proves disappointing. Pai and her friends never confront Kaiyanwang, just his servants (which probably means sequels are in the offing). [+]
Yakumo repeatedly gets beaten to a bloody pulp but magically heals himself. Typical of the heroes in "magical girl" series, he remains unshakably devoted to the simple and whiny Pai. Rated 16 and up for considerable violence, minor profanity, and nudity. -Charles Solomon Sanjiyan has been sealed away and Pai now believes that she has always been human. If Yakumo, her immortal partner, ever wants to regain his humanity, he needs to awaken Pai's memory and prevent an ancient evil from being revived. Not an easy task when all of the other demons of the world wish her to remain clueless.
