Review Letters From My Windmill (1954-France):

Directed and written by MARCEL PAGNOL. English subtitles co-written by PRESTON STURGES. The Provence region of southern France was dear to the heart of playwright/screenwriter/director Marcel Pagnol. He was a native of the area and he infused much of his work with the rustic flavor and colorful character of Provence and its people. In this evocative three-part film, Pagnol interweaves sweetly winning stories that are told by one Alphonse Daudet, a Parisian author who comes to visit a friend in Provence and eventually plans to "write little pieces about (the) countryside for the Paris papers. " The first story is titled "The Three Low Masses. " It is Christmas Eve, and a chap named Garrigou has gotten into a card game with the Devil. Of course he has lost, and the Devil has taken over poor Garrigous body and is intent on disrupting the evenings religious service. A comic highlight: the Reverend Fathers farcical obsession with the feast he will be dining on after presiding over the title masses. Next, comes "The Elixir Of Father Gaucher. [+]
" It is the story of a group of priests and how they, too, are faced with temptation. It seems that the title characters recently deceased Aunt Begonia had created a special drink that is alcoholic in nature. Can a rationalization be made for its use as a tonic? What will happen when the priests begin manufacturing it? The last story is "The Secret Of Master Cornille. " The title character is an elderly miller who, for years, has been able to grind tremendous amounts of wheat into flour. The locals suspect Master Cornille of being the perpetrator of illegal activity. The millers sweet and beautiful granddaughter innocently reveals the method behind his madness. This delightful film was shot on location in Pagnols beloved Provence. In French with English subtitles. 134 minutes.

Review Goodbye 20th Century / Sub Rosa Studios:

"GOODBYE 20th CENTURY" unfolds during three periods of time - it begins in post-apocalyptic 2019, continues 100 years earlier, and ends on December 31st, 1999, the last night of our time. It is 2019, after global destruction and descent into savagery. The immortal Kuzman, overburdened by the sins of incestuous love, tries to discover his destiny in order to learn how to die. As he enters the whirling cycles of time, we discover the blasphemy of our century - and how it is to close its' circle. The merry Santa Claus 2000, whose rage destroys our world, who condemns those still alive to immortal life, will engulf us all into oblivion. This is a film of a generation which has grown up and lives at the threshold of a war that neither begins nor ends. [+]
Directed by Aleksander Popovski and Darko Mitrevski from their own compilation of childhood myths, and set amidst the confusing background of time turmoil, mixed styles, opulent imagery and deliberate quotations, "GOODBYE 20th CENTURY" is a visionary tale which condemns the decayed century to a very scary death.

Review Dr. Jack / Unknown Video:

One of Harold Lloyd's less-familiar features, this is a charming comedy about a small-town doctor who prescribes common sense and good humor for his patients. He takes on the case of the "Sick Little Well Girl," who's been needlessly kept as an invalid by her wealthy family. Dr. Jack revives her spirits with a healthy dose of excitement in the form of an escaped maniac loose in the house at midnight. actually the doctor in disguise. Mildred Davis and "Our Gang's" Mickey Daniels are featured. Included as a bonus is Lloyd's two-reel comedy short, Number, Please? (1920). Both films are presented complete, with original organ scores by Bob Vaughn. [+]
The title character of Dr. Jack is a small-town physician (Harold Lloyd) with a knack for nonmedical solutions-he cures one patient by giving him a saxophone, another with boxing lessons. When he tricks a big-city lawyer into visiting his sweet old mother and lifting her depression, the lawyer asks the good doctor to visit the daughter of an old and wealthy friend, a young girl whose malady is unspecified but provides a substantial income to a quack named Dr. von Saulsbourg. Naturally, when Dr. Jack and the girl meet, romantic sparks fly; but when they accidentally kiss, the girl's shocked father insists that Jack leave in the morning. With only one night to rescue his beloved from von Saulsbourg's clutches, Jack realizes that what she needs more than anything else is excitement-and to provide it, he disguises himself as an escaped convict, leading the household on a topsy-turvy chase through the mansion. Harold Lloyd doesn't have the balletic grace of Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton, but he's got his own understated charm and a knack for witty, inventive stunts. The accompanying short ("Number, Please?") may be even more fun than the main feature; Lloyd plays a brokenhearted guy trying to forget his troubles in an amusement park, where he runs into his former sweetheart and her new beau. Finding the girl's lost dog and stolen purse seems simple enough, but in Lloyd's world the simplest things produce the most astonishing complications. A delightful snippet of silent comedy. -Bret Fetzer.

Review Pat Paulsen For President:

This one hour presidential Special aired on CBS in October 1968. A take-off on all presidential campaigns, it details Pat Paulsen's early denials of political ambition to his barnstorming antics across the country. A satirical look at politics, its humor comes from its closeness to actual campaigns. As Pat says, "Just change a few names and the same thing is going on today. " Narrated by Henry Fonda, this highly acclaimed TV show will keep you laughing. The special was one of three American TV shows taken by a Russian delegation back to Russia in 1972. Nobody knows why, but Pat assumes this contributed to the fall of Communism.
