Review Saber Marionette J Again - Plasmatic Crisis Collection (Vols 1-3) / Bandai Entertainment:This six-part OVA serves as a bridge between Saber Marionette J (1995) and Saber Marionette J to X (1998). It repeats the weirdly sexist setup from the earlier series: decidedly female-looking robots called Marionettes take the place of women on Terra II. The first three episodes play as a sort of domestic comedy, with Faust sending his three Marionettes, Tiger, Panther, and Luchs, to learn about domesticity from Otaru's crew of Lime, Cherry, and Bloodberry. In the woods, Lime meets the mysterious and powerful Marionette Marine, who joins their household. The story darkens in the second trio of episodes, as a once-every-80,000-years "Plasma Storm" threatens to destroy Terra II. The dangers are increased via a weird subplot in which the nasty president of New Texas tries to capture Marine using "liquid metal" cyborgs lifted from Terminator 2. Much of J Again plays like a very un-PC cross between Tenchi and Slayers. The Marionettes all love Otaru and desire only to please him, although it's not clear why. Unlike Tenchi or Akito in Nadesico, Otaru never displays the good heart or hidden powers that would make him worth all the bother. The series offers lots of "fan service" jiggle shots, and there's a running gag involving Hanagata, a gay guy who makes passes at Otaru, only to get punched out by him-all of which will probably delight many adolescent boys, the obvious audience for the discs. Review Gunnm:This film contains graphic violence and brief nudity. Known as Gunnm in Japan and then Battle Angel Alita to Western manga readers, Battle Angel (in all of its incarnations) is now part of the canon of Blade Runner-inspired anime cyberpunk. The film version follows a "Hunter Warrior" and cyborg healer named Ido. Ido formerly lived in the floating land of Zalem (Tiphares in the book), the paradise that hovers over the refuse heap of Scrap Iron City in which he now resides with his former lover, Chiren. In his travels as a bounty hunter (killing spine thieves in a world in which human nerve tissue has become the most precious commodity), Ido one day discovers and repairs the remnants of a cyborg whom he names Gally (Alita in the manga). Though possessing the body of a young woman, Gally embodies Ido's most sophisticated and lethal cybernetic skill. In the first episode on the DVD, "Rusty Angel," Gally challenges Chiren's own creation, Greweicia-a brain-eating gladiator-to a death match. In "Tears Sign" Gally discovers that her first love, Yugo, has put himself in the employ of the spine trader Vector so that he can earn his way, he thinks, to Zalem. Gally confronts her fellow bounty hunters to protect Yugo, only to watch him horribly wounded in a plot to capture her for Vector. Yukito Kishiro's finely detailed line drawings in the original manga (like a cleaner version of Miyazaki's style in the Nausicaa books) are impossible to translate into film. [+]What the film loses in detail, however, it makes up for in its intense action sequences and shadowy mixtures of color and a darkly cinematic soundtrack. Anime fans should be prepared for some pretty graphic violence-including some horrific scenes of decapitation. Also, the action keeps the plot moving at breakneck speed, so character development often seems to happen in leaps; you'll want to read the books to learn more about Gally/Alita and her world. For English speakers, the DVD is best watched in the original Japanese with subtitles. The dubbing seems to raise the pitch of everyone's voice, changing the mood of the film from tragic-cool to slightly comical. Gally's English is especially annoying. With her original Japanese voice (sometimes childlike and sometimes a seductive whisper), she is a perfectly deadly heroine with a leather-clad style that anticipates The Matrix. -Patrick O'Kelley.

Review Lupin the 3rd - The Secret of Twilight Gemini (Edited Version) / Funimation Prod:Originally broadcast in 1996, Twilight Gemini was the ninth installment in the series of made-for-TV movies starring manga artist Monkey Punch's master thief. Mafia don Dolune gives Lupin half of a diamond known as the Twilight: when the two halves are brought together, they form the key to a fabulous treasure. Lupin heads for Morocco to find the long-lost loot and is attacked by masked assassins, a whip-wielding transvestite, and the inevitable Inspector Zenigata and his inept Interpol henchmen. No one expects a Lupin film to make too much sense, but this flimsy tale is both underwritten and badly paced. The chase scenes generate little excitement, and the fights lack panache. Although Lupin III remains one of the most durable franchises in anime history, Twilight Gemini ranks among the lesser works in the canon. Review Magic Users Club - I Wanna Do More / Anime Works:The broadcast series of Magic User's Club picks up where the OVA left off in 1997, with Takeo, Aburatsubo, Sae, and Nanaka causing new trouble. The space bell has been transformed into a giant cherry tree, so the club members cope with fairly mundane problems, rather than alien mecha attacks. In "Sae, the Bathroom, and the Door," a teleportation spell goes haywire, causing doors to lead to unexpected places-Takeo's refrigerator opens into Sae's bathroom, while Nanaka's closet connects to Aburatsubo's attic. But most of the humor quickly falls into formulae: people overhear lines that suggest Aburatsubo is seducing Takeo, but the reality is relatively innocent. Takeo goes into spasms of lust at the sight of the manga club president's redoubtable bustline (or the thought of a girl); Sae stumbles and bumbles along, but comes out on top. (Rated 13 and older: violence, nudity, risqué humor) -Charles Solomon The aliens have been defeated, and the Bell has been transformed into a gigantic cherry tree. Now, the brave Magic User's Club must reconvene to deal with a new problem. Sae, Nanaka, Takeo and Aburatsubo are all on the case. Akane would be with them, of course, but she has a date. And, what is the problem our intrepid Magic Club must solve? Well, apparently some inconsiderate persons left a skyscraper sized cherry tree in the middle of Tokyo, and it's become a major inconvenience to everyone in the city. [+]Even though they have no idea who could have done such a thing, the Club feels strangely responsible and spring into action!.

Review Neon Genesis Evangelion - The End Of Evangelion (English Subtitles) / WEA:When the first Evangelion feature, Death and Rebirth, proved no more satisfying than the last episodes of the original series, Hideaki Anno brought his watershed epic to its conclusion in this final installment. End of Evangelion begins where the series ended: with the Angels defeated, the sinister cabal SEELE attacks NERV headquarters to seize the Evas and realize their plan for humanity. Misato and Ritsuko fight from inside while Asuka decimates a new Eva series. But when Rei merges with Lilith, and Shinji seems to fuse with Unit 01, the final traces of a coherent storyline dissolve into a protracted collage of fantastic images, played against discussions involving Rei, Shinji, Asuka, and Kaoru. Anno's dazzling apocalyptic vision forms a weird but oddly logical finale that ultimately means whatever the viewer chooses to read into it.
