Review Nitty-Gritty Basketball Video 8: Dribbling:Basketball Dribbling shows college players working on drills and skills needed to dribble well. The author producer, Sidney Goldstein, indicates that dribbling is the easiest ball skill (the ball skills include dribbling, shooting and passing) to teach. The biggest problem is the idea that you can't teach players how to dribble- and this of course becomes a self fulfilling prophesy if coaches make no attempt. After hurdling that impediment, coaches and players need to work on these basics. One, body position, which is the same body position needed for defense: knees bent with feet at slightly greater than shoulder width, back up not bent. Two, wrist movement. Dribbles are just flicks of the wrist rather than arm movements. The reason we see so much palming today is because players dribble with the arm instead of the wrist. Skill three involves protecting the ball, dribbling with defensive contact. This is why players need to work on dribbling in awkward positions. [+]
And of course the most important skill involves keeping the head up. If you can't do this the author says, then you simply should not dribble, That's why all dribbling drills are visual, players must look up for directions. More important than even skills Goldstein says that knowing when to dribble is key to a teams offensive success. The answer is simple: only when you can't pass.
