Review Pollyanna / BBC Warner:This 1973 BBC version of writer Eleanor Porter's glad girl has the preternaturally cheerful orphan coming to live with her rigid maiden aunt (Elaine Stritch) in the English countryside. Not only does she break down her aunt's resistance, but she winds up bringing light to all lives concerned: the hermit next door, a bedridden invalid, an out-of-wedlock family, and a homeless orphan boy. Cynics may want to steer clear of this old-fashioned story with an old-fashioned sensibility. But children and optimists will catch Pollyanna's glad spirit, which doesn't flag until more than two hours in, when she learns she is paralyzed. But not to worry-in a mere 20 minutes she walks again, Aunt Polly is reunited with her former love (Pollyanna's doctor), and the orphan boy finds a home with the loner. This version is long-clocking in at more than 150 minutes-but rewarding. It's appropriate viewing for children 5 years of age and older with long attention spans. -Kimberly Heinrichs.

Review How To Draw Monsters:Six high speed demos show you from start to finish how to draw monsters. Hundreds of graphics to illustrate the secrets of drawing like a master. Creativity exercises to teach you how to draw new and amazing monsters. For 15 years Marshall Vandruff has been teaching art classes to students and professionals in Southern California. He has trained gallery artists, illustrators, comic book artists, computer game designers and animators. These videos are the best of his teaching. They will show you the professional approach to making pictures and teach you the classic drawing methods of the masters. Come up with a monster that's new & surprising. NOT A CLICHE. Not. [+]
OTHER PEOPLE'S MONSTERS. Not Re-Hashes. One comic book mutant is a hit, for the next few years we'll see all of its family members. Good ideas repeated over and over become cliches. Even professionals make this mistake. especially professionals - because they're under pressure to do something that's already proven to sell. But we want to see things we haven't seen before. Cliches are a start, but we should get beyond cliches and do new stuff.

Review Lady and the Tramp:Disney's first animated feature in CinemaScope is now available in widescreen presentations on video, and it is definitely good to get the whole picture. One of the studio's most original and charming movies, the 1955 film tells the story of a rakish, street-smart dog named Tramp, who helps an aristocratic pooch named Lady out of some trouble and then commences a romance with her. Sweet, funny scenes abound, and the combination of innocence and sophistication would have done well in a live-action picture. Peggy Lee cowrote the songs and provides the voice of the Siamese cats in one of the film's best-known musical sequences. This newly restored version spruces up both sonics and visuals, and a letterbox version is available. -Tom Keogh.

Review The New Adventures of Kimba The White Lion - Successor of Legend / Geneon [Pioneer]:Kimba the White Lion began as a manga (comics) series Osamu Tezuka wrote and drew from 1950 through 1954. The title character was the son of the Panja, the Jungle Emperor, although his large ears and round head made him look more like a mouse than a feline. The stories remained popular enough for Tezuka to produce an animated series in 1965, the first color animated program on Japanese television. A substantially reedited version began showing in America in 1966. Tezuka followed Kimba with a second series that depicted the character as an adult with a mate and cubs of his own. It finally aired in America in 1984 on the Christian Broadcasting Network as Leo the Lion. It is an article of faith among Tezuka's fans that Disney's 1994 hit The Lion King was based in part on Kimba, although the artists who made the record-breaking feature deny any influence. Neither side has commented on how much Tezuka borrowed from Disney's Bambi for Kimba. -Charles Solomon.
