Review The Fox and the Hound:

The Fox and the Hound marked the last collaboration between Disney's older artists, including three of the "Nine Old Men" (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and Woolie Reitherman), and the young animators who would make the record-breaking films of the '90s. Based on a book by Daniel P. Mannix, the film tells the story of a bloodhound puppy and a fox kit who begin as friends but are forced to become enemies. Tod and Copper barely establish their friendship before Copper begins his training as hunting dog. Unfortunately, neither character develops much of a personality, which makes it difficult to care about them. The screen comes alive near end of the film, when Tod and Copper have to join forces to fight off an enormous bear. It had been years since Disney produced a sequence with this kind of feral power-and years would pass before they surpassed it. The Fox and the Hound ranks as one of the studio's lesser efforts, but it suggests that better films were soon to follow. (Ages 5 and older) -Charles Solomon.

Review The Iron Giant:

This gentle reworking of Ted Hughes's 1968 novella was the unseen gem of 1999. Hogarth, a young boy who lives in the Maine woods during the cold war, befriends a giant robot. As with E. T. , the iron giant is a misunderstood outsider who becomes a child's best friend, and Hogarth does his best to hide the massive figure from his mom (voiced by Jennifer Aniston) and the local scrap-yard beatnik (Harry Connick Jr. ). Soon the suspicions of neighbors and a government agent (Christopher McDonald) spell trouble. With no songs, no sidekicks, and no cheap ending, The Iron Giant is a refreshing change- like an off-Broadway production compared to the glitz of Disney's annual animated extravaganzas. Director Brad Bird may have Family Dog and The Simpsons to his credit, but this film doesn't have that brand of scatological humor. As with the best family entertainments, there are gags that adults will howl at while the kids are watching something else (see Bird's interpretation of cold war propaganda). [+]
And the star is one cool piece of animated magic. Voiced by Vin Diesel (Saving Private Ryan's hulking Private Caparzo) and filled with more gadgets than a Swiss army knife, the giant is a grand thing to behold. And like another famous cinema tin man, our hero-and the movie-has heart. Superb entertainment for ages 5 and up. -Doug Thomas.

Review Subzero:

The Dark Knight and his cohorts Robin and Batgirl do battle with a scarily sympathetic archvillain in this superior animated movie that both kids and adults can watch without feeling insulted. While not quite as inspired as the previous Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (which is still the best portrayal of the title character ever to grace the screen), this well-plotted, awesomely stylish wall-to-wall actioner perfectly captures the fundamental essence of the classic comics, and makes the treatment of the same characters in the painful live-action Batman & Robin look even more ineptly misguided. Simply put, this is how the Masked Manhunter of Gotham should be depicted. -Andrew Wright.

Review SpongeBob SquarePants - Sea Stories / Paramount:

Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants has become so popular, it must be considered a phenomenon. The series has a pleasant, predictable, and slightly offbeat humor, and these mini-adventures give viewers what they expect. SpongeBob has to deal with a ghostly pirate, his own insecurities when his skill as a preparer of krabby patties is challenged, and the dangerous pleasures of fisherman's hooks. The voice acting is often amateurish and imitative. Patrick suggests a Homer Simpson-wannabe, while Bubble Bass sounds like the Comic Book Guy. The humor can become gross. In episode No. 2, SpongeBob absorbs a bathtub full of water, then vomits it at Gary, the snail who acts as his dog. But it seems pointless to grumble about these weaknesses. SpongeBob SquarePants has clearly won a place in the hearts of American viewers. [+]

Review Belle's Magical World:

This straight-to-video animated story is set in the Beast's castle which, as viewers know from the original Beauty and the Beast film, is under a spell until the Beast can learn to love. Starting with this familiar premise, Belle's Magical World plummets into three disjointed episodes surrounding Belle's life as a captive in the castle. In "The Perfect World," a misunderstanding of words erupts between Belle and Beast, made worse by a feigned apology. Fifi and Lumiere take the spotlight in "Fifi's Folly," when a romantic evening together becomes a chilling adventure inside a runaway sleigh. In "The Broken Wing," Belle entreats the Beast to act kindly toward a tiny songbird. Each tale offers a diluted moral message, yet the entire effort feels contrived and confusing, a ploy by the folks at Disney to add cash to their coffers by exploiting the popularity of the original motion picture classic. Review The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship:

In this excellent retelling of a Russian folk tale, young Pyotr proves that nice guys can finish first if they have tenacity and good friends on their side. Pyotr is but a woodcutter when his lazy brothers take the family's lean savings and go off to answer the king's call for a flying ship in exchange for his daughter's hand in marriage. When they fail to return, the humble Pyotr sets off to find them and finds a magical flying ship instead. So it's off to the palace, picking up a boatload of unusually talented hitchhikers along the way. The king and his evil adviser hatch a plan to assign the peasant troupe a series of impossible tasks so they can banish them and take the ship. The story is told in stop-motion animation with detailed sets and exquisitely designed models who are neither cute nor scary. The superb writing and low-key narration by David Suchet no doubt helped earn this installment of the public television series Long Ago and Far Away an Emmy Award. Ages 3 and older. -Kimberly Heinrichs.
