Review Zero De Conduite / Homevision:It's hard to believe that this fantastical tale of a schoolboy rebellion was banned in its native France for 12 years following its initial 1933 release (for supposed anti-French sentiment). Perhaps the French authorities were remembering director Jean Vigo's father, a famous French anarchist who died in prison, or just concerned that Vigo was revealing too much of his own unhappy youth spent in boarding schools. They needn't have worried. Zero in Conduct is much more a childhood fantasy than a social critique, focusing on three particularly naughty boys who are constantly being threatened with a "zero in conduct" for their bad behavior. The rebellion in question is no armed revolt but a raucous pillow fight and a few stones thrown from a roof, all to the chant "Down with teachers, down with school. " Filmed in magical black and white by Boris Kaufman-winner of the Academy Award for cinematography in 1954 for On the Waterfront (and brother of filmmakers Mikhail Kaufman and Dziga Vertov)-Zero in Conduct is a film for film lovers. Jean Vigo died in 1935, when he was 29 years old, leaving behind only three films. But his influence, strongly evident here in the surrealism and fascinating early special effects (including a drawing that springs to life on the page), long outlives him. This tender and ferocious elegy to youthfulness has been previously available in unwatchable bootleg versions. Review The Love of Sunya (1927-USA) / Unknown:1927 GLORIA SWANSON, JOHN BOLES. The destiny of a lovely and talented young woman named Sunya Ashling is at stake in this engrossing and heartfelt romantic melodrama. Sunya is offered two seemingly wonderful opportunities. First, she can move to Paris to study voice and eventually become an opera star under the sponsorship of an impresario named Paolo De Salvo. Second, she can marry her beloved, an engineer named Paul Judson who wants her to join him in South America where he will manage a branch of his company. Just as the future seems rosy for Sunya, her father tells her that he is in desperate financial straits and asks her to marry an older man named Goring in order to re-stock the Ashling family coffers. That night, a yogi with fiery eyes comes to the Ashling home. The exotic stranger reveals a crystal ball to Sunya and gives her the chance to see her future with both De Salvo and Goring. The story is filled with surprises, and Gloria Swanson gives a captivating performance as a woman in search of her fate. In addition, there is an exciting introductory sequence set in ancient Egypt. Review Most Dangerous Game / United Home:The Most Dangerous Game is a classic, one of the first talkies to get pictures moving after five very static years following the birth of sound. The plot finds resourceful hero Joel McCrea and heroine Fay Wray being hunted on the island of the insane Zaroff (Leslie Banks). One of the grandfathers of the summer blockbuster, the film's setup has been reworked many times since, notably in John Woo's Hard Target (1993). By modern standards it's technically primitive, though still gripping stuff, complete with the jungle set built as a test run for King Kong (1933) and graced by Max Steiner's prototype of all Hollywood action scores. -Gary S. Review Peanuts Holiday Collection (A Charlie Brown Christmas/A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving/It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown) + Inflatable Chair / CBS Television:Two of the all-time cartoon classics It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) and A Charlie Brown Christmas (a Peabody and Emmy winner from 1965) highlight this three-disc, six-episode set. Although the DVDs contain no extras (good grief!) and could have been combined on a single disc (drat!), the collection looks and sounds wonderful on DVD. The content is the same on the VHS and DVD sets, with two episodes per tape or disc. Accompanying Pumpkin is You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown, a cute spin on politics that has aged very well since its 1972 release. Christmas sports a lackluster sequel of sorts, It's Christmas Time Again, Charlie Brown (1992) that has Sally dwelling on getting (instead of giving), Charlie Brown facing a spending dilemma, and everyone suffering stage fright before the annual school play. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973) also won an Emmy but is not as well known as others; it also suffers from not having the original cast. Snoopy is foremost in helping to put on an impromptu feast (toast and popcorn) as the gang keeps forgetting the true meaning of the holiday. Also on the disc is a better Thanksgiving venue, The Mayflower Voyages (1988), part of the This is America, Charlie Brown series that breathed new life into the franchise. Mostly narrated by Linus, the show traces the Pilgrims' plight and doesn't talk down to youngsters on the hardships they faced. Review Curriculum Kits: Oliver Twist Video & Teacher's / Wgbh Boston:Masterpiece Theater released this six-hour version of Dickens's Oliver Twist in celebration of its 30th anniversary on the air. Host Russell Baker sums up this production of the classic tale well when he warns viewers they are about to embark on a convoluted story full of "thieves, hypocrites, and psychopathic killers"-that there will be lush period costumes and on-location shooting of meticulously breathtaking locations goes without saying. This retelling of the novel starts slowly, with nearly two hours of "prequel" delving into Oliver's unwed mother's doomed romance-a subplot given only minimal attention near the novel's end. But once this foundation has been laid, the story becomes utterly captivating, as charming waif Oliver Twist dredges through the seamy underbelly of 19th-century British society without ever losing his determination to rise above his lot in life. There are odd moments of comedy, mostly supplied by the aptly named workhouse foreman Mr. Bumble, and a few captivating scenes as Fagin (played with foreign flair by Robert Lindsay) awes his stable of children thieves with sleight of hand and street magic. Mostly, however, we're treated to voluptuous melodrama, proving the memorable characters and social commentary of the classic novel can still captivate a modern audience. From the philanthropic Mr. Brownlow to the brooding killer, Bill Sikes, to Oliver's warped half-brother, Edward "Monks" Leeford, the fantastic personalities of Dickens's characters are brought vividly to life by an extraordinarily talented cast. Keep an eye out especially for young Sam Smith, whose steely-eyed innocence is perfect for the part of Oliver, one of the best-loved heroes of English literature.
