Review Tom Hanks Gift Set (3pc) (Gift) / 20th Century Fox:Bachelor Party Bachelor Party may not be the first trashy sex comedy, but it is perhaps the definitive trashy sex comedy. The movie makes its first breast joke before the opening credits have even finished. A cheerful school bus driver (Tom Hanks) has somehow gotten engaged to a lovely young heiress, much to the chagrin of her family and vengeful ex-boyfriend. The bus driver's roustabout friends decide to throw him a bachelor party-and you can pretty much guess the rest: scantily clad hookers, rampant drug use, bad 1980s new-wave music, really bad 1980s fashions, full frontal nudity (curiously, due to a scene in a Chippendales strip club, there's almost as much male flesh on display as female), bestiality, racial stereotypes, blackmail, attempted suicide, all played for unrepentant cheap laughs. Throughout, Tom Hanks floats along with a carefree (if slightly sheepish) grin, projecting such an air of impish innocence that it's hard to be offended by any of it. And it all ends in a wedding, just like a Shakespearean comedy. Also featuring the blinding white teeth and big hair of Tawny Kitaen (playing the good girl Hanks marries), buxom scream queen Monique Gabrielle, and Adrian Zmed, whose career has not fared as well as Hanks's. -Bret Fetzer The Man with One Red Shoe Adapted from a popular French comedy-thriller, The Man with One Red Shoe follows a concert violinist (Tom Hanks) used as a patsy in a conflict between two rival factions of the CIA. Singled out at the airport solely because he's wearing mismatched shoes, Hanks is henceforth believed to be a mole with important information; a rogue crew of agents follows him, searches his apartment, and even seduces him in order to find out what he knows. At the same time, loyal agents-who also believe he's a mole-follow and protect him from predation by the rogues. [+]
Lori Singer plays a beautiful blonde spy with a conscience and an astonishing backless dress; Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, and Edward Herrmann are agents trying to second-guess each other; Jim Belushi plays Hanks's best friend, a jealous percussionist, and Carrie Fisher plays Belushi's wife, a flautist who's infatuated with Hanks and wants him to make some jungle love. Hanks plays it straight and is reliably pleasant. In the hands of Hitchcock, this might have generated some real suspense; as it is, it's amusing with some good twists, some weak gags, and one remarkable bicycle stunt. -Bret Fetzer That Thing You Do! Tom Hanks's debut as a writer and director is a lively, affectionate account of the shooting-star career of a forgotten (fictional) '60s pop-rock band called the Wonders-as in "one-hit wonders. " Hanks plays the manager of the group, which includes drummer Guy "Sticks" Patterson (Tom Everett Scott), who works the floor at his parents' appliance store in Erie, Pennsylvania; Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech), the talented and temperamental lead singer and songwriter; Lenny (Steve Zahn), the goofy guitarist; and Ethan Embry as a geeky little fellow identified in the cast list only as "The Bass Player. " The movie traces their meteoric rise and fall, from cutting their first record to going on tour with a Phil Spector/Motown-type revue to the internal tensions that lead to the band's disintegration, which comes when they fail to follow up their smash hit single, "That Thing You Do!" And that song, by the way, is so catchy it would definitely have been a hit in 1964-and deserves to be one today. This delightful movie would make a great double-bill with Allison Anders's wonderful Grace of My Heart. -Jim Emerson.

Review No, Honestly - Set 2 / Acorn Media:Real-life spouses John Alderton and Pauline Collins return as C. D. and Clara, the Burns and Allen of Hampstead, in the final six episodes of this beloved, albeit a tad dated, 1975 British comedy. The first seven episodes, collected in the first set, recalled the comically confused courtship of this mismatched but star-crossed couple. In these episodes, C. D. , an actor, and Clara, a children's book writer, flash back on their first year of marriage. Not to worry: unlike, say, Mad About You, this is no parsing of the minutiae of husband-wife relations. Clara is even more daft a wife than she was a girlfriend. In the episode "Everything in the Garden," Clara recalls the newlywed couple's first "sage and sorrel" over her insistence on painting everything in the house-and, improbably, the garden-white (except for the ground, which she leaves brown "for contrast"). [+]
And while the other episodes don't win any awards for originality (the couple host a disastrous dinner party, Clara is cast in C. D. 's avant-garde film, the couple suffer a series of surprises on their first anniversary), Alderton and Collins have a winning chemistry that gives even the less-inspired episodes a lift. Still, when Clara tearfully bids farewell at the end of the series, it's apparent that they got out while the going was good. At 13 episodes in all, No, Honestly never wears out its welcome. -Donald Liebenson.

