Review Force of Arms / Warner Home Video:

Film adaptation of Hemingway's novel 'A Farewell to Arms' set during World War II. The Germans have successfully stopped the Americans from making it any further into the Italian mountains. The battles have reduced Joe Peterson's platoon to a mere shell of it's former self. Joe is given leave to recuperate in Naples where he meets WAC Lieutenant Eleanor MacKay. A romance develops, even as Joe has to travel back and forth to the front lines. The two struggle with the reality that each battle may be his last.

Review A Tree Grows in Brooklyn / 20th Century Fox:

Elia Kazan made his directorial debut with this adaptation of Betty Smith's novel about a bright, young girl growing up in turn-of-the-century Brooklyn, trying to rise above her tenement existence. Sensitively filmed by Kazan, and graced with wonderful performances by James Dunn as the wistful, alcoholic father and Dorothy McGuire as a strong-willed mother. Peggy Ann Garner won a special Oscar for her performance. -Tom Keogh.

Review The Dick Van Dyke Show - Season One Box Set / Image Entertainment:

Before The Dick Van Dyke Show, suburbia was never portrayed on television as a haven of sophistication. We never followed Ozzie Nelson to work. And we never, ever fantasized what Ward and June Cleaver did behind closed doors. But Your Show of Shows veteran Carl Reiner's groundbreaking series broke the staid, sitcom mold. Just consider Mary Tyler Moore's Laura Petrie, the ravishing wife of Dick Van Dyke's comedy writer, Rob Petrie. "I'm just a housewife," she proclaims in the episode "To Tell or Not to Tell," just before breaking into an incendiary bossa nova in the Petrie living room. In "The Return of Happy Spangler," she is jokingly identified as Jackie Kennedy. But the comparison is apt. She's got style (those capri pants scandalized the show's sponsors!); she's got grace. The Dick Van Dyke Show boasts a peerless ensemble, gold-standard writing, and characters who have become icons. [+]
How many comedy writers were inspired to get into the business by watching Rob and his staff, man-hungry Sally Rogers (Rose Marie) and old school "human joke machine" Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam), brainstorm sketches for tyrannical boss Alan Brady (much discussed, and much feared, but never seen in season 1)? Much of the comedy in the first season springs from Rob juggling his glamorous career with his harried home life. In the first episode, he compels his over-protective wife to attend a party at Alan Brady's, though she is worried son Ritchie (Larry Matthews) is sick ("He turned down his cupcake"). In "Washington vs. the Bunny," Rob must choose between a business trip and seeing Ritchie in a school play. In another episode, Rob forgets "Forty-Four Tickets" he had promised to the P. T. A. But back to Laura (and about time!). As the season unfolds, Moore comes into her own as a gifted comedienne, and she takes her stock character to dizzy new heights, as witness "My Blonde-Haired Brunette" and the classic "The Curious Thing About Women," the one with the inflatable boat. A pop culture benchmark, The Dick Van Dyke Show is must-own television. -Donald Liebenson.

Review Bread, Love and Dreams (1954-Italy):

With VITTORIO DE SICA, GINA LOLLOBRIGIDA, MARISA MERLINI, ROBERTO RISSO. "Performances Under the Supervision of VITTORIO DE SICA. " Despite its all-encompassing title, the primary focus of this simple, hearty comedy is love and the art of seduction. De Sica, one of ltalys most respected filmmakers who also enjoyed a career in front of the camera, stars as The Marshal: a dapper, middle-aged bachelor whos the new chief of a six-man police unit in a small, picturesque mountain village. Not much happens here; in fact, the town residents have so little to do that theyve become obsessed with gossiping and becoming involved in each others business. So theres much ado when their new top cop commences to flirt with, and then ardently pursue, the towns sexiest - and most tempestuous and devilish young maiden, who is most appropriately known as "Frisky. " The Marshal must be ever so careful as he does so, because of his age and position in the community. De Sica plays him masterfully, in a performance that is first a series of subtle, artfully maneuvered glances, smiles and raised eyebrows, then a caricature of a desperate, longing suitor. Hes matched by Lollobrigida, a movie goddess who was capable of offering carefully considered, well-defined characterizations. Her "Frisky" is more than just a cardboard sex object. [+]
La Lollo offers a piercing performance as she mimics the various townsmen who paw at her and deflects the Marshals passes, reminding one and all with her body language that she, and not the Marshal, or any man, is the one with the true power when it comes to matters of the heart. The stars are surrounded by a fine supporting cast, notably Roberto Risso as the shy young policeman who happens to be the object of Friskys affection and Marisa Merlini as a midwife who, it would seem, is a more appropriate romantic partner for the Marshal. Dubbed in English. 91 minutes.

Review Sitting Pretty / Fox Home Entertainment:

Clifton Webb brings the imperious fussiness that made him a prissy film noir icon in such films as Laura and The Dark Corner to the role of Lynn Belvedere, the self-proclaimed genius who takes a position nannying a trio of bratty boys. This professed child-hating bachelor proves to be a godsend for flustered parents Maureen O'Hara and Robert Young. Within days his unconventional mix of child psychology and strict discipline tames the three rambunctious boys-faced with an infant who insists on spattering him with oatmeal, he simply dumps the bowl on the tyke's head. The trouble in paradise begins when a snoopy neighbor spreads gossip about an affair between Belvedere and the mother of the house, which sends hot-headed Dad into a tizzy, but just as things look their darkest Belvedere turns the tables on the neighborhood when the real reason of his suburban relocation is revealed. Director Walter Lang underplays his hand so much that the film takes on all the style of a 1950s TV sitcom, but his fine direction of performers brings out the humor of this middle-class satire with warmth and wit. Ultimately, however, the film belongs to Webb, whose witheringly snide insults and cutting comments roll off his tongue with comic effortlessness. He proved so popular that he starred in a pair of sequels: Mr. Belvedere Goes to College and Mr. Belvedere Rings the Bell. -Sean Axmaker.

Review Under Capricorn / Vid America:

With the long-take experiment of Rope still fresh in his mind, Alfred Hitchcock turned his attention to romantic melodrama: Under Capricorn, a novel of 1830s Australia. Having little of the usual suspense to rely on, Hitchcock used the elegant long-take method to draw out Ingrid Bergman's harrowing performance. As a fallen aristocrat who married a former stable boy (Joseph Cotten) and moved Down Under, Bergman gives a fine portrayal of a woman hemmed in by a sour marriage and a guilty secret. The actress also felt hemmed in by Hitch's elaborate camera movements; she hated them. This expensive picture flopped on its first release, but it has a hypnotic flow despite a tendency toward talkiness. Hitchcock fans will recognize, beyond the details of plot, a couple of the director's key motifs: the jaundiced view of marriage, and the anxieties underlying social status. And, of course, the worship of an actress. -Robert Horton.
