Review Rich and Famous / Tai Seng Entertainment:Chow Yun-fat in his smooth, controlled Better Tomorrow mode as a charismatic gang lord. It's a derivative mob chronicle, enjoyable but flat-footed to the point of incoherence (most of the visual and character transitions are bungled). Basically it's about two young brothers who get into crime in the '50s, after the super-cool "nice" gang boss, Chai (Chow), shields them from a nasty older gangster with a shaved head. Eventually one of the brothers, Yung (Alex Man Chi-lung), betrays Chai, strangles a lovable fat Thai drug smuggler, and goes into business for himself. The second, good brother emigrates to Malaysia to open a seafood restaurant. The movie makes no sense morally: Chow's character is a drug smuggler, but he's romanticized because he rewards loyalty and loves puppies. The tangled undergrowth of brother-love, father-love, boss-love, and he-manly loyalty-almost none of it thought through or sorted out-would be far too rich an emotional stew for most American films. The sequel, Tragic Hero, is actually a better movie. -David Chute.

Review The Color of Pomegranates / Kino Video:This controversial 1969 film directed by rebellious Russian filmmaker Sergei Paradzhanov (Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors) chronicles the life of the 18th-century poet Sayat Nova, but in a most unconventional way. Paradzhanov seeks to portray the poet by different actors at various stages of his long life, from a poor childhood working on farms through early celebration as a poet to his self-imposed isolation as a cloistered monk. The unorthodox stream-of-consciousness style of the film highlights character over plot, using the poet's own words as a springboard for sumptuous images that chart the course of his life from birth until death, from his youth and the great love of his life through his struggles with religion and philosophy and the despair of old age. The loose, evocative style not only brings to life the poetry of Sayat Nova's body of work, but also brings great weight to the poetry of his life. Challenging, defiant, and unconventional, The Color of Pomegranates is a must for those searching for new and different forms of filmmaking. -Robert Lane.

Review Stalingrad / Fox Lorber:It's tempting to call this harrowing picture a World War II version of All Quiet on the Western Front: both films take the perspective of ordinary German soldiers at ground level. Stalingrad surveys the misery of the battle of Stalingrad, the winter siege that cost the lives of almost one and a half million people, Russian defenders and German invaders alike. Not unlike Spielberg's approach to Saving Private Ryan, German director Joseph Vilsmaier rarely steps outside the action to comment on the higher purpose of the war, assuming the audience is aware of the evil of the Nazi regime. Instead, we simply follow a group of soldiers as they endure a series of gut-wrenching episodes, events which have the tang of authenticity and horror. Vilsmaier has a taste for symbolism and surreal touches, which only add to the unsettling sense of insanity this movie conjures up so well. -Robert Horton.

Review Zuijia paidang daxian shentong / Tai Seng Video:The popular series was already beginning to turn smug and self-indulgent by 1983, when the first sequel was released. The visually inventive action comedy of the bracing original (which for some reason is not currently available on video) was replaced with a lot of mugging slapstick, as affianced cops Baldy (Karl Mak) and Inspector Ho (the glorious Sylvia Chang) are repeatedly waylaid by criminal activity on their way to the altar. Meanwhile, master thief King Kong (played by pop star Sam Hui, brother of Michael) has been framed for a series of robberies, and a Caucasian hit man named Filthy Harry keeps trying to bump everybody off. It's not what you'd call a tightly plotted picture, but director Eric Tsang designs sequences that are thrilling on a purely graphic level-like the squads of identical motorbikes and Jaguars that execute choreographed pirouettes during the chase sequences. Beanpole genius movie director Tsui Hark (Once Upon a Time in China) has a brief supporting role. -David Chute.

Review Carry On Pickpocket / Tai Seng Video:Carry On Pickpocket is a tedious action comedy about lovable sneak thieves who team up with the cops to entrap some mobsters who are making life tough for everyday decent crooks. Sammo Hung (TV's Martial Law does his standard wistful fat-nebbish number-until he's either dancing or fighting, when the joke becomes how surprisingly graceful he is. (Thugs in HK movies have been saying "Hey, fatty" to him, and then paying dearly for it, for quite a few years now. ) Some of the pickpocketing scenes, and the later full-bore action stuff, are almost up to Hung's mature standard (Eastern Condors), and for a supposed comedy the movie is often startlingly vicious. For completists only. -David Chute.

Review Tender Cousins / Homevision:Beautiful young French people romp on an idyllic country estate in Tender Cousins. The story, set in 1939, centers around Julien, a young adolescent boy in love with his cousin Julia, who is in love with the foppish Charles, who is engaged to be married to Julien's older sister Claire, who. you get the idea. Julien and Julia's little sister Poune, who seems to know what everyone is up to, engage in pranks; a visiting actress puts on a theatrical revue; everyone pursues the new maid; a scientist believes he has isolated the soul, which he captures in balloons; and, when war against Germany is declared, the adult men must go off to war, giving the otherwise lyrical story a sad undercurrent. Flashes of wit, bits of silliness, and a good dose of nudity make Tender Cousins pretty much the definition of its brand of French sex comedy. -Bret Fetzer Owing much to Jean Renoir's Rules of the Game, Tender Cousins is also set in the French countryside on the eve of World War II. This film is a true coming of age story told through the eyes of cousins, Julien (Thierry Tevini) and Christine.

Review Le Beau Serge / Henstooth Video:Often considered the real beginning of the French New Wave movement, this 1958 film, the first feature by Claude Chabrol, is also-strangely-underrated on its own terms. The story of a theology student (Jean-Claude Brialy) who returns to his provincial home town for convalescence and reunites with his unhappy childhood friend (Gerard Blain), the film introduces many of Chabrol's pet themes and interests, particularly the Hitchcockian relationship between two characters who transfer or implicitly share a private experience or fate. Chabrol's consideration of that idea would naturally deepen and become more complex over the years (brilliantly in 1969's La Femme Infidele and Le Boucher), but at this career flashpoint it is a little overstated and obvious in religious allusions. Still, Le Beau Serge is an engrossing film with no shortage of dramatic momentum. The final act, driven by the main character's efforts at self-sacrifice, is as affecting as ever. -Tom Keogh.
