Review Rabbit Ears - How the Rhino Got His Skin/How the Camel Got His Hump / Rabbit Ears:Before Jack Nicholson utters word one of his unflappable, ultracool narration to How the Rhino Got His Skin & How the Camel Got His Hump, what's clear is that quality viewing lies ahead. The two fables comprising this 30-minute video storybook are authored by Rudyard Kipling, and leading up to them over the opening credits are the unmistakable chirps and melodic murmurs of Bobby McFerrin, who keeps up his wordless, joyful rants throughout both tales, making the world feel smaller and the stories-not your average fluffy, feel-good kids' fare-seem less dour. In the first, a hapless Parsee man somewhere on the Red Sea suffers the injustice of having his just-baked cake gobbled up by an ill-mannered rhino. To retaliate, he spreads itch-inducing crumbs and currants on the "piggy-eyed" beast's skin while he's bathing (this being Kipling's imagination, animals sometimes shed their skins to cool off), thus causing him to rub savagely against a tree for relief. The relentless rubbing leads to the formerly smooth-skinned rhino's wrinkling, which, the tone of this story suggests, serves him right. In the second tale, a camel gets his just desserts: It's the beginning of time, and everyone in the desert is hard at work getting the world in order. Everyone, that is, except the inexcusably idle camel, who sits lethargically chewing milkweed. His standard answer to those who implore him to move it (an ox, a dog, and a horse) is "HUMPH!"-an unsatisfactory response that spurs the "head man in charge of the desert" to deform him with the protuberances that all of camelkind sports today. Tim Raglin's sharply defined yet sandy-soft drawings capture each creature's temperament with exactitude, all the while portraying exotic, geographically and historically correct details such as the "Oriental splendor" of the Parsee man's hat gorgeously. This film earns a spot among the short shelf of well-rounded kids' titles: It's as stunning to watch as it is enchanting to listen to. [+]

Review Franklin - Franklin's Halloween / Nickelodeon Network:Whenever a dilemma comes to their cartoon forest, sensible, unassuming little Franklin puts his best kelly-green foot forward and helps his fellow animal friends forge ahead. It's not that the guileless gem of a young turtle automatically knows the grown-up way to extricate himself from a pickle; instead, he methodically sizes up sticky situations (a staple in this kindhearted, preschool-appropriate series) and puts morals and winning judgment to work. Such is the case in Franklin's Halloween, the title tale in this two-episode, 25-minute video. Franklin and his friends Goose, Fox, Bear, and Beaver are fully costumed and fighting off goose bumps-who'll find the gumption to go into Mr. Mole's haunted house first? Usually it's brave Bear, but this year he's battling the flu. That leaves Franklin, who's no scaredy cat, to face his fears. In the second episode, "Franklin's Fort," the intrepid turtle is forced to come out of his shell when his friends build the ultimate playhouse. The fort is high in the boughs of a tree, but Franklin prefers to keep his feet on the ground. There's lots of stammering and skirting the issue at first, but then Franklin's mom stirs a memory for him: Franklin rode his bike "when he was ready and not before," and the same strategy seems likely to one day send him up the scary tree-house ladder. The simple-to-follow story lines of this gentle series expertly steady the scattershot thoughts of kids 5 and younger. [+]
That they also train very young children's focus on problem solving is a bonus that ought to turn scores of caregivers into instant Franklin fans. -Tammy La Gorce.

Review Silent Night / Sony Pictures:This is a nicely animated musical that's loosely based on the true story of the composition of "Silent Night" in 1818 by Father Joseph Mohr and Choirmaster Franz Gruber. It's Christmas Eve and mouse-icians Buster and Chauncey are on their way to the town of Oberndorf to sing for the Queen. The whole town is a flutter with preparations, so imagine Burghermeister Huffenmeir's distress when the Duke of Raoche and his niece Lady Gretchen arrive a day early. Also newly arrived is Christina, an orphan girl on her way to Vienna in hopes of finding her aunt and uncle. When the Oberndorf treasure is found missing, all clues point to Christina, who steadfastly denies the charge. Father Joseph believes the girl, but it's up to Chauncey and Buster to prove her innocence and apprehend the real thieves. In the end, the Christmas celebration with the Queen is not as lavish as originally planned but proves much more meaningful. The town discovers that the true meaning of Christmas is not fame or fortune but friendship, sharing, and giving, and they celebrate their new wisdom by singing "Silent Night," a Christmas song composed by Father Joseph and Franz on that tumultuous Christmas Eve. This musical is full of compelling songs written by such great musical composers as Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens, Barry Harman, and Keith Herrmann. Voice talents Phil Hartman, Marie Osmond, and Tom Arnold add much to an already great production. [+]

Review Little Bill - Me and My Family / Paramount:Gap-toothed 5-year-old Little Bill radiates with the sunny realism of his creator, Bill Cosby, but a Fat Albert redux this series is not. For starters, pull the strings on each episode's tidy package and you'll find more family than friends. Little Bill's New York apartment, not the local junkyard, is the nexus of his universe and where he works the kinks out of his kindergartner's world alongside his parents, older sister and brother, and the improbably named and ingenious Alice the Great, his great-grandmother. Inside, there's a whole lot of togetherness going on: Me and My Family's four episodes encapsulate a crowded car ride to Super Family Fun Land (a two-parter), the forming of a neighborhood cleanup committee tasked with clearing a trash-strewn lot, and the dusting off of a time-honored family tradition as Alice the Great breaks out her magic quilt to keep the bogeyman at bay. The look of this series also is something of a novelty-it shares the Colorformish quality of its sister Nick Jr. series Blue's Clues, an effect that adds to its producers' keep-it-real commitment. That said, anybody intimate enough with the realness of inner-city strife may not be blamed for criticizing the sedateness of this show. Otherwise, the youngster himself isn't the only likable part of Little Bill. This being a Cosby creation, there's music-vintage-sounding jazz melodies thread through each story, guaranteeing a finger-snapping good time for parents as well as their more preoccupied preschoolers. -Tammy La Gorce.
