Review The World at War - The Final Solution / Hbo Home Video:

This four-tape set by the same British producers responsible for the classic World at War series chronicles the Nazi obsession with killing all of Europe's Jews. Making intelligent use of archival photographs, newsreel footage, and extensive footage shot by the Nazis themselves, the series begins by tracing the roots of Nazism back to Germany's humiliation at the end of World War I. The rise of Hitler and the SS, his elite guard that evolved into being the enforcers of racial doctrine, is cogently presented in the first episode. The successive tapes each focus on a particular time period, as the Nazi determination to eliminate Jews built momentum, proceeding from a program of persecution to resettlement to outright mass murder. Holocaust survivors speak on camera in interviews, as do German civilians and former members of the SS. The film footage shown is often quite grisly, and some will find it difficult viewing, but the producers deserve credit for seeking out material, especially films shot by the Nazis themselves, that accurately depicts the horrors that took place. Indeed, without the strong visual component of the production, some of the chilling stories told by the survivors on film may be thought too horrible to be true. This is a remarkably straightforward look at one of the absolute horrors of history. -Robert J. McNamara.

Review David Icke: Freedom Road / UFO TV:

David Icke tells the astonishing story of how the world is controlled today by "royal" bloodlines seeded in the ancient world that have passed through history, manipulating the human race for thousands of years. The bloodlines that were the kings and queens of the distant past are the same bloodlines that today produce the political leaders and those who control the banks, transnational corporations and media. Using hundreds of illustrations, Icke exposes this biggest secret and explains how and why we are now racing towards a global fascist state - unless we wake up fast. He also offers the spiritual (not religious) road to freedom and says that we can transform the world and our lives by transforming ourselves and understanding our true power to design our own destiny. What has happened? What is happening? What can happen? All is revealed in this eye-opening, mind-opening, heart-opening, video package.

NOTE: The American Experience producers responsible for the Vietnam series recently re-edited the original 13-part Vietnam series. The editing was undertaken to remove outdated information and to create a more cohesive story for viewers. WGBH Boston Video has reduced the purchase price for the Vietnam series to $79. 95 to reflect the shorter running time. A six-year project from conception to completion, this eleven-hour VHS collection carefully analyzes the costs and consequences of this controversial but intriguing war. From the first episode to the last, it provides a detailed visual and oral account of the war that changed a generation and continues to color American thinking on many military and foreign policy issues.

Review The Movies Begin - A Treasury of Early Cinema, 1894-1913 / Kino International:

The home-video revolution has yielded a wealth of valuable compilations, but few are as miraculously definitive as The Movies Begin. Equally suited to home or classroom viewing, this authoritative five-volume set is a vital document of film history, providing a one-stop destination for anyone wishing to witness the first two decades of motion pictures. That period-from 1894 to 1913-saw movies develop at a breakneck pace, from the earliest "actualities" of the Lumière brothers in France to D. W. Griffith's audacious development of dramatic action in the Biograph shorts of the early 1910s. Sensibly organized into pivotal stages of technical and creative progress, each of these volumes represents the priceless value of film preservation; all 133 films in the set are presented in the finest condition available, from archival prints to complete restorations, and accompanied by music that perfectly captures the spirit of each film and the time of their creation. Under the expert guidance of film historian David Shepard, this collection is uniquely comprehensive, with fact, fiction, and fantasy represented in equal measure. All major figures are included; it's fitting that one volume is devoted to astonishing shorts by movie magician Georges Méliès, while other volumes serve as "greatest hits" compilations of movie innovations by Edwin S. Porter, Cecil Hepworth, Max Linder, Alice Guy Blanche, and many others. The breathtaking growth of movies is fully apparent by volume 5 ("Comedy, Spectacle, and New Horizons"); most viewers will find this the most entertaining, but each volume is a revelation, offering films that haven't been widely seen since they were first produced. [+]
To understand and appreciate the foundation upon which modern filmmaking is built, The Movies Begin is truly essential. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Wgbh Boston / Nova: Dinosaur Hunt (3pc) Release date: 2000-03-28
Run time: 180 min.
Price: $39.95

Review Nova: Dinosaur Hunt (3pc) / Wgbh Boston:

This boxed set of three programs from the PBS Nova series presents innovative looks at the great reptiles that fascinate us so as well as a peek at how interest in them has lead to human drama. T. Rex Exposed examines the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex, the most notorious dinosaur ever. The evolution of thought about how T. rex must have lived is presented in fascinating detail. Case of the Flying Dinosaur is something of a detective story that seeks to answer the question of whether birds are descendants of dinosaurs or just creatures with similar body types. And a dinosaur find that led to a federal prosecution and legal wrangling that seemed to go on for eons is the subject of Curse of T. Rex. The world's most complete T. rex skeleton, named Sue for the fossil hunter who found it in South Dakota, involved a cast of unlikely characters in a ruckus that shook the little-known world of commercial fossil hunters, scientists, and even the Sioux Native American tribe. [+]
The tapes in the Dinosaur Hunt collection are entertaining throughout, and as one would expect from Nova productions, the science is always intelligently presented. -Robert J. McNamara Of all the creatures that ever walked the earth, none captures the human imagination like the dinosaur. Be on the scene as scientists discover important clues to these fascinating creatures. In Curse of T. rex, an unusual battle is brewing: Who gets to keep Sue, a magnificent million dollar T. rex that turned up on a South Dakota ranch? Everyone wants a piece of her, from the tribal council to the fossil dealers to the scientists. Head out west and join the investigation in this tale of fossil crime and punishment. Case of the Flying Dinosaur explores the link between dinosaurs and birds, and tunes in to the fierce Debate, about whether dinosaurs are truly extinct, that continues to captivate no matter how you choose to draw the family tree. T. rex Exposed takes us to a suspenseful dig in Montana, where a crew is carefully uncovering one of the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex specimens ever found: a remarkably preserved skeleton some 40 feet long. Hear what the experts have to say about how this mysterious beast lived, and what kind of cosmic zap may have made it die.
