Review Democracia Indigena / hed_asins set:Democracia Indigena examines the rights revolution of Indian Mexico through the municipal elections in Huehuetla, Puebla - the same Totonac Indian community featured in "The Tree of Life" and "The Tree of Knowledge". In 1989, the Huehuetla Totonacs formed the Organizacion Independiente Totonaca (OIT), and joined in an electoral alliance with the Partido de la Revolucion Democratica to sweep the municipal elections. During the following nine years, the OIT and PRD carried out a non-violent revolution. The visible signs of this Totonac renaissance are the health posts, schools, drinking water, and electricity available to everyone for the first time. But the real change is in the new self-confidence and pride of the Totonacs themselves. Democracia Indigena follows Cruz Garcia, an "expatriate" Totonac, as he examines the changes in his homeland. Opening with the PRD electoral campaign, Cruz meets with the Totonac mayor and council, , visits rural projects, talks with his Totonac family and neighbors, as well as the parish priest and the mestizo mayoral candidate of the opposition PRI. With Cruz, we watch the voting, the vote counting, and the stunning 3 am victory celebration. The film concludes with an examination of the strengths and weaknesses of this powerful example of democracy in action. Spanish & Totonac with English subtitles.

Review GOOGOOSH: Iran's Daughter:Atash Productions is proud to present GOOGOOSH: Iran's Daughter, the first feature-length documentary film about Iran's legendary pop diva: GOOGOOSH! Googoosh was Iran's most famous and beloved pop singer until the 1979 Islamic Revolution silenced her and all female vocalists, branding them as "temptresses" and forbidding them to sing publicly in the presence of men or to make recordings. Two years in the making, this impressionistic documentary film offers a unique look at Iranian culture and modern history through the life of this pop-cultural phenomenon. From her beginnings as a little girl compelled to assist her father in his nightclub act, through child stardom, to a full-fledged adult career of unprecedented scope, silence and resurgence; GOOGOOSH: Iran's Daughter uses interviews, historical analysis, and striking performance footage to locate the singer/actress in the midst of Iran's political, social, and cultural transformation. ** Winner - Gold Merit Award (Vancouver Iranian FF) ** Screened at the Gene Siskel Film Center, Chicago ** Official Selection (5th Exile Film Festival, Sweden).

Review Himmo, King of Jerusalem:Adapted from Yoram Kaniuk's best-selling novel, this deeply moving love story takes place during the 1948 siege of Jerusalem in an ancient monastery which has been temporarily converted into a military hospital. Bereaved at the loss of her own love in the war, young and beautiful volunteer nurse Hamutal (Alona Kimhi) is drawn to the enigmatic Himmo, a mortally wounded and mutilated soldier who cannot speak or move. The doomed relationship between Hamutal and Himmo becomes a source of bitter conflict among the struggling, battle-scarred patients. In the tradition of "The English Patient" and "Johnny Got His Gun", this is a dark and profoundly tragic study of war, suffering, love and redemption.

Review Phedre (1968-France) / France:COLOR. With MARIE BELL, based on the play by RACINE. "To see Marie Bell in Phedre is a unique opportunity to experience fully what is French Genius. " - Andre Malraux. According to Greek legend, Theseus returned from war with the Minoans on Crete to become king of Athens and took Phedre, the daughter of the vanquished King Minos to be his wife. Phedre fell in love with the Kings son, Hippolyte, but he did not return the love, preferring one his own age. Phedre caused her husband, the King, to be wrongly jealous of his son and prayed to Neptune to destroy him. When Hippolyte was in fact killed after fighting a sea monster, Phedre killed herself in remorse. Starting with this basic legend, Jean Racine, the dramatist considered "the most French of French writers," adapted the story for the stage in 1677. His pure Alexandrine verse, realistically portraying the characters, has led to a continuing appreciation of his works. [+]
Marie Bell, thought of so highly by the contemporary French author and statesman Malraux, possesses a classic background in keeping with the purity of the legend and tradition of the French adaptation. A member of the Comdie Franaise since 1928, she began her film career in 1924 and was a remarkably well-preserved 68 years old when she undertook the portrayal of this tragic figure. Her decoration for valor in the French Underground during the war was the Legion of Honor, awarded by General DeGaulle himself. Phedre therefore, comes with a French pedigree as authentic as the Eiffel Tower. A powerful film of human emotion in the style of a classic Greek tragedy. Cinema for the intellect indeed. In French with English subtitles. 93 minutes.

Review Atlantis & Other New York Tales: Samuel R. Delany Reads at the Judson Church:Delany (Chip to his many friends) performs (rather than reads) portions of five books. Whether autobiography or fiction, these works all share a voice that suggests direct experience, accessible yet sharply focused. All take New York as their location and the cultural signs of race, class and gender as their subject. usually from a gay and decidedly sexual point of view. Atlantis also includes segments of interviews with Chip that punctuate and expand upon his performance. The readings and interviews range from the Jewel Box Revue (a touring transvestite show of the 50's & 60's), his uncles's tobacco picking in 1920's Connecticut, anonymous sex in New York's lost pleasure districts, and finally, to public sex with a homeless man. Somehow, Mr. Delany makes even the "hard stuff" fascinating, humorous, and shockingly easy to enjoy.
