Review Masters of Russian Animation: Andrei Khrjanovsky &Alfred Schnittke:Following the artistic revolution created at Soyuzmultfilm by Fyodor Khitruk, a new school of Russian animation directors emerged. Among them was Khrjanovsky - an intellectual and connoisseur of world art, utterly ireverent of the animation industry's previous artistic and literary constraints. His films are rich in symbolism and characterized by artistic integrity and fresh dramatic structure. Khrjanovsky was the first animation director to work with Schnittke, one of contemporary Russia's most important composers. Schnittke supported himself for more than a decade writing scores for feature films. He also composed the music for more than half of Khrjanovsky's films. Some of their unique collaborations are represented here, as well as two films made by Khrjanovsky but scored by other composers, and Ballerina on a Boat, the masterful animated ballet Schnittke scored for the legendary Lev Atamanov. Includes: THERE LIVED KOZYAVIN (1966) Directorial debut of Khrjanovsky. Music by G. Lukianov. [+]

Review Daughters of Afghanistan / Choices, Inc.:When the hated Taliban were ousted, Afghan women felt their daily nightmare was over. They hoped to reclaim the future for their daughters despite isolation at the hands of the international community. But generations of neglect and second-class status don't vanish with the current political winds. Journalist Sally Armstrong exposes the ongoing struggles of women in modern Afghanistan by following the lives of five courageous women from diverse backgrounds: Dr. Sima Simar, a woman who ignored death threats and defied edicts of the Taliban by providing healthcare and education to women, and became briefly, Deputy Prime Minister in the transitional government; Soghra, who lost everything to the Taliban, now struggling to feed and clothe her five children; Hamida, a school principal determined to provide education to her female students; Camellah, an Afghan housewife living in a country whose laws make her a virtual sex slave to her husband; and Lima, a young girl whose childhood has been lost to war.

Review The War Game (1966-England) / BBC:In the mid-'60s, the BBC funded a documentary on how World War III would affect Britain. But the film director Peter Watkins gave them was never aired, and the BBC released a statement saying it was "too horrifying" for television. Despite this, it won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, and hit worldwide theatrical release in the coming years. Even today, it has a shocking gravity that is undiminished by time. Using County Kent as the backdrop, a highly effective newsreel style takes the viewer on the Cold War prelude, the attack itself (striking military targets many miles away), and the desperate anarchy that ensues. Subtlety isn't Watkins's suit (perhaps the BBC objected to the film's blunt antiestablishment politics as much as anything), but by breaking taboos such as showing graphic carnage and plausibly depicting the brutal postnuclear martial law, The War Game is a monumental predecessor to The Day After and Testament. -Alan E. Rapp Directed, produced and scripted by PETER WATKINS. This important film is an original and daring, sobering and stunning "staged documentary" which graphically brings home the stark reality of nuclear war. In so doing, it remains as timely today as when it was first seen. [+]
Watkins, who began his career in the 1950s as an assistant producer of television commercials, vividly portrays the effect of nuclear war by combining cleverly filmed simulated newsreels and interviews with a take-no-sides narration. In his scenario, theres a "Berlin crisis," the result of which is an exchange of nuclear warheads between the United States and the Soviet Union. One bomb lands 27 miles from the English city of Kent (where the film was shot on location). In the wake of this disaster, homes are destroyed; people are killed or maimed; the medical establishment is unable to cope with the crisis; looters run rampant and anarchy becomes the order of the day. Interspersed with this footage are interviews with religious and political figures, who comment on the hows and whys of nuclear war. The film was made by the British Broadcasting Corporation and the British Film Institute; it was supposed to be screened on British television, but was not shown because the BBC deemed it "unsuitable" for home viewing. Eventually, it was released to theaters and it went on to earn a most deserved Best Documentary Academy Award. 48 minutes.

Review Bread, Love and Dreams (1954-Italy):With VITTORIO DE SICA, GINA LOLLOBRIGIDA, MARISA MERLINI, ROBERTO RISSO. "Performances Under the Supervision of VITTORIO DE SICA. " Despite its all-encompassing title, the primary focus of this simple, hearty comedy is love and the art of seduction. De Sica, one of ltalys most respected filmmakers who also enjoyed a career in front of the camera, stars as The Marshal: a dapper, middle-aged bachelor whos the new chief of a six-man police unit in a small, picturesque mountain village. Not much happens here; in fact, the town residents have so little to do that theyve become obsessed with gossiping and becoming involved in each others business. So theres much ado when their new top cop commences to flirt with, and then ardently pursue, the towns sexiest - and most tempestuous and devilish young maiden, who is most appropriately known as "Frisky. " The Marshal must be ever so careful as he does so, because of his age and position in the community. De Sica plays him masterfully, in a performance that is first a series of subtle, artfully maneuvered glances, smiles and raised eyebrows, then a caricature of a desperate, longing suitor. Hes matched by Lollobrigida, a movie goddess who was capable of offering carefully considered, well-defined characterizations. Her "Frisky" is more than just a cardboard sex object. [+]
La Lollo offers a piercing performance as she mimics the various townsmen who paw at her and deflects the Marshals passes, reminding one and all with her body language that she, and not the Marshal, or any man, is the one with the true power when it comes to matters of the heart. The stars are surrounded by a fine supporting cast, notably Roberto Risso as the shy young policeman who happens to be the object of Friskys affection and Marisa Merlini as a midwife who, it would seem, is a more appropriate romantic partner for the Marshal. Dubbed in English. 91 minutes.
