Review The Rounders / MGM (Warner):Burt Kennedy wrote several of the finest Westerns ever for director Budd Boetticher in the late '50s-marvels of austere, subtle storytelling. Yet on his own, writer-director Kennedy tended to very broad comedy-Westerns. The Rounders, based on a novel by Max Evans, falls somewhere between Support Your Local Sheriff (high) and Dirty Dingus Magee (low). Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda play two bronc busters in the pickup-driving West who, by their own admission, "ain't exactly the smartest cowboys that ever lived. " Somehow they always end up owing rancher Jim Ed Love (Chill Wills) one more year of indentured servitude. The year we observe is dominated by a purely diabolical roan and capped by a randy brush with two showgirls (Sue Ane Langdon and Hope Holiday) who play "Dumber" to Ford and Fonda's "Dumb. " It's all very amiable and unassuming, but the toot-plunk-whistle-boom soundtrack-to signal "This is the funny part"-is sheer torture. -Richard T. Jameson.

Review Beau Geste / Universal Studios:Gary Cooper plays the oldest of three brothers who join the French Foreign Legion to cover a mysterious theft, and are soon caught up in high adventures. The opening scene in a fort full of corpses sticks in the memory forever, and Brian Donlevy's role as a sadistic sergeant makes a striking impression as well. Director William Wellman (Wings), a veteran pilot of World War I, drew-as he often did-upon the authenticity of his own experiences in battle to give this film a measure of reality. -Tom Keogh.

Review Safety Last / Hbo Home Video:The best-remembered film by the great silent comic Harold Lloyd is still a hair-raiser. The bespectacled Mr. Lloyd plays an earnest young chap who goes to the city to make his fortune, although $15 a week from a department store is the best he can muster. After a string of ingenious visual gags, the movie climaxes with a wild sequence in which Harold, trying to win a prize by drumming up publicity for the store, arranges for an agile friend to climb up the side of the building. Natch, the friend can't do it, so Harold ascends, inch by white-knuckle inch. The stunt is still one of the great coups in movies (this was before rear-projection or digitally erased safety ropes, remember), and Lloyd beautifully wrings every possible complication out of it. That was Lloyd's approach: a simple character, and endless complications. -Robert Horton.

Review Reckless / MGM (Warner):Producer David O. Selznick had dreams of musical stardom for Jean Harlow when he cast her in the melodrama Reckless, based on the tragic life of Broadway singer Libby Holman (called Mona Leslie in the movie). Harlow is charming in the film and does some of her finest dramatic acting, but she's no musical star. She looks uncomfortable lip-synching her songs, and the little bit of hoofing she does is nothing to write home about. As is the case in so many 1930s movies, the film's message is class-related. Mona has two rivals for her affections: humble sports promoter Ned Riley (William Powell) and millionaire playboy Bob Harrison (Franchot Tone). The viewer knows that Mona would be happier with Ned, but she elopes with Bob, dazzled by his yacht and his fancy talk. Little does Mona know that Bob was once engaged to marry his childhood sweetheart, Jo Mercer (a young and lovely Rosalind Russell). Bob soon realizes that he's made a mistake marrying Mona; he doesn't have the guts to stand up for her among his snooty family and friends. What's impressive about this movie is that it doesn't pull any punches-the tragedy here is wrenching and real. [+]
And knowledge of the parallel events in Harlow's own life (her catastrophic marriage to Paul Bern) renders the film even more poignant. -Laura Mirsky.

Review The Brave One / Vci Video:This family favorite, a south-of-the-border variation of the classic boy-and-his dog story, stars Michel Ray as Leonardo, a young Mexican boy who appeals to the president of Mexico to spare his beloved bull from death in the bullfighting ring. Does the bull meet a grisly fate at the hands of a sombrero-topped matador? We're not telling, but charming performances and some gentle tear jerking make The Brave One an agreeable movie for kids. The film is also known for an interesting footnote of Hollywood history: When it won the Academy Award in the now-defunct category of best original story, screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (using the pseudonym "Robert Rich") was unable to accept the Oscar due to the infamous Hollywood blacklist. He officially claimed the award in 1975. -Jeff Shannon.
