Review "Yes, Madam! " / Tai Seng Video:

A slamming, brass-knuckles action film (with simpering comic interludes) about a pair of female cops on the trail of a gang of counterfeiters. In her 1987 film debut, future Bond girl Michelle Yeoh (Tomorrow Never Dies) is teamed with American karate champ and B-movie action queen Cynthia Rothrock, and the acrobatic fights are staged for maximum floor-slamming impact. The plot is like Rush Hour in reverse: Rothrock is an American cop working in Hong Kong, flabbergasting the locals with her Chinese-language skills and rubber-limbed high kicks (when a thug grabs her from behind, she kicks him in the face). Director Corey Yuen (who staged the fight sequences in Lethal Weapon 4) delivers action in fast, hard bursts, with stunt work that rivals the eye-popping best of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. Visiting directors Tsui Hark (Peking Opera Blues) and Hung himself have tiny cameo roles, as money-mad dupes of the Sinotrash bad guys. -David Chute.

Review Farewell China / Tai Seng Video Marketing:

Tony Leung Kar-fai tracks his missing expatriate wife (Maggie Cheung) from Hong Kong to New York City, which is depicted simply as an urban sewer in this gratingly arch and pretentious 1990 melodrama, written and directed by the ambitious young director Clara Law (The Reincarnation of Golden Lotus). Every specific detail of the horrors of New York rings luridly false, and Maggie Cheung, who was just about perfect in Ann Hui's expat heart-tugger Song of the Exile, embarrasses herself. In fairness, no actress on earth could make something convincingly human out of the character she has been asked to play, a victim whose personality has been split down the middle by the pressures of her icky new environment. One half is a demure Chinese village girl, the other a borderline whore, a role she's forced to assume in order to survive in the Gotham Inferno. As he continues his search, Leung picks up a standard-issue eccentric sidekick, a streetwise, gum-popping Americanized Chinese girl (Hayley Man as a stereotyped punk rocker). The fatal finale (in the shadow of a papier-mâché copy of Tiananmen Square's Goddess of Democracy) is only the most egregious of the movie's overblown symbolic gestures. -David Chute.

Review Carry On Pickpocket / Tai Seng Video:

Carry On Pickpocket is a tedious action comedy about lovable sneak thieves who team up with the cops to entrap some mobsters who are making life tough for everyday decent crooks. Sammo Hung (TV's Martial Law does his standard wistful fat-nebbish number-until he's either dancing or fighting, when the joke becomes how surprisingly graceful he is. (Thugs in HK movies have been saying "Hey, fatty" to him, and then paying dearly for it, for quite a few years now. ) Some of the pickpocketing scenes, and the later full-bore action stuff, are almost up to Hung's mature standard (Eastern Condors), and for a supposed comedy the movie is often startlingly vicious. For completists only. -David Chute.
