Review Blood Of the Beasts (Le Sang Des Betes):

(1949-France). Directed by GEORGES FRANJU. This film is a masterpiece, a groundbreaking, landmark documentary, as well as the film which established its creator, Georges Franju, as one of the most formidable and influential of 1950s French filmmakers. It opens with a view of a Paris suburb that is peaceful, ordinary, comfortably familiar. Children play, lovers kiss: then, Franju switches to a slaughterhouse, where workers routinely - and graphically - transform live animals into disemboweled carcasses in an orgy of carnage and blood. On one level, these images alone make the film as jarring as the most effective horror thriller. At the same time, they compel us to confront the realities of the world in which we live: a world that is filled with everyday horror and pain. Furthermore, according to Franju, some of this may even be justified: without the ritual of the slaughterhouse, after all, how could we enjoy the meat products that we find so neatly, conveniently packaged and displayed at the supermarket? Critics the world over have hailed Blood Of The Beasts. The film contains "single frames that are among the most disturbing in the cinema" (David Thomson). It is a "ferociously lyric outburst of rage" (Tom Milne) and "is one of the most poetic postwar documentaries, full of strangely surrealistic touches" (Georges Sadoud). [+]
According to Jean Cocteau, the film "proved that the cinema is a vehicle for realism and lyricism. " In French, with English subtitles. 22 minutes.

Review The Red and The Black (Le Rouge Et Le Noir):

(1954-France-Italy). COLOR. With DANIELLE DARRIEUX, GERARD PHILIPE, ANTONELLA LUALDI. Directed by CLAUDE AUTANT-LARA. Based on the novel by STENDAHL. A lavish and vivid filming of Stendahls classic story of passion, ambition and conflict in 1830 France. This is the saga of Julien Sorel, a man of humble birth. From the outset of his life, he has been unwilling to accept his place in the world. The opportunistic Sorel remains steadfastly determined to rise above his origins and enter what the upper classes call "society. " At the outset of the story he is on trial for his life. [+]
How did this come to be? As Sorel awaits his fate, he thinks of his past. The scenario goes on to chart his roots as a laborers son and the manner in which he loses his soul while attempting to make a place for himself in a world governed by the elitist supporters of absolute monarchy. Stendahls point is to take cynical jabs at the bourgeoisie, and director Claude Autant-Lara serves the material well. The dashingly handsome French film star Gerard Philipe will make female hearts swoon as Sorel while Danielle Darrieux and Antonella Lualdi are radiant in their respective roles as a mayors wife and a marquis daughter: two women who impact immeasurably on Sores life. In French with English subtitles. 136 minutes.

Review Phedre (1968-France) / France:

COLOR. With MARIE BELL, based on the play by RACINE. "To see Marie Bell in Phedre is a unique opportunity to experience fully what is French Genius. " - Andre Malraux. According to Greek legend, Theseus returned from war with the Minoans on Crete to become king of Athens and took Phedre, the daughter of the vanquished King Minos to be his wife. Phedre fell in love with the Kings son, Hippolyte, but he did not return the love, preferring one his own age. Phedre caused her husband, the King, to be wrongly jealous of his son and prayed to Neptune to destroy him. When Hippolyte was in fact killed after fighting a sea monster, Phedre killed herself in remorse. Starting with this basic legend, Jean Racine, the dramatist considered "the most French of French writers," adapted the story for the stage in 1677. His pure Alexandrine verse, realistically portraying the characters, has led to a continuing appreciation of his works. [+]
Marie Bell, thought of so highly by the contemporary French author and statesman Malraux, possesses a classic background in keeping with the purity of the legend and tradition of the French adaptation. A member of the ComŽdie Franaise since 1928, she began her film career in 1924 and was a remarkably well-preserved 68 years old when she undertook the portrayal of this tragic figure. Her decoration for valor in the French Underground during the war was the Legion of Honor, awarded by General DeGaulle himself. Phedre therefore, comes with a French pedigree as authentic as the Eiffel Tower. A powerful film of human emotion in the style of a classic Greek tragedy. Cinema for the intellect indeed. In French with English subtitles. 93 minutes.

Review The Little World of Don Camillo:

1951-FRANCE-ITALY With FERNANDEL, GINO CERVI. Narrated by ORSON WELLES. This comic fable, which spotlights the talents of the incomparable Fernandel, was certainly topical back in 1951 - and decades later the film remains just as fresh, funny and relevant as a mirror of the human condition. Fernandel is cast as the title character, a priest who ministers to the populace in a small, poor Northern Italian town. The crux of the scenario details Don Camillos outrage when the Communists are elected to office, as well as his various escapades when he tangles with the hamlets new mayor, a flag-waver whos committed to his cause. While they are reluctant to admit it, both men do remain fond of each other. Will they come together to help a desperate young couple, the offspring of feuding families, who have fallen in love? The film works best, however, as a satire of religion and politics, with Fernandel effortlessly stealing the show with his crafty performance. Orson Welles narrates, and also provides the voice of God - with whom Don Camillo occasionally holds conversations. Dubbed in English. 106 minutes.

Review Himmo, King of Jerusalem:

Adapted from Yoram Kaniuk's best-selling novel, this deeply moving love story takes place during the 1948 siege of Jerusalem in an ancient monastery which has been temporarily converted into a military hospital. Bereaved at the loss of her own love in the war, young and beautiful volunteer nurse Hamutal (Alona Kimhi) is drawn to the enigmatic Himmo, a mortally wounded and mutilated soldier who cannot speak or move. The doomed relationship between Hamutal and Himmo becomes a source of bitter conflict among the struggling, battle-scarred patients. In the tradition of "The English Patient" and "Johnny Got His Gun", this is a dark and profoundly tragic study of war, suffering, love and redemption.
