Review Clouded Yellow / Homevision:

This action-packed chase film is ranked with Hitchcock's great British thrillers. When an ex-spy takes a low-profile job in the country, he finds that dangerous work continues to pursue him. He becomes embroiled in a murder mystery and goes "underground" with a beautiful suspect. The fugitives stay one step ahead of the police until the breathless climax.

Review Hullabaloo 1-4 / Mpi Home Video:

The short-lived (1965-66) Shindig! knockoff Hullabaloo epitomizes the often-faltering steps U. S. network television made to keep up with the explosion of rock & roll culture in the wake of Beatlemania. Sometimes inspired, sometimes silly (definitely the latter with hosts and guests like Jerry Lewis, Michael Landon, Freddie and the Dreamers, and Vikki Carr), seven episodes plus bonus performances fill this DVD compilation of previous VHS releases. Over its four and a half hours, in black-and-white and color, true rockers ranging from Chuck Berry, the Lovin' Spoonful, Martha and the Vandellas, and the Animals slam into the slightly clueless (Chad & Jill) and the utterly hopeless (Joanie Sommers, Frankie Avalon, the aforementioned Freddie). Moments of irrepressible pop genius (Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar") and sheer drama (Dionne Warwick's "Message to Michael") make this a must, though. Throw in a bit of apparent collusion between an NBC director and Byrd Roger McGuinn as he aims the "Your sons and daughters are beyond your command" verse of "The Times They Are A-Changin'" in extreme close-up to millions of American parents, and Hullabaloo's ultimate success is demonstrated. -Rickey Wright.

Review Smilin Through (1932) / MGM (Warner):

A nominee for the 1932 Best Picture Oscar, Smilin' Through features Leslie Howard in the role of an embittered man whose fiancée was murdered on their wedding day by a jealous lover, and Frederic March as the lovestruck son of the killer-who will pay dearly for his father's misdeed. The film has a terrific cast, including Norma Shearer in a leading role. Quite memorable as one of the best heartbreakers (tearjerkers, if you like) out of 1930s Hollywood, the story finds Howard's character living alone for three decades following the death of his beloved (Shearer). An unhappy man, he becomes guardian to his niece (Shearer again), the spitting image of his almost-wife. When she falls in love with the son of the killer (both men played by March), who naturally looks like Howard's nemesis, sparks fly and tragedy ensues. Directed by Sidney Franklin, this is a terrific showcase for all three actors, and a moving drama about the burden of guilt and vengeance. -Tom Keogh.

Review Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy:

After 15 years of hit movies for Universal Studios, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello left the studio in the twilight of their partnership with the last of their monster comedies. Decked out in desert safari gear, the boys go looking for a job with an Egyptologist and wind up in the middle of a conspiracy concerning the murdered professor, an ancient mummy, and a magical medallion that, true to form, bumbling Costello manages to eat for dinner. Marie Windsor, the boss lady of a gang of treasure hunting crooks, dresses in a harem outfit to vamp for our chubby little hero, and the eternally stiff Richard Deacon hilariously plays the leader of an Egyptian mummy cult like a high school principal decked out for Halloween. Directed by longtime collaborator Charles Lamont, it's a typical Abbott and Costello farce with disappearing corpses, mistaken identities, and wacky word plays ("Take your pick" riffs on "Who's on first" with garden tools). While not as clever or spirited as their original monster mash Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, the vaudeville veterans are still masters of the double take and fast-talk patter, and the picture climaxes with a screwball chase that involves not one, not two, but three mummies skittering through the phoniest looking pyramid this side of community theater. You were expecting realism? The boys appeared together once more on film, in Dance with Me, Henry, and then split up. -Sean Axmaker.
