Review The Ipcress File / Starz / Anchor Bay:In the spy-crazed film world of the 1960s, Len Deighton's antihero Harry Palmer burst onto the scene as an antidote to the James Bond films. Here was a British spy who had a working-class accent and horn-rimmed glasses and above all really didn't want to be a spy in the first place. As portrayed by Michael Caine, Palmer was the perfect antithesis to Sean Connery's 007. Unlike that of his globetrotting spy cousin, Palmer's beat is cold, rainy, dreary London, where he spends his days and nights in unheated flats spying on subversives. He does charm one lady, but she's no Pussy Galore, just a civil servant he works with, sent to keep an eye on him. Eventually he's assigned to get to the bottom of the kidnapping and subsequent "brain draining" of a nuclear physicist, all the while being reminded by his superiors that it's this or prison. Things begin to get pretty hairy for Harry. Produced by Harry Saltzman in his spare time between Bond movies, the film also features a haunting score by another Bond veteran, composer John Barry. -Kristian St. Clair.

Review A Man in our House / AFD:Based on the famous novel by Ihsan Abdel Qoddous, this 1961 classic is set prior to the 1952 revolution and stars the legendary Omar Sharif in one of his most memorable roles. Sharif plays Ibrahim, a member of the underground resistance who seeks refuge from the so-called "political police" by taking shelter in the home of a civil servant and his family. Directed by Henri Barakat, this film offers a vivid depiction of the Egyptian resistance to the British occupation and features some of Egypt's finest filmmaking talents.

Review The Invincible Iron Man - The Death of Tony Stark & The Crimson Dynamo / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:This installment of Marvel Comics cartoons features the invincible Iron Man. In The Death of Tony Stark, a laser beam emitted from a mysterious satellite orbiting the Earth destroys the home of wealthy industrialist Tony Stark. Iron Man's alter ego has obviously dodged the strike but cannot disprove the rumor that Stark is dead until he confronts the culprit, the Mandarin. In The Crimson Dynamo, Iron Man faces Soviet electrical genius Professor Vanko, who has designed his own suit of crimson armor in order to defeat Iron Man as the first step to destroying the ultimate capitalist, Stark Enterprises. These stories, rather dated in their cold-war depiction of the Chinese and the Soviets, are each divided into three six-minute serial-type segments. The animation is minimal, restricted mostly to camera zooms and moving limbs and mouths, punctuated by Batman-style sound effects ("Wham!"). Other heroes in this series include Sub-Mariner, Spider-Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor. -David Horiuchi.
