Review Cardcaptor Sakura - Winter Wonderland (Vol. 9) / Geneon Entertainment:The episodes that mark the end of the first season of this charming series have an ominous tone. Sakura is haunted by a recurring dream in which she confronts a mysterious long-haired woman atop Tokyo Tower: is it her math teacher, Ms. Mizuki? The relations between the characters shift and tensions grow: Sakura's older brother Toya clearly dislikes Shaoran Li, who is jealous of Sakura's friendship with Yuki. Sakura and Shaoran have to work together to defeat the increasingly powerful Clow Cards, and an attraction may be growing between them. The obstreperous Meilin, who clings to Shaoran as if he were magnetized, is jealous of Sakura. Kero worries about these developments, but he also realizes that as Sakura captures more of the enchanted Cards, he's regaining his magical powers-which he demonstrates in Wonderful Christmas. In part 2, "Birth of a Star" Kyosuke must convince Hayakawa not to spill the beans, and make sure that Madoka gets to the stage on time. It's a good thing he has a knack for teleportation.

Review Battle Athletes - Beginning - On Your Mark / Geneon [Pioneer]:The adventures of teenage girl athletes have been standard fare in manga since the late '60s, with anime following. Battle Athletes is based on a video game set in the year 4999. Promising girls are sent to a special satellite to train to compete for the coveted title of "Cosmic Beauty," a contest that grew out of the settlement of an interplanetary war 1,000 years earlier. The daughter of a former winner, 16-year-old Akari Kanzaki arrives at the satellite hoping to match her mother's performance. "Chronicle Beginning" sets up Akari and the major supporting characters. Akari is assigned to a team with Kris, a confident, spiritual girl from a back-to-nature commune on the moon, and the terminally shy and whiny Anna. Tanya, an ebullient, food-obsessed African girl, lends comic relief and the icy Mylandah supplies heavy-handed villainy. Training begins in earnest in "Oath Entrant," as the girls compete in zero gravity lacrosse matches: Kris plays skillfully, Mylandah cheats, Tanya hollers, Anna snivels. Akari, who's new to the game, is frustrated by her poor showing but eventually learns the importance of teamwork, patience, and friendship. These lessons mix rah-rah innocence with cutthroat competitiveness and suggestions of lesbianism. [+]Despite the presence of genial headmaster Grant Oldman, the girls get very little formal training. They compete against each other and the high-tech machinery, but the animation is too limited to convey running and the other athletic feats convincingly. -Charles Solomon.

Review Macross Plus:A recut version of the four-part OAV (1994), the Macross Plus movie plays like a mixture of Top Gun, Gundam Wing, and Key the Metal Idol. It's 2040 on the planet Eden: former high school rivals Isamu Dyson and half-human/half-Zentraedi Guld Goa Bowman have become rival mecha test pilots. They're also still competing for the affection of Myung Lone, the producer for cybernetic singing sensation Sharon Apple. When an illegal "bio-neural" chip is implanted into the computer that generates Sharon, she becomes sentient, attacking Myung and attempting to lure Isamu to his death. Wild and crazy Isamu and serious Guld defeat the plot with their hotshot piloting. The film boasts elaborate computer-animated special effects and exceptionally well choreographed aerial battles, but director Shoji Kawamori correctly summed up Macross Plus as "a serious story with a silly plot.
