Review Devil In the Flesh (1946-France):With MICHELINE PRESLE, GERARD PHILIPE. Directed by CLAUDE AUTANT LARA. Back in the 1950s, Gerard Philipe was one of the hottest actors in French cinema. Sadly, he was soon dead of a heart attack at the age of 36. Nonetheless, his talent shines through brightly in this, the film which made him an international star. The time is the last days of World War I and Philipe plays Francois, a high school student whose interests are way beyond girls his own age. Francois becomes instantly smitten with Martha, an older woman who arrives in town to assist her mother as a nurse at the hospital which is next door to Francois school. Soldiers who have been wounded in battle are brought to this hospital directly from the front. As Francois and his classmates observe them, they are well aware that if the war continues, they too will soon be finding themselves among the wounded and the dead. At the same time, Francois zealously pursues the sensitive and tenderhearted Martha, even though she is engaged to marry a soldier. [+]The boy does not let up even after Martha marries her fiancŽ and he returns to battle. The story follows the evolving relationship between Francois and Martha and the result is an impassioned and deeply felt love story, a classic tale of tangled emotions and heartbreak. Because they place their feelings above all else, are Francois and Martha weak and selfish? Or should they be commended for attempting to cling to love in time of war and chaos? You decide. The story was re-made in 1987 as an X-rated, non-pornographic film, but was not nearly as moving as this version. Look for JACQUES TATI in a bit part as a soldier! One of the many highlights is a sensuous love scene by a fireplace, which director Claude Autant Lara partially repeats near the films finale - but for an entirely different effect! Review The Little World of Don Camillo:1951-FRANCE-ITALY With FERNANDEL, GINO CERVI. Narrated by ORSON WELLES. This comic fable, which spotlights the talents of the incomparable Fernandel, was certainly topical back in 1951 - and decades later the film remains just as fresh, funny and relevant as a mirror of the human condition. Fernandel is cast as the title character, a priest who ministers to the populace in a small, poor Northern Italian town. The crux of the scenario details Don Camillos outrage when the Communists are elected to office, as well as his various escapades when he tangles with the hamlets new mayor, a flag-waver whos committed to his cause. While they are reluctant to admit it, both men do remain fond of each other. Will they come together to help a desperate young couple, the offspring of feuding families, who have fallen in love? The film works best, however, as a satire of religion and politics, with Fernandel effortlessly stealing the show with his crafty performance. Orson Welles narrates, and also provides the voice of God - with whom Don Camillo occasionally holds conversations. Dubbed in English. 106 minutes.

Review Potters at Work:Koshibara Village, Japan, Firing the Kiln: An ancient style brick kiln is being walled up at night in Koishibara Village. Pots are seen standing its red flames, baking. (Filmed at the workshop of Kumao Ohta, Koishibara, Fukuoka, Prefecture,Japan. Onda, a neighbouring village, Digging and preparing the clay: In the neighbouring village of Onda, one woman scoops off water from a clay settling tank, while another lifts out heavy wet handfuls of clay. A handmade machine pounds clay powder shovelled under its beak-like head by an old man. It is propelled by the weight of running water at its feet and moves in the inexorable rhythm of all the film's component parts. These machines are called kara-usu and are now unique to Onda. (Filmed at Onda, Oita Prefecture) The Sakamoto family, Teaching the craft: A man and his son work side by side fashioning pots. The man's wife brings them fresh clay. Words are heard as we realize the son is learning his father's craft. [+]For every pot the son makes, the father has made three or more. (Filmed at the workshop of Shigeki Sakamoto in Onda) Koishibara, the Ohta family, early morning, The pots: Kumao Ohta is working with his sons and apprentices fashioning pots. Endless repetitions of hand movements at the wheels display the control and skill of the workers. Pots are placed in the yard to dry in the sun. An abrupt shower forces the potters indoors.
