Review Rock-A-Doodle (Spanish) (Sub) / Samuel Goldwyn Company, The:Don Bluth's lavish animated musical Rock-A-Doodle was not a success when it was released in 1992. It's not hard to understand why: the film varies wildly in tone and the story makes little sense. In the live-action prologue, a little boy named Edmond learns that the crowing of Chanticleer the rooster did not make the sun rise, as everyone thought. But when a flood threatens his family's farm, Edmond sets off to get Chanticleer to make the sun rise and save the day. (Edmond gets turned into a kitten during this adventure, for no apparent reason other than that cats are easier to animate than humans. ) Chanticleer has moved to the city, and although the farm seems to be in the Midwest, the nearest city is clearly supposed to be Las Vegas. Chanticleer is now the King, an Elvis caricature used for an unfunny spoof of showbiz clichés. The animation is quite fluid, and there are lots of brightly colored effects-rainbows, sparkles, sunbeams. But parents will have a hard time explaining the story to their children. -Charles Solomon.

Review Dragon Tales - Let's Start a Band (With Collectible Sticker Set) / Sony Pictures:"Let's Start a Band" is not a regular episode of Dragon Tales. Instead, it is a conglomeration of Dragon Tales music videos thematically woven together by a story featuring real-life children. When Sam and Jennifer move to a new home, their babysitter introduces them to the neighborhood kids. Thanks to a common love of Dragon Tales and the universal appeal of music, the group is soon hard at work creating their own improvisational band and becoming great friends in the process. Imagine the kids' surprise when the whole Dragon Tales gang joins them in a musical finale. Real-life musicians Dan Zanes and Erykah Badu make brief appearances and 15 Dragon Tales music videos (including "Doodli-Do" and "Clap") are featured in their animated entirety. Review Winky Dink and You Magic Kit / Vanguard Cinema:Winky Dink cartoons, popular in the 1950s, are now interactive. This set features a "magic screen": a piece of heavy clear vinyl that clings to 27-inch television screens-it can be cut to fit smaller screens, but those with larger sets won't get full screen coverage. Also included are special crayons, soft cleaning cloth, and the first volume of Winky Dink and You all enclosed in a plastic carrying case. Viewers simply trace an onscreen object and watch as it becomes a vital tool in defeating the dastardly Harem Scarem. Don't tell the kids, but viewer drawings don't actually determine the course of the action-they simply fill in blank portions of the animation. While artwork wipes easily away from conventional television screens, the advisability of encouraging children to write on televisions and other household furnishing is debatable. This compilation contains nine episodes featuring Winky Dink, his dog Woofer, and the villainous Harem Scarem. Whether Harem Scarem is corrupting the King, disturbing the music of the spheres, or stealing precious gems, the collaborative efforts of Winky Dink, Woofer, and young viewers ensures that good will prevail.