Review The Woody Allen Collection - 8 pack / MGM (Video & DVD):Starting with 1971's Bananas, Woody Allen's second film as director, this set of eight movies includes all of Allen's work as a director up to 1980, when he wrestled with his own popularity in the Fellini-esque Stardust Memories, showcasing the distinctive arc of a filmmaker who moved from lighthearted movies to more serious fare that still remains breathtaking after 20 years. In between those two movies, there are wonderful trips of comedy, tragedy and romance to be had. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask is a hilarious set of vignettes based on the popular instructional manual, the most notable a segment featuring Gene Wilder's infatuation with a female sheep. The futuristic Sleeper and the underrated Love and Death showcase Allen at his funniest, especially the latter, which tackles the weighty subjects of Russian novels and Bergman films with adroit parody. Allen's Oscar-winning Annie Hall is one of the most joyous (and melancholy) romances ever made, with a star-making turn by Diane Keaton and a witty screenplay (cowritten with Marshall Brickman) that remains one of Allen's best. Allen did a 180 with the Bergman-esque Interiors, a sometimes stilted drama that nonetheless presaged the dysfunctional-family drama of films like Ordinary People and featured outstanding performances by Geraldine Page and Mary Beth Hurt, as well as unparalleled cinematography by Gordon Willis. The last two films in the set-the romantic Manhattan and the acidic Stardust Memories-are both gorgeously shot in black and white and represent Allen at the peak of his creative powers, as he wrestles with the meaning of life in terms of both love and art, albeit from different perspectives. Indispensable to any film fan, this boxed set represents nothing less than a landmark of American cinema. -Mark Englehart The Woody Allen Giftset includes the following: Annie Hall, Bananas, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask, Interiors, Love and Death, Manhattan, Sleeper, and Stardust Memories.

Review Monty Python's Flying Circus, Season 1 / A&E Home Video:In 1969, five overeducated British comics and an American illustrator invaded the homes of unsuspecting BBC viewers with a brand of comedy that was, at the very least, odd. "Absurd," "bizarre," and "incomprehensible" are other descriptions that jump to mind. Nonetheless, this wacky sextet inaugurated an absurd tradition that continued through three-and-a-half seasons of half-hour TV episodes, a series of live performances, a handful of movies, and a legacy of dead parrots and upper-class twits. Monty Python's Flying Circus, Season 1 features the first series of episodes foisted on a still-reeling public, introducing running gags ("And now for something completely different") and recurring characters (an armor-clad Terry Gilliam wielding a rubber chicken, Graham Chapman's pompous Colonel intruding on sketches he deems simply too silly, and of course Michael Palin's "It's a Man" wandered through the entire season). Among the sketch highlights are Nudge Nudge, the Funniest Joke in the World, How to Defend Yourself from a Man Attacking You with Fresh Fruit, Confuse a Cat, and The Dull Life of a City Stockbroker, all interspersed with various and sundry cut-out-animation sequences by Terry Gilliam. Also here are the Lumberjack Song, the Dead Parrot sketch, and the epic Science Fiction sketch (featuring the tennis-mad Blancmanges from outer space), and John Cleese announcing, "And now for something completely different" with all the authority of a BBC announcer who suddenly finds his news desk hijacked by mobsters. Some of these early episodes may lack the consistency and stream-of-consciousness flow of their later, more assured work, but they're packed with some of the most memorable moments of the group's brief but brilliant history. The Pythons hit their first-season stride in the middle episodes, in which clever sketches and strange and wonderful linking gags come together in a wierd logic, but if the final episodes of the series flag compared to their comic peak, their brand of comic madness infects every episode with moments of pure lunatic magic. -Sean Axmaker.

" This boxed set of 10 tapes offers 30 Curly shorts from the long-running Columbia series. It can be used as an excellent representative sampling of how Curly, Larry, and Moe made a fortune for their studio (although their share was quite low) or as the perfect first step toward owning the entire series. The years range from 1934 ("Punch Drunks") to 1946 ("Three Little Pirates")-their 2nd and their 96th short respectively-and one might wish they were in chronological order. Curly's illness sadly shows in his last features before Shemp took his place in the 98th short. Still, such a wide time period, out of order or not, allows us to consider how much of their material and basic situations were recycled. Curly is always the one who goes berserk at the scent of a particular perfume, the sound of a certain tune, or the sight of a mouse. In only one episode, "I Can Hardly Wait," is Moe the one inflicted with a malady (nervous collapse), and in a plot reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy's Saps at Sea, everything conspires to make him worse. Often the plots are so weak that in some cases, a goodly percent of the 18 minutes is spent on a single routine, like trying to get Curly out of a tight sweater. [+]
But one does not watch these films for plot, logic, or anything other than the sheer fun of seeing three seasoned professionals making their audiences laugh. The videos are excellent, except for some scratch lines in the last minutes of Three Little Pirates, which does not exist, apparently, in an unblemished print. -Frank Behrens.
