Classroom-friendly, The Oregon Trail is an easy-to-digest introduction to this historic route, to those who blazed and followed it, and to its pivotal impact on the shape of North America. Although the two-hour series is inefficiently divided between four separate cassettes, each half-hour program is conveniently divided into short two- to four-minute chapters, each focusing on a specific aspect of the journey, perfect for fourth- to eighth-grade classroom viewing and discussion. Excerpts from men and women's diaries, archival photos, and reenactments help the viewer feel what life must have been like on the trail, capturing the fear, heartbreak, and breathtaking sights early pioneers experienced. The videos dispel myths of Native American violence, explaining that the Cheyenne and Pawnee people were far more likely to offer assistance or trade with the pioneers than to attack them. The series avoids in-depth discussion of politics or placing the trail in a larger historical context, focusing instead on the elements that will be most interesting to students: Did more pioneers die from gunshot wounds or being run over by wagon wheels? Why were oxen better than horses? Why did kids walk instead of ride in the wagons? Bird By Bird With Annie is a portrait of the best selling author and laugh out- loud funny humorist Anne Lamott (Traveling Mercies, Bird By Bird, Operating Instructions, Crooked Little Heart). It is the moving story of a survivor - a recovering addict and alcoholic and a single mother who is both a born again Christian and a liberal activist. The film, a year in the life of the writer, focuses on her gift at de-mystifying the creative process, the people that inform her life and writing, and the beauty of language and the written arts. It touches upon concerns of universal interest - loss, alienation, loneliness, faith, the meaning of life and the perhaps less weighty concerns of unfirm thighs, difficult hair and retail therapy. Annie likes to pass on the "secret of life" that she found written on a computer terminal bearing a picture of Koko the gorilla: "The law of the American jungle: Remain calm and share your bananas. " The film has been submitted to festivals and distributed to select art house movie theaters in major cities and theaters in cultural centers, such as the Northwest Film Center and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The film will broadcast on public television and is available to schools, universities and lib raries. The director Freida Lee Mock heard Anne Lamott speak for the first time at the Sun Valley Writers' Conference in Idaho in l996. She was captivated by Anne's ideas, humor, honesty, and charismatic way of speaking and felt she would be a perfect subject for a film. Filming took place over a year and a half in the San Francisco Bay area, Idaho and Los Angeles. [+]
The film, supported by grants and donations from foundations and individuals, was completed late l998. Anne Lamott is your run-of-the-mill recovering alcoholic and drug addict, born-again Christian, left-wing liberal, and single mother who just so happens to have written New York Times-bestselling books, including the inspiring writing guide Bird by Bird. Very ordinary. This hour-long video follows Lamott around for a year as she gives readings, raises her son, and participates in church. Topics great and small are covered, from the difficulty in doing anything with her kinky hair and how she became the class clown to her nightly drinking and the decision whether to have her baby or terminate the pregnancy. Along the way she dispenses writing tips, and if you're struggling with your own work, she is immensely comforting (she tells us of the difficult time she had working during the O. J. Simpson trial-she kept popping upstairs to see what was happening on TV). Funny and personable, Lamott is a wonderful subject for a documentary. -Jenny Brown.

Ledward Kaapana is widely acknowledged to be one of the most exciting and accomplished players in ki ho'alu, or slack key guitar style. Playing in open-chord and other alternate tunings, Led's two-finger picking and alternating bass is reminiscent of the great blues and country guitarists, but with the licks and harmonies typical of Hawaiian traditional music. His playing is loose and improvisational, and his repertoire encompasses both quiet, beautiful melodies and rip-roaring show-stoppers with lightning-fast licks and fancy picking. The beauty of the slack key style is that it's made up of simple chords and melodies, but an accomplished player then builds up improvised variations using interchangable licks and turnarounds similar to those in blues guitar. Ledward provides all the elements for making arrangements in this style, showing how he acheives the special sounds (damping, bass runs, hammers, pull-offs, trills, and other ornaments) that make each tune come alive. Led's lesson starts in "taro patch" (open G) tuning with a lovely original piece that he calls "Slack Key Lullabye. " As with each tune on this video, he breaks it down in detail, showing the basic melody, then adding harmony lines, bass rhythm and the embellishments that create the complete arrangement. He goes on to demonstrate numerous examples of Hawaiian-style turnarounds, as well as complete instrumentals such as "Kuu Ipo Onaona," "E Lili'u E," and, switching to "wahine" tuning (DGDF#BD), the spectacular "Slack Key Medley. " With its wide range of tunes and techniques, this lesson will satisfy players who are novices in the slack key style, as well as those who consider themselves advanced players. Ledward has given us something for everyone, and this video lesson will give you much to work.
