Review Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious Universe / Bfs Entertainment:

The subject matter-such phenomena as near-death experiences, zombies, crop circles, alien abductions, and hauntings-is potentially fascinating, but the truth is that this lengthy documentary offers little more than hoaxes, hearsay, and hogwash provided by kooks, cranks, and quacks. Arthur C. Clarke, author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, hosts six segments, each roughly 25 minutes long, that purport to explain the seemingly unexplainable. But nothing is documented, let alone proved; "My son is a zombie!" is about as scientific as it gets (indeed, the program itself seems determined to debunk some of the more hoary legends). All of which would be fine if the programs were at least entertaining; heck, a reenactment here and there would have been preferable to watching Brits with bad teeth (it's a Yorkskire Television production) droning on about the astonishing things they swear they witnessed decades ago. Stick with The X-Files. -Sam Graham Clarke and his team of highly respected scientific experts travel the globe seeking the truth behind mythical creatures, ancient legends and hair-raising rituals. Is it possible for the soul to leave the body for a glimpse of Heaven - or Hell? Are crop circles hard evidence of extra-terrestrials, hoaxes. [+]

Review Vietnam - A Television History / Wgbh Boston:

Exactly why was America in Vietnam? This remarkable and essential seven-volume series-six years in the making and originally broadcast on public television in 1983-tells the agonizing history of Vietnam's lengthy conflicts with some of the largest powers on Earth. While the primary focus is on the United States' miserable efforts to prop up a porous, anti-Communist government in South Vietnam as a bulwark against Chinese and Soviet expansionism, the series' makers expend no less energy detailing important antecedents to America's intervention. Of vital interest are the first two hours, which tell the compelling story of France's 80-year colonial rule in Southeast Asia and the rise of a European-educated generation of Vietnamese intellectuals turned warriors, chief among them the architect of Vietnam's prolonged revolt against the West, Ho Chi Minh. By the time a viewer comes to understand how and why America shrugged off Vietnamese independence after World War II, it is easier to grasp the tragic context for the disastrous military campaign of the 1960s and '70s. The rest of the series covers the various expansions of America's war in Vietnam through a succession of presidents from Eisenhower to Nixon, carefully explaining the sundry issues that drove each commander-in-chief to send more money, more troops, and more weapons into a seemingly unwinnable and dubious battle. The later volumes take the story into Laos and the horrible siege of Cambodia by a U. S. -supported Khmer Rouge, and examine the history of the antiwar movement in America. No stone is left unturned in this important project, which runs some 13 hours and should be considered one of the most important television series in history. -Tom Keogh An extraordinary, Emmy award-winning series about the people who masterminded this controversial war, and the Americans and Vietnamese who fought it. Review Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns / Pbs Home Video:

Accompanied by a menagerie of products, Ken Burns's expansive 10-episode paean, Jazz, completes his trilogy on American culture, following The Civil War and Baseball. Spanning more than 19 hours, Jazz is, of course, about a lot more than what many have called America's classical music-especially in episodes 1 through 7. It's here that Burns unearths precious visual images of jazz musicians and hangs historical narratives around the music with convincing authority. Time can stand still as images float past to the sound of grainy vintage jazz, and the drama of a phonograph needle being placed on Louis Armstrong's celestial "West End Blues" is nearly sublime. The film is also potent in arguing that the history of race in the 20th-century U. S. is at jazz's heart. But a few problems arise. First is Burns's reliance on Wynton Marsalis as his chief musical commentator. Marsalis might be charming and musically expert, but he's no historian. [+]
For the film to devote three of its episodes to the 1930s, one expects a bit more historical substance. Also, Jazz condenses the period of 1961 to the present into one episode, glossing over some of the music's giant steps. Burns has said repeatedly that he didn't know much about jazz when he began this project. So perhaps Jazz, for all its glory, would better be called Jazz: What I've Learned Since I Started Listening (And I Haven't Gotten Much Past 1961). For those who are already passionate about jazz, the film will stoke debate (and some derision, together with some reluctant praise). But for everyone else, it will amaze and entertain and kindle a flame for some of the greatest music ever dreamed. -Andrew Bartlett The story, sound, and soul of a nation come together in the most American of art forms: Jazz. Ken Burns, who riveted the nation with The Civil War and Baseball, celebrates the music's soaring achievements, from its origins in blues and ragtime through swing, bebop, and fusion. Six years in the making, this "soundbreaking" series blends 75 interviews, more than 500 pieces of music, 2,400 still photographs, and over 2,000 rare and archival film clips. The 10-part musical journey spotlights many of America's most original, creative-and tragic-figures, including Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis.

Review The Korean War (4-volume set) / A&E Home Video:

When North Korea surged across the 38th Parallel into the south on July 25, 1950, it marked the first full-scale confrontation of the cold war. In the years to come, Korea's divided country would became a global political chessboard with the communists backing the offensive North and the U. S. and United Nations supporting the defensive South. What would follow were among the most brutal battles in the history of global warfare: the Pusan Perimeter, the Inchon Invasion, Pork Chop Hill, the Iron Triangle, and Heartbreak Ridge. The Korean War: Fire and Ice, the four-part History Channel series, explores the historical factors, political entanglements, and military strategies of this pivotal struggle in exceptional detail. Rare black-and-white footage is combined with a diverse and knowledgeable group of veterans to paint a gripping, complete perspective of the Korean conflict. From its politically intertwined beginnings through the brutal battles and the unsettling truce that would leave more than 2 million lives in its wake, the Korea conflict would set the standards of East and West relations for the next 50 years. In spite of its political, historical, and military significance, the Korean War remains one of the least examined incidents in modern warfare. The Korean War: Fire and Ice is an excellent telling of military history as it was encountered by those who were there. [+]

Review The Abbey, Box Set / Homevision:

The Abbey is a three-episode BBC program that traces a day in the life of Westminster Abbey. Narrated by actor Alan Bennett, the acclaimed author of The Madness of King George, this is the video equivalent of a tourist visit to the Abbey, and then some. The series differs from other similar documentaries in that the building is shown "at work," filled with the bustling activity of the custodial staff, delivery people, preservation crews, religious figures, schoolchildren, and especially tourists. Bennett watches the early morning rituals of the "Abbey family," the people who tune the organ, dust the statues, deliver the milk, attend the first service of the day, and such, and provides a general introduction to the layout and history of one of England's most popular tourist attractions. He visits the final resting places of many monarchs as well as Sir Laurence Olivier, Lord Byron, the Brontë sisters, and Jane Austen. Bennett stays to experience the Abbey's quiet evening rituals-the boys' choir practice, a private tour given by the dean, and compline, the last service of the day. Bennett's narrative is at times painfully slow, wry, and effete, but it includes a wealth of amusing and informative anecdotes, citations, and historical fact. This look at Westminster Abbey will appeal to anyone interested in the architecture, day-to-day life, and religious and lay history of this venerated British building. Think of it as a virtual tour. -Tara Chace Mary Queen of Scots, Chaucer, Sir Laurence Olivier and many more make Westminster Abbey one of the most visited grave sites in the world. [+]
Renowned playwright Alan Bennett explores the living history of the Abbey and meets the family of over 100 people who keep it running 365 days a year. History, religion, human nature, the English, and Englishness are all carefully examined as Bennett wanders through Westminster Abbey. Mingling with the crowds of tourists, watching cleaners and tour guides at work, and eavesdropping on services, dedications, and Abbey management meetings, Bennett presents an intimate portrait of the everyday life found in this historic building.
