Review Reboot 2 (Dub) / Adv Films:Future techies in search of screen-popping adventures souped up with the latest cyber lingo need look no farther than ReBoot: Season III, Vol. 2, (a series that airs on the Cartoon Network), which finds the formatless Matrix and AndrAIa along with their virtual pup, Frisket, fighting their way through a gamut of games, all of which have been infected by evil. The goal of the hard-bodied and green-tinged yet still good-looking pair, known among the folds of funny-looking creatures who inhabit the games as guardians, or good guys, whose job it is to "mend and defend," goes beyond superheroics. Mostly, they're interested in hopping a ride onto the Internet, where they can navigate their way back to their long lost home, Mainframe. In this endeavor, they're consistently stymied, but not much else stumps them, at least not for long. In episode 1 of this four-part tape, Icons, something suspicious is sucking the life out of a nearly defenseless system; Matrix assembles an army of R2-D2-like recruits and heads off to Chron the Destroyer where, after a successful reboot, he's able to help make repairs. From there, in Where No Sprite Has Gone Before, Number 7, and The Episode with No Name, the pair defies deletion through crash-threatening tears, identity altering reboots, superviruses, and hostage situations. Whether they'll ever make it back to Mainframe is anybody's guess, but boys and girls 8 and up whose hard drives occupy a special place in their hearts will have an "alphanumeric" time waiting to find out. -Tammy La Gorce.

Review Battle Athletes - Beginning - On Your Mark / Geneon [Pioneer]:The adventures of teenage girl athletes have been standard fare in manga since the late '60s, with anime following. Battle Athletes is based on a video game set in the year 4999. Promising girls are sent to a special satellite to train to compete for the coveted title of "Cosmic Beauty," a contest that grew out of the settlement of an interplanetary war 1,000 years earlier. The daughter of a former winner, 16-year-old Akari Kanzaki arrives at the satellite hoping to match her mother's performance. "Chronicle Beginning" sets up Akari and the major supporting characters. Akari is assigned to a team with Kris, a confident, spiritual girl from a back-to-nature commune on the moon, and the terminally shy and whiny Anna. Tanya, an ebullient, food-obsessed African girl, lends comic relief and the icy Mylandah supplies heavy-handed villainy. Training begins in earnest in "Oath Entrant," as the girls compete in zero gravity lacrosse matches: Kris plays skillfully, Mylandah cheats, Tanya hollers, Anna snivels. Akari, who's new to the game, is frustrated by her poor showing but eventually learns the importance of teamwork, patience, and friendship. These lessons mix rah-rah innocence with cutthroat competitiveness and suggestions of lesbianism. [+]
Despite the presence of genial headmaster Grant Oldman, the girls get very little formal training. They compete against each other and the high-tech machinery, but the animation is too limited to convey running and the other athletic feats convincingly. -Charles Solomon.

Review Varibale Geo (Dub) / Adv Films:Waitresses compete in the VG Martial Arts Tournament to see who's the strongest: they slide a card into a sort of parking meter and an arena appears wherever they happen to be. The winner gets $10 million and some prime real estate; the loser loses her clothes-in front of the audience. Yuka is favored to win, but her best friend Satomi needs the money to pay for her little brother's operation. Opposing them is the current champion Madame Reimi, who is attached to the vast Jahana corporation, where a sinister staff is involved in illegal biomedical experiments. With its ridiculous plot, physically overdeveloped but psychologically underdeveloped characters, and gratuitous female nudity, Variable Geo is, simply, fan service trash. (Rated 15 and older but more appropriate for over 17: violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, nudity, risqué humor, torture, alcohol use) -Charles Solomon.

Review Night on the Galactic Railroad / Central Park Media:Based on a short story by the popular children's writer Kenji Miyazawa, Galactic Railroad offers viewers a slow-paced, dreamlike journey through space and time. When Giovanni, a lonely boy in a hill town, goes to get milk for his ailing mother, he finds himself crossing the Milky Way on a faster-than-light steam railroad. The stations he visits in various constellations, like the planets explored by St. Exupery's Little Prince, offer curious adventures and an assortment of human "types. " Reality and fantasy blur aboard the train, and its travels across the light-years sometimes suggests the journey through life. The characters as depicted as cats, presumably to avoid the problems of animating humans. Filmmaker Gisaburo Sugii's long career as an animator, director, executive director, and screenwriter began on The White Snake Enchantress, the first postwar Japanese feature. He has worked on projects ranging from the mildly erotic Cleopatra, Queen of Sex (1970) to Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy to a feature adaptation of the 11th-century novel The Tale of Genji. In the U. S. [+]
he's best known as the director of the movie version of the popular video game Street Fighter II. The contrast between the deadly battles of Street Fighter and the almost hypnotic pace of Galactic Railroad is striking. -Charles Solomon Based upon the 1927 Japanese literary classic, Night on the Galactic Railroad is a wondrous fable, filled with magic and symbolism. Giovanni is a poor boy whose life is filled with hardship. But his life is about to change. While he is staring into the starry sky, a mysterious galactic train appears. Together with his only friend, Campanella, Giovanni travels the constellations of the Milky Way, where he witnesses inspiring beauty, tragic loss, and the splendors of the universe. Together, the boys experience a voyage of inner discovery that will transform them forever.

Review Hyper Doll, Act 1 - Mew & Mica the Easy Fighters / Geneon [Pioneer]:It's difficult to tell if this super-heroine adventure is meant as spoof or a real story: the tone is silly and the fragmentary story line makes little sense. Although they appear to be ordinary (if curvaceous) high school students, Mew and Mica are really alien androids, assigned to protect Earth from the monsters summoned by the mysterious Dr. Zaiclit and his henchmen. In "Earth Is in a Bind," he sics a gigantic grasshopper and a jellyfish-octopus on Tokyo, a combination that can be defeated only by the Hyperdolls. In "Peace on Earth," a monster earthworm threatens the planet until Mew and Mica reduce it to so much live bait. The Hyperdolls aren't particularly endearing characters. The only person who knows their true identity is their classmate Akai, a computer nerd who attempts to keep them focused on their assignment. They respond by making his life miserable-until a hologram of their boss appears (atop a pizza in "Bind") and orders them back to work. The story starts and stops, with no real beginning, middle, or end, and will appeal only to uncritical anime fans: Hyperdolls makes Tenchi Muyo! sound like Kant's "The Critique of Pure Reason. " Rated for ages 13 and up for nudity, violence, and occasional profanity. [+]
