Review Puss'n Boots - Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child / Hbo Home Video:A Mother Goose classic is retold with a Polynesian theme. A cat is shipwrecked on a mice-infested island, but this is one talking feline with a taste for twisting the truth, not rodents. He talks his new owner into making him a pair of boots in return for fame and fortune. When the owner's father dies, he leaves the plantation to the older brother and the crop to the middle brother, while the youngest brother gets Puss. Puss, ever the player, connives, manipulates, and flat-out lies to a neighboring island king and princess to get his owner noticed. But when the owner finds out about all the untruths, he sets the record straight, much to the dismay of Puss. The king and his daughter appreciate the owner's honesty, and the owner ends up engaged to the princess, proving that honesty is the best policy. Peppered with modern slang and humor, this version of Puss in Boots is very entertaining. Narrated by Robert Guillaume and starring David Hyde-Pierce as Puss, this HBO production is good for children 3 and older, but is one the whole family will enjoy. -Peggy Maltby-Etra.

Review The Incredible Hulk - Origin of the Hulk & The Power of Doctor Banner / Walt Disney Video:There was some amazing, classic animation done for superhero cartoons done as far back as Max & Dave Fleisher's Superman series of the early 1940s (echoes of which can be found in Batman: The Animated Series). Those were done for the big screen; by the mid-1960s, superhero cartoons were being brought to television, and some of Marvel Comics' biggest heroes-Captain America, Spider-Man, Thor, and the Incredible Hulk-were the stars. Unfortunately, television didn't have much in terms of cachet-or production values-at the time, and all four heroes suffer for it. The Hulk gets short shrift here; the interesting thing about the character has always been twofold: the misunderstood misfit trying to make a quiet life for himself, and the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde duality of the Hulk and his alter ego, Dr. Bruce Banner. On the two episodes here-"The Power of Dr. Banner" and "The Origin of the Hulk"-the animation is minimal and barely serves to capture a single facet of either character's personality. It looks as if only a couple dozen pictures of the main characters were drawn; for the most part, this is a series of stationary illustrations with voiceovers and plenty of narration. [+]

Review Silent Night / Sony Pictures:This is a nicely animated musical that's loosely based on the true story of the composition of "Silent Night" in 1818 by Father Joseph Mohr and Choirmaster Franz Gruber. It's Christmas Eve and mouse-icians Buster and Chauncey are on their way to the town of Oberndorf to sing for the Queen. The whole town is a flutter with preparations, so imagine Burghermeister Huffenmeir's distress when the Duke of Raoche and his niece Lady Gretchen arrive a day early. Also newly arrived is Christina, an orphan girl on her way to Vienna in hopes of finding her aunt and uncle. When the Oberndorf treasure is found missing, all clues point to Christina, who steadfastly denies the charge. Father Joseph believes the girl, but it's up to Chauncey and Buster to prove her innocence and apprehend the real thieves. In the end, the Christmas celebration with the Queen is not as lavish as originally planned but proves much more meaningful. The town discovers that the true meaning of Christmas is not fame or fortune but friendship, sharing, and giving, and they celebrate their new wisdom by singing "Silent Night," a Christmas song composed by Father Joseph and Franz on that tumultuous Christmas Eve. This musical is full of compelling songs written by such great musical composers as Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens, Barry Harman, and Keith Herrmann. Voice talents Phil Hartman, Marie Osmond, and Tom Arnold add much to an already great production. [+]
