Review Bebe, Un Coninito Va Muy Lejos (Babe -- Spanish edition) / Universal Studios:The surprise hit of 1995, this splendidly entertaining family film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture, director, and screenplay, and deservedly won the Oscar for its subtly ingenious visual effects. Babe is all about the title character, a heroic little pig who's been taken in by the friendly farmer Hoggett (Oscar nominee James Cromwell), who senses that he and the pig share "a common destiny. " Babe, a popular mischief-maker the Australian farm, is adopted by the resident border collie and raised as a puppy, befriended by Ferdinand the duck (who thinks he's a rooster), and saves the day as a champion "sheep-pig. " Filled with a supporting cast of talking barnyard animals and a chorus of singing mice (courtesy of computer enhancements and clever animatronics), this frequently hilarious, visually imaginative movie has already taken its place as a family classic with timeless appeal. -Jeff Shannon.

Review The Incredible Hulk - Origin of the Hulk & The Power of Doctor Banner / Walt Disney Video:Discover the origin of the Incredible Hulk(TM) in this high-impact animated adventure. In a desperate race against time, Hulk's alter-ego, Bruce Banner, is trying to reverse his curse and return back to his normal self, but his arch-enemies have him on the run. Witness the fantastic transformation of the most powerful being that ever existed as the Incredible Hulk(TM) wages an all-out battle against his attackers and smashes his way to fight another day. There was some amazing, classic animation done for superhero cartoons done as far back as Max & Dave Fleisher's Superman series of the early 1940s (echoes of which can be found in Batman: The Animated Series). Those were done for the big screen; by the mid-1960s, superhero cartoons were being brought to television, and some of Marvel Comics' biggest heroes-Captain America, Spider-Man, Thor, and the Incredible Hulk-were the stars. Unfortunately, television didn't have much in terms of cachet-or production values-at the time, and all four heroes suffer for it. The Hulk gets short shrift here; the interesting thing about the character has always been twofold: the misunderstood misfit trying to make a quiet life for himself, and the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde duality of the Hulk and his alter ego, Dr. Bruce Banner. [+]
On the two episodes here-"The Power of Dr. Banner" and "The Origin of the Hulk"-the animation is minimal and barely serves to capture a single facet of either character's personality. It looks as if only a couple dozen pictures of the main characters were drawn; for the most part, this is a series of stationary illustrations with voiceovers and plenty of narration. -Randy Silver.

Review Light in the Forest / Walt Disney Video:The year is 1764, when a peace treaty between the Delaware Indians and the British requires that all white captives be returned to their people. Johnny Butler (James MacArthur), kidnapped by the tribe when he was a child and renamed True Son, is forced against his will to return to his white family in Pennsylvania. His escort, frontiersman Del Hardy (Fess Parker) and Shenandoe, a beautiful servant girl (Carol Lynley, in her feature film debut), try to help the boy adjust to his new way of life. But the white man's injustice and cruelty drive him back to the Delawares, where even greater dangers await him! This surprisingly absorbing drama, based on Conrad Richter's novel, tells the tale of the re-assimilation of Johnny Butler, kidnapped as a child by Native Americans (in this 1958 film, of course, called Indians), into the "white man's world. " Reluctant and unfamiliar with his biological parents (Jessica Tandy and Frank Ferguson), he's befriended by frontiersman Del Hardy (Fess Parker, basically looking handsome and playing his popular image), also raised by the Indians and now an Army man. Johnny also meets and fancies Shenandoe-his aunt and nasty uncle's indentured servant girl, (a positively luminescent Carol Lynley, 16, in her first role), whose family was massacred by another tribe. While this is an action film set in 1764, made in the still politically insensitive 1950s, it manages not to paint stereotypes. But Light in the Forest is, more than anything, a love story. Shenandoe, terrified of Johnny initially, grows to love him. Johnny, burdened by not feeling he belongs in either world, finds solace in Shenandoe's sweet friendship. [+]

Review Big Red / Firedog Pictures:Disney has always done right by the classic "boy and his dog" adventure, and Big Red, adapted from the popular novel by Jim Kjelgarrd, is no exception. Wealthy sportsman Walter Pidgeon buys a beautiful Irish setter to turn into a champion show dog and hires spunky young Gilles Payant, a French-speaking country boy teaching himself English, to care for the dog. But boys will be boys and as Gilles and the setter run through forests, chasing critters and rolling down hills, Red loses all interest in show business discipline as he bonds with the kid. Pidgeon makes a gentle and understanding paternal father figure who grows to love the uneducated but hard-working lad, who grows from impulsive adolescent to courageous young man, but apart from a shattering accident that leaves Red near death, there's little real excitement to the lolling tale. Disney house director Norman Tokar proves more adept in filming the stately wilderness landscape than developing the dramatic possibilities of the script, but there's a charm to the innocent scenes of the boy and his dog at play in the great outdoors. It's a nostalgic world of blue skies, green meadows, rushing rivers of blue and white water, and mountain peaks shooting into the sky. What more could a boy and his dog ask for? -Sean Axmaker.

Review The Unknown Marx Brothers:A roguishly clever and energetic documentary about the exploits of the Marx boys, this is as humorous and irreverent as the comedians' distinctive brand of humor. Directors David Leaf and John Scheinfeld accomplished the nearly impossible: they produced a fast and funny documentary as enjoyable as any piece of fiction. Though it runs for over two hours, this is so full of factual detail and amusing rumor about the exploits of the Marx boys that it could easily have gone on another 30 minutes. Its one flaw is the disappearance of the minor Marx brothers about halfway through, and the lack of information regarding the last days of all involved. -Rochelle O'Gorman.
