Review The Leach Pottery, St.Ives, Cornwall England 1952:Bernard Leach founded The Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall, England in 1920, where he later wrote his classic; A POTTER'S BOOK. The Leach Pottery, high on a hill overlooking the charming artist's colony of St. Ives, soon began welcoming visitors from around the world to view it's unique experiment in reviving hand-crafted pottery, then regarded as doomed to extinction. In 1952, as The Leach Pottery was acheiving international renown, members of the local photography club set out to show the process of creating pottery by producing this silent film. The resulting film is a charming presentation of the daily activities at The Leach Pottery. We witness various stages of creation of some of the Pottery's famed standard ware, and then see Bernard Leach himself designing and completing one of his "willow" jars. Although there are several professional TV documentaries on The Leach Pottery, this locally- made amateur film, now restored and released for the first time on video with the cooperation of the late Janet Darnell Leach, provides an especially intimate look at The Leach Pottery.

Review In Concert (Part 2) Ashwin Batish-Sitar, Zakir Hussain-Tabla / Batish:1. Tabla Solo-Rupak Taal (20:00) 2. Raga Sundar Kauns (40:00) Alap; Gat in slow Tintal; Gat in fast Ektal This tape starts with a tabla solo by Zakir in Rupak Tal of 7 beats followed by three movements in raga Sundar Kauns by Ashwin with accompaniment by Zakir on the tabla. Ashwin and Zakir's friendship goes back to when their fathers, Pandit S. D. Batish and Ustad Alla Rakha, used to perform together since 1940. It was only natural for the two sons to meet. This is the second half of a concert produced by the Batish Institute of Music and Fine Arts and held at the performing Arts Theatre, University of California, Santa Cruz. Review Mashiko Village Pottery, Japan 1937:Several years before his death the renowned British potter Bernard Leach gave several rare films on Japan to Canadian film maker Marty Gross. Produced by a pre-war cultural organization in Japan, the film is a work of rare clarity and beauty which follows an entire pottery making cycle as performed in that village for centuries. Mashiko ceramic manufacture is said to date back to 1853, when a potter from a neighbouring village came as an adopted son to a Mashiko farming family. The village later became one of the most prolific producers of utilitarian ware for Tokyo; principally jars, mortars, and teapots.
